i want to first give marianne a HUGE thanks and Hug for wanting this print and asking me to upload to buy it, im so honored and speechless at the same time. to have another photographer that you admire and adore, to want to buy Your work..wow the feeling cant be put into words. / so i have to ask the people that read this, exactly how do you handle selling your work when you know who the buyer is? / for me..each time my work sells to someone i know, i feel like i should say more then just ..thanks i still close up when i know the person buying my work, even here locally my chief with the fire dept and his wife, are starting up a collection of my work in their home. / i find myself…shy!! believe it or not! LOL / i have realized tho..i dont ever want to lose that humbleness (that a word? is now) of someone thinking my photography is good enough to hang in their home, or give as a gift, who knows..maybe they know im very humbled at the fact they want my work? so Marianne…Thank You so much!! for the faith you have always had in me, for supporting me, for helping me with my photography, by putting better equipment in my hands, for being one of the bestest people that has ever come into my life. you will always be an angel in my eyes…thank you this is what she bought

  • Red Bubble - Taking it to the next level.

RedBubble – Taking it to the next level? Why are we here? a) A platform in which to exhibit our artwork / b) A place to admire and be inspired by the work of others. / c) Ultimately we would all like to sell our work. I am very pleased to note that lately the Bubble is also becoming a social network. I wait for the comments from such as Meach ready to fall off my chair with laughter. But unlike Facebook (“See you down the pub at 9pm M8T”) the Bubble has PURPOSE!! / And the purpose is for the production of BEST WORK. There are those out there who love art and buy it for that reason. But there must be billions out there who think art is something you have to take out a second mortgage in order to purchase. And yet here we are offering for sale reasonably priced original and brilliant artwork. Red Bubble and in my own modest way are promoting the works. You recall I made the suggestion a while back that my fellow moderators should do some promotion work specific to their own groups. I was a bit sad to note that quite a few rejected my journal suggestion to their group. Hope they took it on board anyway. There has been a lot of hot air expelled recently about reply buttons, taking offence and unpleasant criticisms. In a way this is good because it brings peeps out of the woodwork to discuss. Which brings me to my point (at last!)…… It seems to me that in order to sell to the masses we really do need follow the overiding purpose of the Bubble and display only BEST WORK. / To this end I would like to make the following suggestion regarding the use comments box. Superb, wonderful and stunning are fine where appropriate but let’s take it a stage further; help others to achieve the Best Artwork. Perhaps an example would be – some months ago I spotted a seascape where the horizon was sloping downhill. I bravely asked if this was ‘meant’ and if not using my limited experience of photoshop I explained how to level it up. A few days ago I spotted another thing that could improve an artwork but wasn’t brave enough to place it in comments and sent a bubblemail instead. I was relieved to note that both comments were gratefully received Occasionally there is a dull photo that is good as a concept but would benefit 100% just with the addition of a drop of ‘contrast’. Two things then. BE BRAVE and use the comment box to help that person (and others) to technically to improve their artwork. And two – all of us should write the following on a post-it and stick it on our monitors, “I will not take offence if someone suggests an improvement to my work”. I am not suggesting that one should suggest conceptual improvements but comments like ‘why not re-shoot from a different angle’ or ‘crop it so the object is filling the frame much more’, are acceptable. In other words stick to technical comments. / Peeps offering comments like “That picture is cr*p” should be banned from the site I reckon. Let’s all of us get super-interactive. Use the comment box to boost the standard of our artwork so as the masses start to log-on big time they are presented with Best Work. / Over all remember the words next to the comments button – PLESE PLAY NICE. As a final thought to moderators – I will be seeking ways of splitting the Watersports and Activities group artwork into sub-groups i.e. Sailing, rowing, surfing, underwater, etc etc so that when a punter or advertising agency comes on line it will narrow their search. If anyone can help me with that I won’t be offended – honest. LOL LOVE & PEACE / & “ALRIGHT THEN MY BIRDS, MY HANSOMES!!!!! ‘avin a good day do ‘ee”. P.S. That’s A Proper Cornish greeting hence no question mark at the end of the greets. The second one responds with “yes” or “Alright Boy” or “maid”. Honestly, how can anyone take offence at being called ‘Hun’ – We are in a global Village now. Everyone has a different up-bringing / social education / way of being. Andy / Moderator / Watersports & Activities Group.

