Gerardmer (France), September 2009. / Tour de l’Avenir (the biggest nations cup of the under-23 races), stage 6 (Chateau Salins – Gerardmer). The last man for his final 500 metres at the Col the Martimpre. Or is he the first tourist? In either way, the SAG wagons are just behind to sweep him up. The Broom Waggon is the affectionate name for the vehicle that follows a Cycle Road Race picking up stragglers (or sweeping them up) who are unable to make it to the finish the race within the time permitted. / The broom waggon is colloquially known as the sag wagon. SAG is an acronym which stands for Supplies and Gear. By extension, cycle-touring groups which have a vehicle to carry their luggage and food are now said to be “sagged” in that they have a vehicle that carries supplies and gear for the participants in the ride. La Bresse, France, September 2009. The Vosges area is known for its spectacular climbing stages. One artist made a salute to the Tour de France passing La Bresse in July. Well, I salute that artist with this shot. The capture was particular difficult due to the dark granite and the intense sun. I tried flashing to enlighten the statue, but the minimum of 1/200 sec was way to long for a nice sky. Nikon D90 with Tamron 10-20 mm F4: / @ 14 mm, f4.0, 1/800 sec.
