Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Beware The Bilby Captured this sign whilst travelling along the South Coast Highway, Western Australia. This is the first time I had ever seen a sign with a picture of a Bilby on it. For those interested, I have included some information about this beautiful little creature: Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) This endangered, delicate marsupial has long, silky fur, a narrow head with large ears, a pointed snout and a long tongue. The forelimbs have 4 clawed digits. The hindfeet have a large, strongly-clawed fourth toe and a double claw on the fused second and third toes. They sleep in a burrow in a termite mound, beneath a grass tussock or shrub, sometimes shared by a family group. They emerge after midnight, running with the tail held up like a flag, often standing upright sniffing for insects and fungi, which are dug out with the forefeet. Their diet consists mainly of termites, ants, larvae, seeds, bulbs, fruit and fungi. They inhabit the arid and semi-arid shrublands, spinifex and tussock grasslands of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland.

The cover of the very first children’s picture book I illustrated…published in 1997 by Axiom Books, Australia. (Originally it was to be titled, The Bilby and the Trilby, much better I thought, but I was just the illustrator not the editor or art director, so what did I know.) I did a companion book to this one at the same time, KANGAROO MUMS DON’T LIKE CRUMBS, which was published the following year…36 full page, full colour illustrations – 18 per book – plus covers, end papers, full title and half title decorations and all done in a little over 2 years…couldn’t keep up the pace these days…I did lots of research and at least 150 preliminary drawings and countless studies for the books…lots I’d change and much I’m not happy with now, but it was a great learning experience. Before these books I was primarily a black and white – pen and ink – artist with most of my commissions coming from small poetry and young adult publishers, this was a real challenge but one I enjoyed and one that taught me a lot about water colours.

HAPPY EASTER ;D

Hello everyone! I just popped into the Bubbles to wish you all a happy Easter. I wish you all to have lots of fun, happiness, laughter, chocolate, boiled eggs (with soldiers/toast), hot cross buns, and anything else that the Easter Bilby and Bunny (they work together these days) bring you to remind you of this important occasion. My son is home this weekend (yay!! exciting cos he’s only home every 2nd Easter) and he’s in for a treat! We had chocolate hot cross buns for breakfast today (nice, but I prefer the real ones) and on Sunday we’ll be colouring eggs! We use textas and paint to decorate our eggs. I’ll have to remember to take photos before everyone digs in to eat them! Of course we’ll have an egg hunt as well… we always do, even if my son’s not home! It’s more fun when he is though. At least the weather’s cooled down from 40C! We always manage to leave a couple in the garden for the ants and I’m sure they prefer to eat unmelted chocolate! No foil is left behind either… I’ve found these cool eggs that look like real eggs!! Anyway… I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Happy Easter ;D

Aussie Antics - Bind up cover (two books into one) (Water-colour on cold-press illust Board)
by Rory StapletonUS$3.56–US$29.69
A cover image I did 10 months ago for a new combined edition of two books I illustrated some years ago. The Bilby is from, BILL BILBY AND FRIENDS, (I didn’t choose the title, blame the publisher. It was going to be titled, ‘The Bilby and the Trilby’ – much better I thought, but I’m just the illustrator, what do I know.) The Kangaroo is from, KANGAROO MUMS DON’T LIKE CRUMBS; both written by Australian author, Roger Tulloch. Both books have been sold out and reprinted so often since 1990, that the publisher has combined the two to cut down on printing and binding costs (1 cover instead of two etc and only one book to stack in the warehouse instead of 2…now I’ll get a 50% reduction in royalties…ah the joys of being an illustrator