2.14pm – Wednesday afternoon The keys on this plastic alphabet are sticky. The seat has no back and the minutes are expensive. The sub audible hum of ten thousand anxious people reverberate through the terminal floor. The timeless neon glow of Gates 31-40, Baggage Claim, Toilets and a Foodcourt burn into my pores. A voice informs me that Mr Nigel Sankey should really hurry along to Gate 36, because all the people already wedged onto the plane are getting seriously annoyed. In another life our original flight had not suffered the generic ‘engineering difficulties’ and we were already home, but in this life we were destined to spend half a day in Sydney airport at an internet cafe, so still in this life I wrench the keyboard from a neighbouring computer and walk resolutely towards the mannequins at the Virgin Service Desk, a blank look in my eye. / How did it come to this? 7.55am – Earlier that same day El Presidente and I burst into the breakfast room of the Shangri La hotel in Sydney, where NetGuide are holding the ceremony of their yearly internet awards. The room goes slightly quiet, the dog in the corner ceases playing the piano, and the 100% suited and booted occupants turn to look at these last minute arrivals, one in a vibrant red limited edition RedBubble tee, the other in a faux-Napoleonic military jacket. I wave my cane in the direction of some empty seats and we take our place between the MD of eBay and a man from the Bureau of Meteorology. A general air that we may be ‘chancers’ prevails. The ceremony begins, and decorum is held in fine corporate silence, broken by an intermittent golf clap as another nervous individual waddles up to claim their glass shard. The 14th prize is for Best New Site, and it is won by a company called Web Menu, but also has a Highly Commended Category, which RedBubble wins. None of the other categories really have second place awards, and so we still appear like we are here for the free breakfast. The final two awards, however, are a little more prestigious, and they begin with the ‘People’s Choice’ which NetGuide are very proud of, and after building it up to unprecendented heights they announce that RedBubble has conquered it without question. You can hear the room inhale in unison, then vigourously clap. Afterwards everyone was very friendly, coming over to congratulate and talk details, I was even accosted by one man in the gents but I requested he wait until I finish, I think he had something to do with the ceremony. We hand out some t-shirts and greetings cards and even some bubbles, which could be seen floating around the room towards the end of the event. 9.45am After a suitably cheesy photoshoot, we jump into a taxi and head for the airport and hopefully, a quick flight home. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I’d just like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the whole team, to thank all of you, and not just all of you who managed to read this whole post, or even all of you who voted for us, but ALL of you. Because you really do make this site as vibrant as it is, without you we’re nothing, well, not nothing, we’d be a bunch of nerds in a room with some flashy computers and an endless biscuit supply, but I don’t think there’s an award for that. / So thanks and don’t stop now, we’re just getting warmed up. onetonshadow, and everybody else Oh and big up to NetGuide for the whole event, bacon and free mousemats, here’s what they have to say about it Addendum / I’d also like to thank the mighty Anne van Alkemade for stumbling across the competition in the first place and alerting our eager community. May your days be filled with fine wines and tasty cakes.

