Last weekend Bill and I embarked on a mission, our mission was to photograph as much Extreme Sport as we could handle for Neutraliser magazine! What ensued was a weekend packed with sun, boats, gorgeous bodies, broken bones and thousands of people… Australia Day – 26th January 2008 / National Wakeboarding Championships – Nepean Bill found the day a challenge but like any good photographer did what he had to do for his art… / Look…no hands! / These guys did some crazy things on the water… / And the girls were just as good… / Sunday 27th January 2008 / BMX Freestyle Championships – Monster Park, Homebush We found shooting the indoor portion of the weekend more of a challenge (with the temp indoors getting up over 40 degrees C), but were pleased with the results… Mike Spinner – Pro USA Rider / Bill’s Fisheye lens was put to good use! / Monday, 28th January 2008 / BMX Freestyle Dirt Championships – Homebush These guys can do some amazing tricks! Superman / Tail Whip / Front Flip / The Oh My God I’m not going to make it / There was standing room only in the First Aid tent by the end of the day. There were busted knees, broken collar bones, broken fingers, bruised kidneys…one kid was riding with a broken ankle! / They can fly!! / Even a visit from ET! / All in all an action packed, very successful weekend!

.....sang Billy Connolly on the theme tune to Supergran in 1985, well my Gran doesn’t have a flying bike, but she totally ripped it up at the esteemed Goodwood racecourse in a Lamborghini, a Ferrari and a Porker (not pictured, because they suck). She clocked up 135mph on the straights, that’s 217kmh in new money. She’s 90, in fact, she’s well into her 90s. And she makes awesome raspberry jam. She has the lifeforce, and I have her haircut, so be my reckoning I’ll be powering a Bugatti Veyron round the M25 in another 62 years. / (My Gran is not called Beryl, in case the colloquialism escapes you)

A huge THANK YOU to whoever purchased 3 copies of The Bike in card format this evening! On lots of levels it is a real buzz – firstly that someone actually likes my work enough to pay good money for it, and secondly this was a ‘file 13’ image that I worked on salvaging because I really liked the subject … so it has justified my effort! Happy digi dance happening again over here!!! :+) Hugs / Rosalie

Ok… so this is the story… On friday night I had my wheels stolen off my bike at uni. True, this is an unusual topic to bring up at RB. I just wanted to share my outrage with the RB community (and me feeling comfortable to share reflects positively on the RB comnunity I feel). Nevertheless, the point is… someone stole my wheels, my very useful, fun and ecologically sustainable wheels! Oh… and without my wheels, it’s much more difficult getting to places that I’d like to photograph. I’m outraged!

I don’t get angry very often, but I’m feeling a bit that way tonight. My son who is doing the ‘hard yards’, living and studying at Uni on the Gold Coast, and working part-time at a local food outlet, had his “Mountain Bike” stolen in broad daylight while he was at work today. He worked very hard to save to buy his bike so he could ride to his lectures and his part-time job. He only had it about a month. It was chained to a tall post at the shopping centre where he works. The thieves would’ve had to lift it rather high to get over the top of the pole….and no-one saw anything. My heart goes out to my son, and being on a rather tight budget ourselves, cannot help him out. I worry sometimes as he has to walk home from his job at times late at night, and riding a bike, at least I felt his journey was a little more safe. Honestly, I just don’t understand sometimes why people do these things. He reported it to the police, they were sympathetic but really couldn’t do anything but suggest he goes down to the police station tomorrow and report it.

A few days after Christmas 1993 I was working about the yard & house, I got a bit over hot and thought I’d take the Harley out for a spin, visit a few people, cool off…Unfortunately, some dogs got in the way mid way through a bend, and I parted company from my much loved Harley. It was immediately obvious that my left leg was badly broken. Therefore, after a painful ride to hospital etc. Etc. Etc. I was told that I had crushed both feet, and what is considered the worst break in the leg (the tibial plateau was broken off, the breaks going right through the knee joint in two places). What the hospital didn’t do was pay attention to my constant complaints of back pain? Two & a half years later I got spinal X-rays done, which revealed that T5 &T6 were both crushed – considered the classic breaks that make paraplegics’ out of motorcyclists. The residual leg pain was chronic, they sent me to a pain clinic, test upon tests… Only to be told “there’s nothing we can do”. So living with chronic pain became the norm. I eventually found an orthopaedic surgeon who was prepared to help. I had a series of operations to correct my toes on my left foot, which had clawed. Then a big operation on my left knee, which had healed at a bad angle and was causing me to fall over. As a result, I had my leg straightened. Post op I got a bad dose of DVT’s which ended up in my lungs, this was due to an injection being forgotten. Obviously, I survived, but it took about two years before I felt normal in the chest again. / I still suffer with knee pain and occasionally it gives way on me & my surgeon says I’ll still require a knee replacement at some stage. Chronic pain is such a bugger.

