This is an African lion male. As you can probably see, he is very big. They have these enormous paws, suggesting what a swipe with the front paw can do to prey! He is in the lion enclosure at our zoo, so not in a cage (thank goodness) He can roam in a very big area and people definitely cannot get too close. These lions are not miserable at all. We are in autumn and the lions are into their mating season, so he was attentive to the females with him (there are other males in the enclosure as well, they were each with their own group of females, that group together naturally, nothing is orchestrated. Great care is taken to keep the gene pool varied. I had to use a long lens for this image and I was fortunate that he faced in the right direction long enough for me to get the shot. I like his eyes. He had a group of females with him and was clearly the boss.

The Sri Lanka leopard…. A recent study has shown that Yala National Park has one of the highest recorded densities of leopards in the world, although this animal is still considered to be endangered. The Wilpattu National Park in Sri Lanka is also known as a good place to watch leopards. Leopards tend to be more readily observed in parts of Sri Lanka than in other countries where they share their habitat with more dominant competitors, such as lions or hyaenas. Like most cats, the Sri Lanka leopard is pragmatic in its choice of diet which can include small mammals, birds, reptiles as well as larger animals. Axis or spotted deer make up the majority of its diet in the dry zone. The animal also preys on sambar, barking deer, wild boar and monkeys. The cat has been known to tackle almost fully grown buffalos. The leopard hunts like other leopards, silently stalking its prey until it is within striking distance where it unleashes a burst of speed to quickly pursue and pounce on its victim. The prey is usually dispatched with a single bite to the throat.

18 month old Echo keeps an eye on all of us as his brother, Etosha takes a 2 minute nap. The African brown lion is a highly endangered species. The two cubs have been raised in captivity in a program to aid the species and keep them away from extinction. The program is run by ALERT, who now have three individual program sites running in Zimbabwe and Zambia. I had been deliberately avoiding drawing tigers, even though they are one of my most favorite animals, because I was intimidated by all of their stripes. So this piece was my challenge to myself. Sadly, the Bengal Tiger is an endangered species. Original measures 11×15”, mixed media (oil pastels, colored pencils, metallic paint pens, art pens) on cinnamon red ridged Strathmore paper. Taken At the Rhin and Lion Nature Reserve The white lion is occasionally found in wildlife reserves in South Africa and is a rare color mutation of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri). It has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world. White lions are not a separate subspecies and they have never been common in the wild. Regarded as divine by locals, white lions first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride’s book The White Lions of Timbavati. The greatest population of white lions is in zoos where they are deliberately bred for color. The population of the white lion is unknown but the most recent count was in 2004 and 30 were alive. White lions are not albino lions. Instead, the white color is caused by a recessive gene known as chinchilla or color inhibitor. They vary from blonde through to near white, however some can also be red. This coloration gives white lions a distinct disadvantage in nature because they are highly visible. This gives them away to their prey and makes them an attractive target for hunters. According to Linda Tucker, in “Mystery of the White Lions – Children of the Sun God” they are bred in camps in South Africa as trophies for canned hunts. In 2003, the Global White Lion Protection Trust (WLT) initiated the first ever reintroduction of white lions to their natural endemic range – the Greater Timbavati region in South Africa. Preliminary results have shown that the hunting success of the white lion pride was comparable to or higher than the wild prides (‘normal’ coloured / tawny) of the Timbavati itself (Turner 2005, Turner in prep.). This pride of “all” white lions has shattered the misperception that white lions cannot hunt successfully (within their natural endemic habitat) due to a perceived lack of camouflage. The long-term objective of the WLT is to restore the natural balance by reintroducing an integrated pride/s of white and tawny lions within their endemic range. White lions are a unique contribution to the biodiversity of the region and are revered by the local communities that hold them sacred.