Facebook provides a place for you to represent your business, and that is Facebook Pages (here my page). Here a video how to install Facebook Pages if you are a beginner… And here I want to introduce the 6 best FACEBOOK PAGES ADDs… ARTSHARE Great to upload the art of your choice with links to your purchasing site… BLOG BOX There you can import your website contents via rss and write notes… SOCIAL RSS Here you can import up to 5 of favorite rss feeds… TWITTER You can post to Twitter directly from Facebook, see all your followed twitters and display your twitter-posts to your profile at Facebook. MARKETPLACE You can sell your art and shirts also directly from Facebook! • Urban Wildlife Picture Book

I am thinking of putting together a book showing the best of our Urban Wildlife Group in time for Christmas. The people I will use to publish the book would be Blurb.com who have software that allows one to design a very professional looking book including a dust jacket with inner flaps. Their pages also allow for text so one can make anything from a coffee table extravaganza to a recipe book. In order to do this, I would invite members to submit work that they consider worthy and I would also invite members whose work I admire who may have missed these notifications. For work submitted, I propose using a ‘Challenge’. It would be called the ‘Book Challenge’ and will allow you to submit one photograph of your best work. This would not be a challenge in the true sense, but would be a place to initially start gathering work for consideration. Other work would have to be submitted by email if you think it is worthy. All published photographers would have a full credit so we also need to know your real name, not your nickname! All those submitting work whether it be by invite or via the challenge, would also have to send me their images by email. Images must be of the highest quality and I would recommend sending full size images where possible. An accompanying text must also be sent with the submission. Basically this should say what the creature is and where it was photographed. Locations must not be vague, we will have a global audience as usual so ‘my back yard’ will not do, it tells us nothing. ‘My back yard, Tuscon, Texas, USA is better. The text is very important. One or two condensed but informative paragraphs are ideal telling what we are looking at, where it was photographed and how. Any interesting information about the species may also help, but please use your own words; don’t just ‘lift’ your text from Wikipedia or the like. Urban Wildlife means precisely that. It means the picture must be taken within the confines of a city or town. If it is two miles out from the city perched on a pole or crossing the road it is no longer ‘urban’. I really would like to stick to the strict confines of our group so please only submit pictures that were NOT taken out in the country or wild coast. A park within the city is fine, a park outside the city is not. So to sum up… 1. Your very best work. Jpeg Images only. / 2. Well written and informative accompanying text. / 3. Send you full size image and text (use Notepad to create a .txt file) to info@johnhootonphotography.com / 4, Include the URL of your picture so that I have a quick reference in Urban Wildlife c/o RedBubble. Although Christmas might sound quite a long way away, I have got to select, edit and compile the book by about mid November at the latest, so you can start submitting work straight away. I will limit the works to up to four per person. I think October 31st will be about the last date for submissions. I cannot guarantee that your work will appear in the book, it will be a compilation of the best of the best so there will be a limit on the number of pictures we can publish, however, I encourage you to submit your best work, and will very much welcome your effort whether it is published or not. I will probably plan the book in chapters, so we might have Birds, Insects, Butterflies, Wildlife, Mammals, Reptiles. I will probably skip flowers. We don’t have enough of them and there are stacks of books on flowers that are a subject on their own.. Bear in mind what our group is about. Start digging through your pictures and let’s create a book that we can be really proud of. By the way, books sell for a profit on Blurb and if by some miracle we happen to create a best seller, then profits would be divided up amongst the photographers on a picture by picture basis. The coffers would be reviewed every quarter. Let me know what you think by commenting, and I will attempt to answer any questions and reply here. John

