  • I love Birch trees… / /

  • I was off to take some photographs of some waterfalls in the Breacon Beacons in Wales when I almost missed this scene. Had there not been a break in the cloud I may have missed it. It was probably the best drive by shooting photograph I have to date. Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 27mm, f/8, 1/60 sec, ISO 400. No filters used and mounted on the car door. A small amount of dust and scratches removed in photoshop. • Paperbark Birch in Autumn Gold / North Pole Alaska North Star “Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips; maybe it was the voice of the rain crying, a cracked bell, or a torn heart. Something from far off it seemed / deep and secret to me, / hidden by the earth, / a shout muffled by huge autumns, / by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves. Wakening from the dreaming forest there, / the hazel-sprig sang under my tongue, / its drifting fragrance climbed up through my conscious mind as if suddenly the roots I had left behind cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood… and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.” ~ Poetry by Pablo Neruda Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / My images do not belong to the public domain. • from Robert Frost’s Birches ”...So was I once myself a swinger of birches. / And so I dream of going back to be. / It’s when I’m weary of considerations, / And life is too much like a pathless wood / Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs / Broken across it, and one eye is weeping / From a twig’s having lashed across it open. / I’d like to get away from earth awhile / And then come back to it and begin over. / May no fate willfully misunderstand me / And half grant what I wish and snatch me away / Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love: / I don’t know where it’s likely to go better. / I’d like to go by climbing a birch tree / And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk / Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more, / But dipped its top and set me down again. / That would be good both going and coming back. / One could do worse than be a swinger of birches. “ Ringwood, NJ / October Nikon D80 / Manual / 18-135 mm / Raw
