This is my artwork entry for the ‘Freedom To Create Prize’. It is very complex in the multi-issue nature of the messages it is meant to portray. What may appear as separate issues are really a part of a larger single issue showing how the individual issues are inseparable from one another.The artwork addresses the following individual issues as a whole… / / 1.) Feeding the population of the Earth, and not just the hungry or starving. / / 2.) The great public misconception that biomass fuels, such as ethanol, are really a ‘green’ alternative technology, when in fact, they are not a viable and sustainable alternative energy source, as they create exponentially many more energy, environmental, and human rights issues than they resolve. / / 3.) The ongoing loss and abuse of the very few fertile soils that exist on Earth due to the accepted agricultural practices we continue to use in how we grow food. Please take the time to read the article that I have written that accompanies this artwork at the link shown below. It will give you a basic primer as to why these issues are inseparable. Details about the creation of the artwork. / The backdrop was rendered in Terragen. The terrain file in Terragen was sculpted by myself by digitally hand-painting a greyscale heightfield map in Photoshop, and then importing the bitmap file version into Terragen. The multitude of other environmental files used in Terragen were also created myself. The gas pump was created from a photo I took myself. The starving child was created from a PD image from the web. The pump and child shadows were drawn in Photoshop. All of these separate components were than composited, painted, and re-touched in Photoshop. Biofuels offer the possibility of producing energy without a net increase of carbon into the atmosphere because the plants used in to produce the fuel have removed CO2 from the atmosphere, unlike fossil fuels which return carbon which was stored beneath the surface for millions of years into the air. Biofuel is therefore more nearly carbon neutral and less likely to increase atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (though doubts have been raised as to whether this benefit can be achieved in practice). The use of biofuels also reduces dependence on petroleum and enhances energy security.

The gold that’s found at rainbow’s end / Is not the gold that one does spend / It is the gold that farmers tend / That all the hungry do depend / / This gold is often known as maize / Grown long ago to present days / It quickly grows from golden rays / To stand tall in the rows arrays / / It’s golden nuggets found on ears / Have feed the poor for years and years / Once it feed our pioneers / As they explored the new frontiers / / To turn this precious gold to fuel / For all world’s poor this would be cruel / Fight hunger, lesson learned in school / Use maize for food, the golden rule / / This painting was inspired by one of the oldest and most important staples that nature has offered us on our planet, and that is maize, or corn if you will. Corn and maize provide for the nutritional needs of most of the world’s starving, and has been the main staple in many cultures for many millenniums. It is truly gold, and the earth gives us this grain at great sacrifice to herself, as corn is incredibly hard on the few fertile soils found on our planet. / / Recently, this gold has seen a trend to be turned into liquid gold, in the form of biofuels (ethanol). The US is currently using more than a quarter of it’s entire corn crop each year to make these biofuels, which is having a very dramatic impact on the price and availability of all corn products. It is even inciting riots in countries, such as Mexico, where people can no longer afford to buy corn and corn products to eat because of the biofuel production demand. Third world countries are also experiencing increased famine due to using maize and corn, the principal grain used for food relief programs, for biofuels. / / Corn and maize should be used for food. If you are considering getting one of the new ‘flex-fuel’ vehicles as your next vehicle… then please also consider the impact on humanity and the environment you become a part of in doing so. / /
