Hello Gang, This is Mark your moderator of the Graphic Arts group. This week I just would like to point out some interesting things that have popped up in the graphic arts pool. Like this very interesting journal entry, take a look at What do you love most about design? and leave your thoughts. Some interesting work this week in the GA Pool: / AKINOLAUDE by J Velasco – The variation of photos and vectors, with such a vibrant palette really works for me. Buzz .4 by Ben Vernel The interesting type treatment looks like a logo for some crazy future party. and this isn’t favoritism but I think you should also check out Birds on black again by Ben Vernel I just think this is a unique colour scheme and approach. GA | Interview The second of our GA interviews is with a young graphic design student from Melbourne – Ayarti Tell us a little bit about yourself and your artistic background? / I’m a 22 year old Melbournian. I study Communication Design at Swinburne. My third year of study (this year) has been spent working in the design studio “D.I.G Multimedia” as part of Swinburne’s “Industry Placement” program. So basically that involves me working 4 days a week full time in the studio, and studying part time 1 day a week for a year. It has been a fantastic experience. As for artistic background, I have always been into drawing and art in general since I was a kid. My love for graphic art started when I picked up Photoshop 5 back in year 8 and painted fire decals up the side of a car, and I have never really looked back! I studied ‘Visual Communication and Design’ and ‘Multimedia’ in my VCE, spent a year at TAFE doing Applied Design, and now I’m in my third year of uni. What is the inspiration behind your works? / There are a lot of things that influence the work I do, and the way I do it. Each piece tends to be unique in terms of its inspiration and influence. For example, the piece Follow My Ruin basically came about while I was experimenting with a new font that I had downloaded. At the time the media was flooded with news of war, so that some what influenced the direction the experiment took. The title was lifted from a song by “Royksopp” of the same name, and I felt it was quite appropriate. So some of my work is inspired by the world around me, where as other pieces like Splash come to life through experimentation with other artistic medias. This piece came from some ink experiments. What is your personal favourite of all your works on redbubble today and why, and if you will explain a little on how it was created? / I guess if I had to choose one it’d be Numbers 1 or 2 . I’m a sucker for yellow at the moment, I absolutely love using it in design because of its brightness and emotive qualities. The pieces were created as part of a typographic study at uni. I was researching typography whose function is to simply communicate and not necessarily look great, but picks up aesthetic beauty through aging and weathering. One of the areas I looked into was telegraph poles and the yellow metal plates that are nailed to them. I collaged and multiplied a bunch of photos to come up with the pieces, which were designed to be postcards. The process was pretty simple, but I think the effect works well and I love the contrast of the black against the yellow. Which other redbubble artist do you admire? / I’ve only really got to know clothing designers at this stage, as I haven’t spent much time in the art section of the site. I think sjem has some really creative ideas and the ability to pull them off beautifully. I really love illustrative works as well, especially for shirts, so I’ve come to love the work of people like tambatoys and brigid . I wish I could draw like them! If a famous person bought your art from redbubble who would you like it to be and where would you like them to display it? / Music is a big part of my life, so it’d be cool if a famous musician bought my work and wanted to use it for album art, merchandise art, or tour posters or something like that. That’d be sweet. Tell us what are you doing in your free time? / I don’t have a whole lot of free time these days. I guess when I have it I try and spend it with friends. I go to a lot of concerts, I play indoor soccer twice a week, and whenever I have an inspirational spurt I try and add to my redbubble folio. I’ve become very interesting in making things by hand this year, like books and boxes and stuff. I’m really enjoying experimenting with paper folding and binding and printing onto various materials. Hello Gang, This is Mark your moderator of the Graphic Arts group. This week sees us all probably realising how close christmas actually is and going through like crazy to find the ideal present, so this week Id like to present. The top 5 GA Pool Approved Christmas bubbles! (catches breath): / 1) Christmas Cubes by yanmos – Watch the spaces in between the cubes, and see the hidden dots! .. i love how a grid causes this weird effect .. and these colours are so cute! 2) Beks Deer by Grant Bissett Deers are Christmas right ?.. kinda ? sorta .. Meh, Deers are so hot right now.. 3) Abstract Christmas Ornaments by tdoes the colours are very festive, and the repeating pattern is very GA approved. 4) pollen by yuki nakano This one also makes me feel Christmasy , not in a traditional sense, but the colours and the vibrancy just make me feel happy and it kinda looks like my house Christmas morning when everyone’s going nuts opening presents. 