Zurückbleiben bitte The woman who makes the announcements over the public transport system in Berlin has one of the sexiest voices I’ve heard. German and Dutch have the power to knock me off my feet in most cases anyway: truly the languages of seduction. Although just when I’d announced this to a bemused Dave Spencer (‘you sure about that?’), walking along Mühlenstraße, a shrill shriek rang out behind us enquiring about the latest hockey results, in a voice best described as that of a fishwife. ‘Hmmm, so sexy’ was Dave’s dry reply as we walked into Friedrichshain. I couldn’t really argue. I’ve been riding the U-bahn all over Berlin, listening to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and scribbling in my little red notebook. The city always seems in a constant state of regeneration; construction sites and derelict buildings next to shiny department stores and vibrant graffiti. And that’s what I adore most about Berlin, I think: it’s constant ability to renew and recover. You’ve got the shadow of the Nazi regime and the effects of the secret Stasi police still felt by many, but it only seems to encourage an ebullient ‘fuck you, I can do this’ spirit. I’ve always been quite obsessed with the Berlin Wall – I was living in Europe when it fell, and it was a focus of my degree in Germanic languages. I always end up there when I’m in town. Dave took me to the East Side Gallery, a stretch of the Wall covered in murals and running alongside the Spree River. It’s the scene of my favourite Red Bubble photo, but as his camera was stolen (a curse on them and their photos!) pics were taken with my basic camera. This morn I sat on the steps of the Reichstag with a cup of mulled wine, rain falling on my red riding coat as I tried to imagine what had passed there….chronic daydreamer that I am. But I always, always find myself in Bebelplatz. This is the scene of the Nazi book burnings, and I tend to spend hours here. I just heard that on the anniversary of the book burnings, every 10th May, people gather with pillows, candles and books, and read out their favourite passages from those that were burnt. This place haunts me every time I’m in Berlin…..I think I’ll plan my next trip for May. I could live here. I feel that each time I’m here but really, my European passport is burning a hole in my pocket and I long to resuscitate my German. How can you not love a language where the word for curious is made of the words new and greedy put together (neugerig)? How can you not love a city where the coffee cups are as big as soup mugs, where the U-bahn goes all night and the women take your breath away and Nina Hagen calls home? Berlin is magical, and I’m not finished with her yet. Many thanks to Dave for showing me around Friedrichshain bars, leading me to my first ever scharwarma, and only making fun of me twice. Well, three times if you count that man in the violently pink shirt (so, so wrong). Tonight: Iceland! I’ll give the last word to Dave, who shivered and said ‘It’s never good when the fridge is warmer than outside.’ We’ll see.

In just under 4 hours I’ll be flying out to meet up with Justin at RailsConf EU in Berlin. That’s pretty exciting. After that I’m stopping off in Munich for a few days on my way home. Would you believe there is a festival in Munich while I’m there celebrating two of the most important things in my life – swing dancing and beer. I reckon’ it’s going to be a pretty good week. See you all next Monday. I should probably get to the airport now.

First a belated thanks to everyone who wished me luck and supported me in my exhibition at Fish out of Water, during Adelaide’s SALA Festival. It went very well and I sold 4 paintings! I’m just about to take off on a trip to Europe, and although I have been through Europe before many years ago, it was on the tail end of a very long crazy overland journey through Asia, I was sick, tired and over travelling. It was a rushed, very low budget, and missed out all the art and history. I’m very excited to be going to Rome, Florence and Venice, for a few days each, as well as 10 days in Paris. Also I can’t wait to check out the art scene in Berlin, which is thriving and flourishing from what I hear. I’m also going to Amsterdam, Geneva and Singapore. If I can I might even go on a tour of of the Hadron Collider – hope I don’t fall into a mini black hole! I plan on taking heaps of photos, and sharing some of my experiences here. I haven’t been very prolific in my journal here so far, maybe that will change in the future.