About 4 months ago my sister told me that one of her friends was looking through our photos from our 2008 Europe trip. Her friend works for a publishing company, and was impressed by the shots she saw, and wanted to use them in a book on Paris she was publishing. While I was excited at the time, didn’t get my hopes up about it, until it was actually done. In true Parmi style, I totally forgot about this until today, when a copy of the book turned up in the mail for me! The book is set for release on Dec 1st I am currently in a state of shock that 6 photos (5 of mine and 1 of my sister’s) have been used in the book! I had to make a journal entry to commemorate the event :) Below are the shots from the book and the original photos that I took while in Paris. So fitting that the book itself is PARIS – A Personal Guide To The City’s Best. A 300+ page hard cover book on Paris culture, dining, accommodation, mixed in with some of Bennett’s French recipes. (Shannon Bennett is the owner of internationally renowned restaurant, Vue de monde in Melbourne) Given that Paris is quite possibly my favourite city I have visited so far, this was poetic in it’s own way. / Paris Underground / My sister’s photo / Notre Dame / Notre Dame / Notre Dame / Pantheon Link to the book online All book shots taken from Shannon Bennett’s PARIS – A Guide To The City’s Best. Published by The Miegunyah Press 2009, copyright to Melbourne University Publishing Limited. Edit: I left to make a cup of coffee and came back to a massive outpouring of encouragement and congrats from so many of you! YOU GUYS ROCK! I am so supported on here by all of you and I can’t even express in words how incredible that feels! Thank you just doesn’t cut it!!! :)

Part 1: The T-Shirt It’s the end of the year, a time when most magazines and TV shows are compiling rehashed versions of last year’s ‘Best of…’ lists because they are tired and lazy and want to knock off early and drink eggnog or white spirit or something. It’s easy editorial. I’m taking that one step further, I want you to compile it. Actually I just want to hear your favourite t-shirts of the last year. The ones that you wished you’d designed, or the ones that made you laugh so hard your breakfast came back out, or the ones that showed such skill with a pencil you ran out of descriptive adjectives in praise. Or perhaps just one of your own, that made you feel like you’d achieved some sort of personal talent goal. Here’s my favourite, it’s a commissioned design by dagrove of my wife. It’s so accurate I feel I can reach out and touch her. / Super illustration. Now, as they say in the playground after school, show me yours….. Part 2: The Comment (Here you will find context) Commenting is the most immediate aspect to RedBubble, it’s often your first contact with an artist, buyer or future collaborator. A positive comment can shape your day, alter how you feel about an artwork, challenge your thinking or just make you laugh. And this works both ways, your words have the power to significantly improve someone’s mood. Never underestimate the importance of a good hearty comment. So my favourite of 2009, or possibly the most shocking, was from Colleen on this here Buyers’ Booth. For context, I had stated: ”....or possibly I’m now going to have my red underwear stripped from me in a libel case…..” To which I received this: I finished early that day. Throw me the best comment you’ve received, you can just copy and paste the text below, and then link me, or get all clever with a screenshot. I’ll leave that up to you. Part 3: The Photograph We’re on a roll here, there’s a great list of your favourite tees and an unprecendented response to the power of the comment. Let’s not waste one second, and move on to your favourite photograph of the year, by a friend, your aunt, yourself or someone with a peculiar avatar and confusing name that you’ve never met. Or even believe exists. This is my favourite of 2009, I can’t work out if rhorsfield was in a plane himself, on a tower or what, but I like to think he had the Red Arrows in a box next to him like a firework, and just lit the fuse… Right, stop what you’re doing and show me your favourite photo, unless what you are doing is looking for your favourite photo. Part 4: The Group It’s the end of the year, we’re too tired for real editorial, so we’re taking notes from all other media and working on Best Of’s instead. We’ve covered Tees, Comments, and Photos. Next up, Groups. Aren’t they great? Lots of friends in one place, talking about something specifically of interest to you. Like Alpacas. I love alpacas. So I joined this most excellent group, All About Alpacas. I don’t get to take part much because you keep selling stuff so I have to keep writing emails. In fact I have not met many alpacas because the wife is allergic to their teeth, but I am looking forward to them having a group alpaca tee challenge. I’ll be right in there. So what’s your favourite group eh? Where do you feel right at home with a bunch of bubblers with similar tastes? Part 5: The Illustration I can’t draw. Or paint. To be quite honest walking is a bit of a mission, and getting dressed is something I need to allow at least half a day for. So when I see people in clothes, or incredible illustrations, I feel weak at the knees. The skill that some have on RedBubble for getting paint from a tube onto a canvas using only some camel hair on the end of a stick makes me want to shake them firmly by the hand and tell them just how much they are improving the colour of the world. Isn’t it amazing? It seems it was 1970 just three days ago…... / The 70’s was a monumental time for me personally, graduating from high school, venturing off to explore the world, marrying my first husband, experiencing the miracle of the birth of my first child, surviving an almost fatal car accident and almost simultaneously suffering the sudden death of my beloved Father, which left a vacant gaping wound in my heart that took years to heal…...... as well as experiencing devastating emotional and physical abuse and a heartbreaking divorce…. The 70’s was a time of innocence, and a loss of innocence. .. yet, I learned so much and I have no regrets. I became independent, reevaluated my belief