  • The Weeping Birch is a real winner! In summer these beauties act as mini air conditioners. I’ve spent many summers resting in the cool shade under this one or the many others that feature in ‘Howells Garden’ John’s Korumburra garden paradise.

  • Looking up at the sky through silver birch trees. http://www.acorncepts.com / http://www.virtualorkney.com

  • I took this photo of a birch tree with a knot in it that looks like an eye. When I cropped then mirrored the image, and put them together, this is what resulted. There are two separate faces- one in each tree, facing one another, but when you view the picture as a whole, there’s another face- looking forward, composed of both eyes and a heart in the center that doubles as a mouth and a nose. At least that’s how I see it. Hence the title: Natural Love.

  • This is a shot taken at Stan Heywet and it is a beautiful path of birch trees / Stan Heywet was a mansion owned by a extremely rich family back in the 1800’s. / It was converted into a museum which has acres of gardens for sight seeing. / You can do tours of the mansion and the garden. It has literally acres of gardens and walkways. • November can generally be a dull month but in this grove of “Spirit Birch” near the shore of Lake Superior at Duluth, Minnesota, the forest was alive with songs and whispers on a snowless Thanksgiving Day. Printed, double matted and framed, this is a very compelling image.

  • The time of which I spoke to you has now arrived, and you may deem it necessary to first borrow the sacred mAccA’gis. Who are you that comes here as a supplicant? Sit down opposite to me, where I can see you and speak to you, and fix your attentions upon me,while you receive life you must permit your thoughts to dwell upon your present condition, inorder to support yourself against falling into despondency. • I stood in the snow behind the tripod, so quietly that one bird landed on my lens! What joy. I couldn’t actually say we bonded, but I was thrilled. I’ve had birds land on my hat, but never one that I could see so closely. Featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams – Thank you! Shot in RAW. Slight curves adjustment, at the suggestion of Eivor. The snowfall made it necessary to bump up the ISO to 320. I tried ISO 640 at one point, but those looked a tad grainy. This is a male Common Redpoll in today’s snowfall. Note snowflake on his back. Our area has so far eluded Mt. Redoubt’s harsh volcanic particles, although Alaska Airlines and FedEx had to suspend all flights in and out yesterday. • She grieves no more for what is gone / as falling leaves leap to feed old ground. She is merely one minute scrap on autumn forest path, Where she walks the walk we all must take- / And bends, and mends, anew each day, / so not to break. / No more will the dead’s requiem bleat out regret- / She will pray sing-songs of great joy, instead. Just as sapling to falling leaf she is / A portion of all that is and has been. / The din of grief cannot abide / When pushed aside for life’s great joy. / And if the dead think to justify their greed, / She will smile and bend to a bashed knee, / But will not be broken. * / Finding lessons from nature, a refresher course of sorts, as I begin yet another season in my life after what felt to be a long Winter of loss. / /

  • Well as you can see from the images below, The Empty Studio has been all about inks…my inks had been put away for so long some of them had dried out, and had to be discarded, but I still have an assortment of acrylic inks, and have been using mostly sepia and black for this collection… Today I added a bit of colour to this latest painting of Hollyhocks…they seemed to need it…I’ve had the sketch forever in my files, and I don’t know where it originated, but at one time I did grow these regal flowers in my garden and maybe the idea came from that time of my life Acrylic Inks on Cotton Paper… Silently a flower blooms, / In silence it falls away; / Yet here now, at this moment, at this place, / The world of the flower, the whole of / the world is blooming. / This is the talk of the flower, the truth / of the blossom: / The glory of eternal life is fully shining here. / - Zenkei Shibayama..

  • “Poppy” is the newest addition to the Empty Studio collection…the studio is getting a lot emptier as the day for installation draws nearer, so I decided to go back to long ago childhood crafts, and create this flower in a very old but unique way, painting it with lemon juice…I added a bit of detail with a bamboo pen…I am thrilled with the results, and plan to do a lot more of these..... see others in the series below Lemon Juice on Cartridge Paper At dawn I unite with the breeze / To announce the coming of light; / At eventide I join the birds / In bidding the light farewell. / The plains are decorated with / My beautiful colors, and the air / Is scented with my fragrance. / As I embrace Slumber the eyes of / Night watch over me, and as I / Awaken I stare at the sun, which is / The only eye of the day..from The Song of the Flower by Gibran.

  • The walls are newly painted and the studio awaits the installation of the “newly minted” units which will take place tommorow…I can’t wait…I have a few paintings still hidden in the “Empty Studio” series and this one of flowers was created in the ink wash-off technique, that you saw in a few of the others…it is difficult to end up with detailed work in this style of painting, as the results are unpredictable, but that is the beauty of it…many times it ends up looking like a wood cut... see others in the series below Ink on Arches Paper Different flowers look good to different people / Pick the flower when it is ready to be picked. / The flower that you spent time to care for does not grow while the willow / that your accidentally planted flourishes and gives shade.