Thankyou so much to the team at Redbubble. / Over the past few weeks I have been buying t shirts from Redbubble for the opening of an exhibition of 5 Melbourne artists in Berlin, Germany. Last week I ordered a t shirt and it arrived the next day.fantastic!!!!! Today ,Saturday I have ordered more and Im leaving in 5 days. Sorry guys, I know its pushing it….... . / Some info on the exhibition in Berlin and Paris: Hello to all, / I would like to invite you to my latest art exhibition. On the 27th of May 2007 Im heading off to Berlin and Paris to take part in and attend the opening of a collaborative exhibition with 4 other Melbourne artists in Berlin, Germany. After the exhibition I will be heading to Paris to do some creating and networking and should be back in Australia by August, that’s if I don’t get seduced by the “Parisian” way of life. GALLERY – twenty four Berlin:Paris:New York: Europe’s premier gallery for autodidactic and undiscovered artists from around the world presents….. Featuring Australian Artists: / “MELB 5” ANDREW MAY JENNY DAVIS TORI SWEDOSH CARLA ROSE KATE MURDOCH June 6th – 19th, 2007 Opening Reception: June 7th, 18:00 – 22:00 An exhibition of five artists living and working in Melbourne, the cultural capital of Australia. Berlin Germany, GALLERY twenty-four, is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “Melb 5” as part of its 2007 SALON: Berlin Project. The artists have created works on canvas inspired by the diverse and physically vast nature of the Australian continent. Shifting their influences between the natural and man-made world this collective of Australian artists will offer a rare opportunity to view contemporary Australian painting outside its geographical isolation. These works will demonstrate the unique and fresh aesthetic apparent in a society still emerging after a relatively short history. By contrast the European aesthetic is informed by centuries of social and cultural development. This exhibition aims to raise awareness of painting from the southern hemisphere to a European audience. The predominantly abstract works utilize the language of colour and form to cross boundaries. Painting is reinforced as a medium with an ability to communicate on a universal level regardless of nationality. Hi everyone , Below is a small piece of writing I did a few days ago in Paris. / Yes Im still stuck in Paris …........poor me with the nice summer days but soon it will / be back to reality and to the cold Melbourne weather early nights on the electric blanket with the cats The Berlin exhibition finally went ahead after a big stuff up. / The curator lost the plot with the gallery owner and we lost our exhibition space. / Luckily the artists found another exhibition space within a week and we had our opening. / Unfortunetly, I didnt make it to the opening. / With all that was going on I left my bookings for Berlin too late so I was unable to get a flight in time from Paris to Berlin or accomdation because of the G8 summit. / But it all turned out alright in the end . MANY THANKS!!!!!!! to the artists who worked so hard sorting out the mess . Over the years I have written some small pieces in my journals but I have never really shown anyone….............its a little piece connected to some paintings I did a few years ago after receiving letters and photos from a soldier in Iraq ; The correspondence stopped oneday then nothing was heard from him again. / Sometimes I find it a release to get it down in writing instead of in a painting, sculpture or photography etc ; I guess its just another tool I use to express myself / / Letters from the Border The flower rose from the desert floor pushing its way through the dry hard crust, like a white rag flapping its surrender into the dust. Time slowed to a halt for one soldier. He clicked the camera, / an interruption to the vile, nauseating slaughter, he had witnessed earlier that morning . The image arrived penetrating the depths of her soul. / She knew the little desert flower from the border would change the fragility of humanity forever. cheers / Jenny

At least I would quite like to be after my recent visit there! I have to say that I was surprised as to how much there was to see (and photograph) in the city – my only real problem was that I wasn’t there for long enough! Of particular interest to me was the Berlin Wall and remnants of East German architecture and influence – mainly because it featured so much in the news in my childhood along with the fall of the wall in 1989 while I was at University. The modern architecture that is quickly filling up the spaces that “no-mans-land” used to take up is also fantastic. A selection of my images can be viewed HERE and I hope to post more on my own website later in the month. In addition to the sightseeing, the food and restaurants were excellent. If you have an opportunity for a European city break I cannot recommend it enough. On a completely different subject – One problem with a blog or any other kind of update is that when you are busy and have lots to talk about you have no time to update it, and when you have the time nothing is happening! I am currently snowed under with portrait work, restocking outlets etc that I barely have time to look at redbubble…..so bear with me if you make a comment and don’t hear back.

February 1, 2006 / 17:43 – 21:14 (06:02 – 21:14) even though i worked through / the night the day before, / and fell asleep working / on the presentation / i got up promptly with my alarm, / showered, shaved, got dressed, / ashamed of my shoes / repacked my things [take off my new glasses because my eyes hurt] which was good because / as i was walking to the bus / i didn’t remember seeing / the map i needed / and went back inside / got the map and hurried to / the bus stop. / two minutes later came the / right bus (number 1) took me / to the train station, / couldn’t finish my cigarette couldn’t buy the train ticket / at the counter (no service) / couldn’t pay for the train ticket / at the machine (no card) / got on the train 5 minutes later / ICE BERLIN OSTBAHNHOF / opened my laptop / and continued coding, / smoothing the layout, / patching features, / adding a library… no one on the train even asked me / for a ticket, i could have paid. / (later i lied about this.)