system, shed my childhood conditioning, totally redefining my life as I discovered my own personal and spiritual values defining who I am, what I stand for and what I believe. I returned to my childlike innocence. I embrace my rich and dynamic cultural heritage, opened my eyes and my heart and embraced other cultures and languages as well. I am grateful for every experience, for every lesson I have learned from every person I have met and I am grateful for every good thing that has happened in my life. Fast forward to the 80’s with several moves on the mainland from the east coast to the west and all points in between, with several transcontinental moves, enjoying several years living in Europe, exploring other countries and mastering foreign languages. The 80’s was a time of enlightenment, a time for spiritual ascension and moments of profound revelations, a new marriage, delighting in the births of two more beautiful children. And the music of the 80’s was awesome. I especially loved U2. The 80’s was prime time for me. I wish I looked now like I looked in the 80’s with long thick auburn hair and flawless ivory skin. :)))) It was a decade of working and playing and personal growth and realizing that I could create my own reality as I followed my dreams. The 90’s were certainly interesting. Another divorce. I devoted most of those years as well to nurturing my young children and refining my career. Imagine my surprise and dismay when my Irish heritage manifested itself as my rich auburn hair transformed virtually overnight to a platinum blonde. It is still a surprise each time I look into the mirror. It was a time of tremendous sacrifice as well and often times I worked three jobs as I explored many interests and tried so hard to maintain a good balance in my life. Such as Time flies and the last decade certainly seems to have breezed by as if in a dream. From the year 2000 to 2009 so much has happened I could publish a book and it would probably be a best seller for the places I have been, the people I have met and the things that have happened are so fascinating. I am so amazed that it is now the year 2010. So much has happened this last year. I was single and independent almost 19 years when I met Jacob. And now this year Jacob and I celebrated our first year of marriage. I have met hundreds of members of our family on his side here on Maui. Most everyone on Maui is related to us. If they are Hawaiian, they are probably our ohana. :)) We have made many new friends and lost a couple of frenemies :)) You know who they are, the ones who pretend to be your friends, but they are really your enemy and when you have a disagreement they only do their best to slander you and bring you down as they project and impose their own personal opinion, belief or value system on you without regard for your truth or your heart. The true friends who remain have my best interests at heart, as I do theirs, and they help to protect my heart. I am grateful for my true friends. We have experienced some tragic very sad events as well. It certainly hasn’t been all fun in the sun. We have also buried many of my husbands family and life long friends in 2009. Through it all we face each day our own mortality. Every day we realise, we remember and acknowlege that each day is a gift. / We focus on the good things in life. Yet, most of all we have had tremendous fun and enjoyed many wonderful, some truly extraordinary experiences here on the island. For me personally it has been educational in so many ways. No one can really know the Hawaiian culture unless you are submerged in it. You may come here on holiday and explore the island, shop the beautiful galleries and gift shoppes, see the sights and explore the ocean, the seacliffs, the cloud forests, the rain forests and the many beautiful beaches, yet to truly know Hawai’i and understand this magnificent culture, you must live here. I try to share this beauty with all of you through my imagery. I am so happy to hear from you when you leave a note and let me know my work and the splendid poetry I search for and attach to my images to breathe life into them speaks to your heart. / / On another happy note, in a couple of weeks my son and his wife will be welcoming the birth of their first child, a precious baby girl. She will be my fifth grandchild and Jacob’s tenth. Imagine that, between us we have 15 grandchildren. Wow. My son is my youngest child and I cannot explain how I feel knowing he will soon be holding his own child in his arms. If I could wave my magic wand she would be born here on the island. How I wish we could, it would be so wonderful as I have not seen my children in three years and I would love for this child to be born on Maui. I have three beautiful talented children. My oldest daughter (the one I grew up with) is married with 4 beautiful children. My second daughter is still single (thank God) and attending university studying to be a graphic designer. And my son is having a child. I miss them all so much and I love them more than my own life. Jacob has 7 beautiful children, and we are truly blessed, for our children are our legacy and they are our greatest gifts in life. To all our family and friends, we wish you love and sweet compassion. We wish you tremendous success and every happiness. May you all enjoy a fabulous new year!!! / / Aloha oukou / E pili mau na pomaika`i ia `oe / `Okole maluna Jacob and Sharon Mau /
