on sunday i did this race, it’s 25km’s and you can Mountain bike it or run it. i ran it. it’s x-country and rather pretty but you’re watching where you put your feet so much you can’t really take in much of the scenery. there was a corner called “suicide corner” and the photographers camp there to get action photos. I saw one runner go over the edge. How? I don’t know….We’ll take bikes up when it warms up and go over the course. / finally finished no 6 Cuban car. last one took a lot longer….seems never ending, starts off fun though.have just plastered some boards to do more cycle graphics. / once that’s done i go get fabrics and start playing and drawing up my summer 08 sleepwear.i also have to make up some groovy beanies…that’s oxymoronic almost in’t it? well, i shall attempt it. / i have to get some more paintings done for gallery but will do them in a few weeks. / next thing i aim to do is a race up in the bue mountains called the Mt Wilson to Bilpin. / it’s a 35km x-country race with spectaular hills. i will train for this one. / today…have donated blood, visited dentist and wasted time. da-da.

Ok… so this is the story… On friday night I had my wheels stolen off my bike at uni. True, this is an unusual topic to bring up at RB. I just wanted to share my outrage with the RB community (and me feeling comfortable to share reflects positively on the RB comnunity I feel). Nevertheless, the point is… someone stole my wheels, my very useful, fun and ecologically sustainable wheels! Oh… and without my wheels, it’s much more difficult getting to places that I’d like to photograph. I’m outraged!

I’m gonna go off on a little rant here: So this morning I ride my bike to work (just like almost every day) , it’s about 30 degrees out, but a beautiful and clear fall morning. I pass the usually number of Pick Up trucks and other vehicles proudly displaying their Harley Davidson decals in their rear window. I’m sorry, but why do they need to let everyone know that they have or like Harley’s, but yet they don’t ride them? Are the bikes that bad, that folks own them, but rather drive their cars / trucks? Why do they feel like they need to let folks know that they own one? So Bike Week is coming up in a few months in Daytona, and as usual, when travelling on Interstate 95, there will be a slew of Trucks trailering their Harley’s down there. I own a BMW motorcycle, have no “BMW Motorcycle” decals on my vehicles, and just ride my bike when I want to go somewhere. Can someone explain? Am I missing something?

Last weekend Bill and I embarked on a mission, our mission was to photograph as much Extreme Sport as we could handle for Neutraliser magazine! .....sang Billy Connolly on the theme tune to Supergran in 1985, well my Gran doesn’t have a flying bike, but she totally ripped it up at the esteemed Goodwood racecourse in a Lamborghini, a Ferrari and a Porker (not pictured, because they suck). She clocked up 135mph on the straights, that’s 217kmh in new money. She’s 90, in fact, she’s well into her 90s. And she makes awesome raspberry jam. She has the lifeforce, and I have her haircut, so by my reckoning I’ll be powering a Bugatti Veyron round the M25 in another 62 years. / (My Gran is not called Beryl, in case the colloquialism escapes you)

A huge THANK YOU to whoever purchased 3 copies of The Bike in card format this evening! On lots of levels it is a real buzz – firstly that someone actually likes my work enough to pay good money for it, and secondly this was a ‘file 13’ image that I worked on salvaging because I really liked the subject … so it has justified my effort! Happy digi dance happening again over here!!! :+) Hugs / Rosalie

