Farmers in the past shifted sheep over many miles by droving. This was taken at the end of the droving era, as horses were no longer on farms, but being replaced by motor-bikes. Since this farmer retired there have been no more sheep on roads in this area.

Bethanga Bridge was built between 1927 and 1930 as a joint venture between New South Wales and Victoria as part of the Hume Dam project as a key element of the River Murray Waters Agreement put in place in 1915 by the Victorian, New South Wales, South Australian and Federal governments to regulate the flow of the Murray River as a provision against drought and to ensure that the three states received their agreed share of water. I think this is the fullest I have seen the weir. Taken with a Pentax camera on Kodachrome 200 film.
This is the deepest I have seen the Hume Weir from this side. The Bethanga bridge does not leap across the spaces, but almost floats on the surface. Taken with a Pentax camera and Pentax 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
This is taken some half hour after a previous shot of the bridge from the Bethanga side of the Hume weir. We crossed the bridge into New south Wales and look back across the Murray arm to the Victorian hills behind Bethanga. This is the only time I have seen a reflection of the bridge in the water, as usually the water has been too low to reflect the bridge like this. Taken with a Pentax camera and Pentax 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
Hot day and the water on the way down. The shade of the clump of pines on the New Soutrh Wales bank is so thick on such a day, a pleasant place for lunch. Taken with a Pentax Z1p camera and Pentax 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome 200 film. 1/90 f 11
When I was young my aunt lived along this road, down near where the trees are growing on the right hand side. The town of Bethanga was a poor man’s gold field and a great deal of the area at the foot of the hills in the distance was township. My grandfather was one of the discovers of gold, and sold out to a company after 12 or more months working the mine himself. I can remember many buildings there on both sides of the road, and driving through old mine workings up the road which you can still see leading out over the gap to the top right. There are slag heaps visible from the old heat treatment plant of the gold mine. / This particular road I am on was the easy way over Talgarno gap, but a longer one, and when motor cars became more efficient at climbing hills this road was closed.
