Original digital photograph. Taken with a Sony Full HD 1080 Cyber Shot camera. Many people do not know (I didn’t until I went on this drive) that you can’t herd Buffalo, you drive them…the American Bison is our representation of the African Rhino…A full grown Male Buffalo can over turn a truck and kill a horse in the blink of an eye. I had it explained to me by one of the many professional drovers, that you have to make the “Lows” as they are called..think it is their idea to go in a certain direction… and you can’t push them like a herd of cattle…it is the hardest job on the face of this earth. A Cowboy can not get within 25 feet of the outside line because Buffalo have explosive tempers and pretty much hate horses. / Taking pictures of this drive was like filming an epic saga of history…it truly felt as if we were all in this time warp of 200 years ago. My husband and I were invited by the Gov. of South Dakota to help with the yearly Buffalo Roundup. This is an event that takes place every year to round up the 2000 plus herd of Buffalo of the Black Hills and take them over 25 miles to holding pens for vaccination, doctoring and culling. / This was the most awesome experience…all on horse back and photo opportunities of a lifetime. Meet Chula…Means little or pretty little girl…she came onto our desert property two weeks ago. She was starved, delirious and close to death. Still a puppy, maybe eight or nine months old…she stumbled up to my husband, all fear burned away long ago by starvation and just laid down and began a long mournful cry. / Naturally he called me, I went out and it was so sad that I got tears in my eyes. / We live out in the desert and we see strays now and then or dogs that may live close by and are just on scent…but over the last several months we are starting to see our desert community become a dumping ground for animals (mostly dogs). As the belts tighten and people can’t afford to feed themselves let alone an animal, guess who loses? / Anyway, I fed her and she slept for five hours…woke up, eyes had cleared some, I fed her a bit more and she slept for three more hours. Finally woke up and that was two weeks ago. / I guess Chula is now part of our family, much to the distain of our three other SPOILED RESCUE DOGS…they seem to forget that they too were once in Chula’s place! / Well we have room and it is a “kill center” in the nearest town shelter…it they are not adopted out in 72 hours the shelter puts down the animals…I just could not do that to this dog… / So far I have lost two patio pillows, one tennis shoe and she insists on doing her business in my flower beds, but that is okay…I have taken responsibility for every animal that I found or found me…they have no choice. / Since she came to us I have counted seven more stray wandering dogs and a black cat lived in the garage for a few days and moved on…and now I hear rumors that people are turning out their horses in the area because they can’t feed them. / Please donate to a local shelter…go to the store and buy a big bag of dog food or cat food to help feed the overflowing numbers of abandonded animals…or find a little more space in your heart for an animal that has no choice. Had a request a few months ago from George Gantt, one of the hosts of The Wild West Show Group ... for a portrait of Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood)....This is for you George! This is a Prismacolor Pencil, Pen and Ink and just a bit of Pastel Pencil. / Drawn on card stock, acid free, smooth bonded, artist drawing paper. I have also shown the steps I go through to achieve my drawings. This is for my art students that are using my RB site for study….and for all of you here at RB who may have wondered what my process is. First I draw a detailed graphite line drawing ( I love to draw so this is a fun part for me) and then I go in and play in the shadows. I tell my students to try and play in the shadows for as long a they can…this “grounds” the drawing and keeps everything in perspective…at least for me… Next, I develope the face…I feel if the face does not turn out…what is the point…I find lots of my students go to other less demanding areas to start…it turns out great and then they suffer the anexity of composing the face. This is when the left brain can start hollering VERY LOUD to put the pencils down and quit. This is why I ALWAYS do the face first. After I am satisfied with the face in its early form… I now feel that I can start my way through the rest of the drawing. Going back into the shadows and grounding the rest of the portrait. Then it is just a tighting up process…defining my colors, going in with the high-lights to seal the drawing. / Total drawing time is about 4 hours, less if I don’t find myself fighting with what colors to blend to get the effect I desire…some drawings feel like they draw themselves, others can challenge everything I feel I know. / Josey was a joy… / Thanks for viewing my art.
Another capture from my day at the little Utah museum…I am sure glad there are those of you who seem to enjoy the images, energy, message and memories that I seem to need to convey through this photography… / I was the only person in museum that day for almost 3 hours!...needless to say I saw a capture in every direction. The titles for my pictures are usually the first word (s) that pops into my mind when I see the composition. This is also the way I put names to my paintings and drawings. / Thanks for viewing my art!
A Cowboy friend of mine wanted this portrait…and myself being a Cowboy Junkie…I sure didn’t mind . / This drawing was drawn with a mixture of Pastel Pencils and Prismacolor Pencils, on card stock, acid free, low tooth, bonded artist drawing paper. Sprayed with a fixitive to prevent fading and ensure preservation. I have a private Fine Art and Photography Studio now at my home in Mesquite, Nevada.
Going back to Colorado for our daughter’s wedding, I had the opportunity to take some pictures of artwork I had done years ago. / My family and friends have these works hanging in their homes…some of my paintings I hadn’t seen in many years since we had sold our ranch and moved to the desert. / This painting was painted almost 25 years ago when I was just beginning my Romantic Western Art journey. / This piece is 24” X 28”, painted with oil on stretched artist canvas.
My first painting in over two years…my pastel drawings and photography became front and center as of late…I actually found my brushes had cob webs! / But true to form, I return to western art as it a subject that I feel comfortabe with and was a good way to help get me back in the groove. / This is a 24”X28” oil and acrylic painting. / Painted on Gallery Wrapped Linen Portrait Canvas / Thanks for viewing my art.
Went back to my two favorite subjects…horses and painting pretty ladies… / This is an oil and acrylic painting…I use the acrylic as an under-painting and put the details in with oil. / 20”X24” artist canvas board. / Thank you for viewing my art. / This original is for sale.
These two are our daughter’s dogs Kodi and Kyah…and this is a mild representation of their antics…Always into something or testing the limits of their world. / Hope for this to be a Christmas present…! / “The Girls” is an oil and acrylic painting on gallery wrapped portrait canvas. / 18”X24” / Thanks for viewing my work.
I seem to go back to the Native American in my artwork…I have some kind of affinity through the memories of growing up just outside the Rosebud Reservation in Valentine, Nebraska. My childhood visions are as strong today as they were when I would stand and witness the heart pounding, fast paced, emotional and colorful pow-wows. / The gathering of the tribes from the Nebraska/Dakota territory would come together…man, woman and child and a mystical energy would hold them for days …the energy had a far reaching effect…it touched a little girl standing on the outside watching, holding her Grandmother’s hand…. and it has lasted a life time. / This is an oil and acrylic painting, painted on gallery wrapped artist portrait canvas. / 16”X20” / Original is For Sale. Thank you for viewing my work.
Okay,Okay…I know I am on a Golden Retriever kick…but I just can’t seem to get past the soft faces and warm colors and maybe it is because I just saw Marley and Me! Cried like a baby I tell you…anyway, I did one like this many years ago for a client and just had to give it another try. / This is an oil and acrylic painting, painted on gallery wrapped artist portrait canvas. / 12”X 14” / This original is for sale. Thanks for viewing my work.