A few days after Christmas 1993 I was working about the yard & house, I got a bit over hot and thought I’d take the Harley out for a spin, visit a few people, cool off…Unfortunately, some dogs got in the way mid way through a bend, and I parted company from my much loved Harley. It was immediately obvious that my left leg was badly broken. Therefore, after a painful ride to hospital etc. Etc. Etc. I was told that I had crushed both feet, and what is considered the worst break in the leg (the tibial plateau was broken off, the breaks going right through the knee joint in two places). What the hospital didn’t do was pay attention to my constant complaints of back pain? Two & a half years later I got spinal X-rays done, which revealed that T5 &T6 were both crushed – considered the classic breaks that make paraplegics’ out of motorcyclists. The residual leg pain was chronic, they sent me to a pain clinic, test upon tests… Only to be told “there’s nothing we can do”. So living with chronic pain became the norm. I eventually found an orthopaedic surgeon who was prepared to help. I had a series of operations to correct my toes on my left foot, which had clawed. Then a big operation on my left knee, which had healed at a bad angle and was causing me to fall over. As a result, I had my leg straightened. Post op I got a bad dose of DVT’s which ended up in my lungs, this was due to an injection being forgotten. Obviously, I survived, but it took about two years before I felt normal in the chest again. / I still suffer with knee pain and occasionally it gives way on me & my surgeon says I’ll still require a knee replacement at some stage. Chronic pain is such a bugger.

I don’t get angry very often, but I’m feeling a bit that way tonight. My son who is doing the ‘hard yards’, living and studying at Uni on the Gold Coast, and working part-time at a local food outlet, had his “Mountain Bike” stolen in broad daylight while he was at work today. He worked very hard to save to buy his bike so he could ride to his lectures and his part-time job. He only had it about a month. It was chained to a tall post at the shopping centre where he works. The thieves would’ve had to lift it rather high to get over the top of the pole….and no-one saw anything. My heart goes out to my son, and being on a rather tight budget ourselves, cannot help him out. I worry sometimes as he has to walk home from his job at times late at night, and riding a bike, at least I felt his journey was a little more safe. Honestly, I just don’t understand sometimes why people do these things. He reported it to the police, they were sympathetic but really couldn’t do anything but suggest he goes down to the police station tomorrow and report it.

I was delighted to get a chance to combine my passion for photography (esp. Infrared) with another – that of cycling up impossible inclines and across ferocious Australian bush. Out walking on a bicycle track in the You Yangs, an intrepid cyclist climbed what seemed to me to be an impossible rock incline (halfway along a seriously challenging track). It was a chance to take a photograph that I seized at once. The result was / Ghost Rider in the Sky That collaboration of passions has resulted in a sale which was a wonderful surprise – and I am so grateful to the buyer of this piece.

I have been lucky to go regularly to Tuscany for a number of years, and seeing and experiencing some well known places and some not so well known repeatedly has allowed theses brief encounters to build and form a visual collective. When they will bare fruit I don’t know yet but that is the beauty of having a sketchbook with you at all times just to gather and collect. I saw a TV documentary of Hockney and he was drawing constantly and one of these sessions used pens. So on this particular trip I decided to go out with a Fine-liner, Broad tip pen and a grey felt-tip pen. The strong light and deep shadows allowed the pens to work their particular character, and then over an expresso or two the watercolours came out and a few quick washes of yellow ochre or burnt siena, raw umber, quite appropriate really and I had my little bits of Italy to take back. / / It is one of the great things about flying into Pisa, you can jump on a train in minutes and be in the heart of the city. / / These are snapshots of going to Vinci on the bus, street signs and other memorabilia. / / This was on a plaque outside the Vinci museum.” You are about to enter Piazza dei Guidi, a work of art by M.Paladino. Please “respect” the shapes of the piazza and take “care” when stepping outside the marked paths. The work is enhanced by the presence of people but it’s satisfactory conservation depends on everyone’s consideration.” I thought this statement was fantastic it has all sorts of messages there for how we engage with the visual world. / / Firenze the Galleria dell ‘Accademia Michelangelo’s David but his unfinished sculptures are equally impressive, figures emerging out of the rock. Every street give a view of Santa Maria Del Fiore the duomo dominates the skyline the view from the top is spectacular. / / Bikes in every style imaginable, one day I will find a way of handling them, the black and white marble of Siena. / / Magnolia Trees I think with unusual seed bods.

