This is a collection of paintings by Alan Hogan in which he attempts to uplift the visual senses of the viewer by using bright and vibrant colours with regular everyday images. Thus enhancing the viewers appreciation for the simple things in life, whether it be a tree, a sunset or just a ordinary house cat. Dear Visitor, This calendar attempts to convey poetical scenery of my homeland painted with oil on birch bark. These works try to embody the unparalleled mysticism and beauty of wildlife and man-made landmarks of my lovely, largely undiscovered country hidden in the center of Europe, with its ancient woodland, meandering sandy rivers and wetlands, which are paradise for all sorts of birds, storks being the most prominent and venerated, almost sacred bird specie there. It is a good sign of luck to come across a stork (‘busel’ in local language). The name of this country is Polessiye, which can be literally translated as ‘fields and woods’. And this is exactly right! Incidentally, oil painting on birch bark is unique technique which is practiced very locally in very few parts of Byelorussia and Russia. It requires special skills and very specific training plus a rare ‘sense’ of the medium (i.e. natural ever-changing texture of the birch bark) and great patience. Moreover, this technique is indispensable without rich creative imagination because all scenes painted on birch bark are drawn from artist’s mind and they never repeat themselves. I will be happy if you happen to enjoy this calendar and share the hidden wildlife and spiritual treasures of my ancient homeland. You are more than welcome to visit galleries of my pics with scenic views of the place where I live and work, the place I do love. Mozir Ravines Sanctuary. The Unknown Polessye Best wishes, Alla Melnichenko The Author
