Perched on the sea and nestled amongst the peaks of seven mountains, Bergen, Norway, is perhaps the most beautiful city in Scandinavia. Few would argue that the beating heart of this lovely metropolis is Bryggen (of UNESCO Heritage site-listed fame). Featuring a row of old wooden buildings with gorgeously sloped rooftops, Bryggen stands proudly at the base of Mount Fløyen on the eastside of Vågen, Bergen’s main harbor. The buildings opposite Bryggen on the westside of Vågen are often overlooked, and this photograph is an attempt to capture this forgotten side of the city. My personal assessment: it’s every bit as beautiful as the rest of Bergen.

A little experiment with lighting. This photograph was taken in the side isle of the gigantic collegiate church of St Waudru. Although located in the middle of the former county of Hainaut, the style in which it is built is one of the finest examples of Brabantine gothic. Eventhough its construction time was incredibly long (from 1450 untill 1686 CE, and it was in fact never finished), the style of the building is quite uniform. It is by many considered the most beautiful medieval buildings in Belgium. I disagree, but i think it’s definately impressive.

To many, the iconic, sloped rooftops of Bryggen set amongst the backdrop of Mount Fløyen constitute the beating heart of Bergen, Norway. Bryggen, the old medieval quarter, is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I loved this seaside town the minute i saw it. Historical folk have kept this part of the town as it looked hundreds of years ago.
