  • Oil On canvas 1.5m x 1.5m original 4 sale @ $1500.00 framed

  • The Swiss railway system was a joy to travel on. I did one night trip which had to be canceled when an accident occurred on the track ahead. The staff were excellent in getting a dumb Australian who could only speak OZ to change trains, and go by a completely different route to get to his destination not on original time, but close enough that no major connections were missed.

  • Bear and the city
    by egold

    US$3.99–US$91.20

BEAR (noun) / 1. any of the plantigrade, carnivorous or omnivorous mammals of the family Ursidae, having massive bodies, coarse heavy fur, relatively short limbs, and almost rudimentary tails. / 2. a gruff, burly, clumsy, bad-mannered, or rude person. / 3. a person who believes that market prices, esp. of stocks, will decline (opposed to bull ). / 4. a player at cards who rarely bluffs. Almost everybody saw bears in Zoo. Somebody even met them in real life… / A lot of different kinds of bears live on Earth: brown bear, American black bear, grizzly, polar bear, panda and many more… But not everyone knows that somewhere near the highest mountains in Europe is the city of bears, the place you can see bears everywhere… The name of this city is Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen founded the city on the River Aare in 1191 and allegedly named it Bern after a bear (Bär in German) he had killed. It was made an Imperial Free City by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1218 after Berthold died without an heir. In 1353 Bern joined the young Swiss Confederation, becoming a leading member of the new state. It invaded and conquered Aargau in 1415 and Vaud in 1536, as well as other smaller territories, thereby becoming the largest city-state north of the Alps. It was occupied by French troops in 1798 during the French Revolutionary Wars, when it was stripped of most of its territories. In 1831 the city became the capital of the Canton of Bern and in 1848 it additionally became the Swiss capital. The Bear is a symbol of this city and you can see his depictions or sculptures everywhere – on a walls, road and street signs, on Zytglogge (the oldest towerclock of 15-16 centuries) in it’s mechanical figures, on 11 historical fountains of 16 century. One of them Zähringerbrunnen (1535) has a bear in armour holding the standard of Berthold von Zähringer, Bern’s founder. / Since the 16th century, the city has had a bear pit (the Bärengraben), when you can see those bears alive.

  • Panoramic view, from Nydeggbrücke bridge, of the river Aare which seperates the eastern and western halves of the city of Berne, Switzerland, overlooking the older Untertorbrücke bridge. Wikipedia entry for this explains why this is an European landmark because “Built in its current form in 1461–89, it is the oldest of Berne’s Aar bridges, and was the city’s only bridge up until the middle of the 19th century.” Featured in Uniquely Switzerland on Apr 5 2009 / Top 10 in Famous Bridges challenge / Top 10 in ROOFTOPS challenge Some of my other work: / / / © Kuntal Daftary

  • My first flight was in a DC3 from Corowa to Sydney at the start of this trip. The trip from Bern to Zurich was also by DC3, but a plane that appeared in much better condition than the Australian one. The flight was no safer. They both flew at a height which gave excellent views of the country you were passing over, which made a very interesting flight for me. / Like the Corowa airport the only rigid tarmac was where refueling took place, and the rest of the airstrip was grass. There were no barriers to movement of passengers.

  • This is another of the paintings commissioned to display the historic homes of New Bern, North Carolina. This home was built by a lumber baron or whatever you might call him back at the turn of the 19th century. The home is beautiful with the turrets, leaded glass, and the elaborate ornate wood. US$4.32–US$98.80

One of the mascots of the city of Bern, Switzerland. Even though the two of them live together in a concrete jungle, they seemed really happy. This one was really curious to see what us Aussies were doing.

  • Once upon a time I travelled around Europe with my backpack. I spent a few months in the UK before venturing through the other countries. / Most of the time I slept on trains, in train stations, youth hostels and for about 2 weeks, in a tent during a World Moot at Kandersteg, Switzerland (a scouting event for Rovers from all around the world). / These are what I consider the best from around Europe. If you fancy different photos from my collection, just ask ;D