The Reclaim North Wales Campaign / / Here are some pics of the protest rally held Sunday 13th Sept 2009. This was one of the meeting points, The Ponderosa Cafe, in the Horseshoe Pass, North Wales. At a very rough guestimate, there were as many as 1200+ bikes there when these pics were taken. / / The protest was against the systematic harrassment of all Bikers, who dare ride into North Wales, by the North Wales Police. Enough is enough! / / If you are on FLICKR you can see the set here / / If not, here are some highlights…. / / US / / / Arrivals / / / / / / / / / View to the left / / / view to the middle / / / View to the right / / / / © photogenique (dave peddie): using these images for any purpose and in any way, without prior permission, may lead to legal action. / / Licence plates, where visible, have been blanked out for the sake of privacy. I love this place. / / It can be pretty unpredictable: -random inquiries from people that want to represent you in some strange form or other in countries you have never heard of, and never again will… -normally sane and intelligent people commenting on dog poo and colonoscopies… -being on the exclusive advisory board for some of the many rb love triangles, very interesting! -informal discussions on the benefits of petrol fumes (among other things) on ones creativity and today / -an old friend appearing out the woodwork back in my bubble-box – telling me of some new shonky bubbler on the prowl. You know, I don’t really care about shonky bubblers and criticism on my work. Infact, as my good friends here know, I often invite it. Kafka, Kim, Ray, Josh, Katherine, Mike, Mimi, Anita, Walt among others will all vouch for me on that one when I recently uploaded ten paintings specifically for that purpose and then removed them from public view once I had the feedback, advice and criticism I was after. However... it does piss me off when a friend tells me that she has done her first painted portrait ever of her nephew and some asshole under the name of “artcritic” comes along and with their sympathies for the child being ‘retarded’. She also mentioned that the slimebag had been cruising around my stuff and leaving comments too. Normally it wouldn’t bug me, and in fact, he/she has critiqued work that I was happy with, and lest we forget, work that has been sold and that is proudly hanging in other peoples homes, by their choice! The first critique was on The Homecoming and the comment and reply are as follows: / / paint by numbers. Right? (My reply) Wrong! No, I actually wanted this effect… feel free to move right along if it’s not your cup of tea :D and the second was on: Out West / / and the comment and reply was as follows: / amazing what you can do with a paintbrush and no imagination Add your comment as a reply to artcritic / / Yea, it’s sort of like humour. Some have it and some only have bitter sarcasm to fall back on. I noticed you only recently joined RB and by the looks of it your taste in art is pretty predictable so I’m surprised you don’t like this. Now piss off on your bike. —-—-—-—- I could have simply deleted these comments, but for once I decided that I would leave them – I am confident in these works. I am also glad this person gave me the space to consider this fact and I wanted to bring to your attention their insipid but ‘valuable’ existence. Keep on painting on… / XOX Carmen.

So after a while away in Japan I am finally getting round to showing some of my photos from the land that brought us the benefit of all night noodle shops, private Karaoke and giant robots. So from Harajuku to Odaiba, from Ueno to Shibuya, from Tokyo to Hiroshima, here are some more of the wonderful world. In no particular order: / Vintage rockers at Harajuku park… / ...and pose. / ... and twist / Hiroshima Trams / Childish excitement / and jump. / Friends drinking before Karaoke(and they were still friends after too) / Typhoon Tokyo / Crashes in Odaiba / Singing in style / Ginza Lights. and that’s probably enough for now. Well I have no fuel in my car to run around taking sunset pics, so I thought I would get on my electric bike so off I went down to the banks and along the bike track right to the point where the sun was setting ,it was great out there all by myself fiddling around with my camera and tripod, taking pics this way and that waiting for the sun to drop and for just the right moment ,as it got dark the mozzies came out so I had to leave as I was heading back I got chased by a German Shepard so I hit the electric accelerator and off I went then I almost got wiped out by a kangaroo going across the road, but the fresh salt air sucking into my lungs and up my nostrils was very refreshing ,and as I rode past the houses I could see in the windows and doors and saw TV’s on ,and thought to myself how much they were all missing and I was glad to be me !