/ This is image closely parallels my bike accident yesterday (21st of march). My Orbea and I negotiated a Swanson Street tram track, I got thrown off at 36KM an hour (says my speedo) onto my shoulder, thigh, ankle and wrist. My wrist will have healed in 5-6 weeks the doc tells me, so until then, I guess I’ll really have to study over the holidays! It’s the second time I’ve decided to break my wrist, I trained myself to use one hand, I can still use my camera! / not my photo

I’m gonna go off on a little rant here: So this morning I ride my bike to work (just like almost every day) , it’s about 30 degrees out, but a beautiful and clear fall morning. I pass the usually number of Pick Up trucks and other vehicles proudly displaying their Harley Davidson decals in their rear window. I’m sorry, but why do they need to let everyone know that they have or like Harley’s, but yet they don’t ride them? Are the bikes that bad, that folks own them, but rather drive their cars / trucks? Why do they feel like they need to let folks know that they own one? So Bike Week is coming up in a few months in Daytona, and as usual, when travelling on Interstate 95, there will be a slew of Trucks trailering their Harley’s down there. I own a BMW motorcycle, have no “BMW Motorcycle” decals on my vehicles, and just ride my bike when I want to go somewhere. Can someone explain? Am I missing something?

on sunday i did this race, it’s 25km’s and you can Mountain bike it or run it. i ran it. it’s x-country and rather pretty but you’re watching where you put your feet so much you can’t really take in much of the scenery. there was a corner called “suicide corner” and the photographers camp there to get action photos. I saw one runner go over the edge. How? I don’t know….We’ll take bikes up when it warms up and go over the course. / finally finished no 6 Cuban car. last one took a lot longer….seems never ending, starts off fun though.have just plastered some boards to do more cycle graphics. / once that’s done i go get fabrics and start playing and drawing up my summer 08 sleepwear.i also have to make up some groovy beanies…that’s oxymoronic almost in’t it? well, i shall attempt it. / i have to get some more paintings done for gallery but will do them in a few weeks. / next thing i aim to do is a race up in the bue mountains called the Mt Wilson to Bilpin. / it’s a 35km x-country race with spectaular hills. i will train for this one. / today…have donated blood, visited dentist and wasted time. da-da.

This is my first proper go at street candids. Lucky I chose something where people expect to be photographed. And if they didn’t want to be, they just walked off. And yes, that last photo really is of a guy with a camera elastic-banded to his helmet. Not sure exactly how he intended on taking photos.

feel like i’m coming down with something. Maybe it’s sniffing resin all week. it’s been too cold for it to go off and STINKS. i’ve done 6 chairs, 3 tables, painted up 2 helmets, covered one in a pair of old jeans, made 3 really cool belts outta old tyres (if i put them on red bubble they’ll be copied for sure) and painting over 8 old mannequins. / I’m going to do a BIG shop window display at Bar Bici Bondi Junction next week and i’m just making all the props i want to use in the display. I’ve also made cusions outta tees and sewats but they’ll go in the new Apres Velo Temple (office) when my partner moves later in the year. / Better go keep painting helmets too cool for school.

had a great weekend, yesterday, Sunday, did a 15km x-country fun run from Lindfield to Seaforth, then had to take eldest daughter who has grown 10cm extra on leg and arm length to get some clothes to fit her, then took an obsessive road cycist friend Mountain Biking around Manly Dam….hoping to convert him to the joys of bush/dirt biking. He loved it, yeah! / Gave my beautiful Aunty Vicki a painting lesson and she gave me a crochet lesson, she did much better than I….....i ended up with a tangled mess of wool but will perservere. Want to be able tocrochet bits and pieces for painting and also clothing lines. My girl both competed in an Eisteddford on Saturday and that takes up a lot of time…they’re both really cool tappers and they came 2nd which they were pretty chuffed about. Their first time to compete. Next weekend doing a soft sand race on Manly Beach but took the soft option of 9km’s rather than 21km’s. I get bored running laps of anything, need constant stimulation that’s why i prefer bush running. Road running /biking just don’t do it for me. / Painting: doing a big canvas, 1/2 way thru, this is avoidance behaviour for me….....must get to work. This is for my yearly calendar, i also have another image to do for a new cycling calendar. You need 13 images each year…which isn’t much if you’ve been painting, but i’ve been sewing/sampling a lot the past year.