5) or check out the traditional styled work from William Martin GA | Interview This weeks GA interview is young upcoming designer from Melbourne – Ben Vernel Tell us a little bit about yourself and your artistic background.? / I’m a young Melbourne lad who spends far too much time on the computer. I’ve been interested in design and art from a young age; my father has been an oil painter, freelance inllustrator, line artist for the Yellow Pages and a Photoshop teacher, so art has clearly been present and prominent in my life as a result of him. I have done a Certificate III in Interactive Multimedia, and have been creating works since mid-high school. I dabbled in photography but focused on design and fashion over the past year or so. I love vector art and I also love a complex hand drawn style I am hoping to develop. What is the inspiration behind your works? / It’s hard to pin down, but I’d say the content is nostalgic, reaching back into childhood memories for imagery like cassette tapes, paper aeroplanes and of course, retro video gaming. The style is decidedly contemporary, with a lot of vector art and interesting typography. What is your personal favourite of all your works on redbubble today and why, and if you will explain a little on how it was created? / I would have to say my t-shirt design Memories would be my favourite. I included the objects (joystick, viewfinder, rubik’s cube, and SNES gamepad) because I am a bit of a nerd and they’re a bit retro so they also remind me of when I was younger. The colours all work well together, especially on a green background, and I am pleased with the thick black outlines and composition of the objects. Which other redbubble artist do you admire? / I really love Lars’ work. She introduced me to redbubble, and still amazes me with the simple beauty of her hand drawn designs. I am also blown away by Laura and kookylane’s work. If a famous person bought your art from redbubble who would you like it to be and where would you like them to display it? / Um wow, maybe the singer from Klaxons could wear one of my t-shirts at a photoshoot! Tell us what are you doing in your free time? / Currently I’m on holidays from university so I’m kicking back and playing a lot of NES and Grand Theft Auto on PC, watching a heap of movies (last movie watched was The Darjeeling Limited. I’d give it 9/10), and a bit of tv (new series’ of Scrubs and The Mighty Boosh). Additional Info: I’ve been approached by a boutique store asking about a lookbook and pricelist recently and had no idea how to respond. I’m hoping to get these together, and possibly a portfolio as well so any tips from fellow designers would be welcome! Visit the redbubble portfolio of Ben Vernel | End Mail

(cross posted at blog.benvess.com) I’m at one of my postcard phases again. I had that phase for quite a while when I was living in New York. One of the main reasons that prompted me into the postcard phase was that they were everywhere in the City. At the end of the week (or weekend, even), I’d end up with some 200+ postcards (mostly advertisments) and nowhere to put them. So, I decided to put that into good use: write in them and send them off. Make the postcards appreciated across the nation, or even the globe. It was either that or stop collecting postcards and letting them pile up. For the most part, I would pick postcards that fits the person I’m writing to. Also, I always know this to be a fact, getting something besides bills and spam mail in your mailbox is always fun. It’s always like “Oh my God, going to the mailbox can be worth my while every now and then.” Netflix isn’t the only thing that excites me when I get to my mailbox, postcards do too. Now, I’m back into that phase largely due to the fact that I’m printing out postcards with my photography on them. Some of them looks good, others look horrible but all in all, I’m pleased with them. This brings me back to the same dilemma I had in New York: Either I have to stop letting the postcards pile up or start sending them out to people. In the past few weeks, I’ve been slowly gathering addresses (all over again, you people move around too much. Ha ha ha) and writing postcards to everyone who gave me their addresses. While doing that, I’m slowly finding a balance between manufactoring more postcards and writing them. In spite of trying to reach a middle ground, I still have a small pile of postcards. Then, I had an eureka moment. I decided to start my own postcard club. I have a small list of addresses written on my uselessly bad photos and anyone who gives me their postal address will get a postcard from me. Instead of limiting this to my small circle of friends, I wanted to open this up for anyone who wants to get a postcard from me every now and then. This is my invitation to you to join my postcard club. E-mail me ( me@benvess.com ) your postal address (please do not post your address on the comment boards, they will be promptly removed to ensure your privacy) and do expect a postcard from me. If you happen to be in Germany check out issue 18/08 of the sailing magazine / “Yacht” (you’d have to be quick though since the upcoming issue is just around the corner). There’s a series called “Das besondere Boot” (>>> “The special boat”) which is pretty popular in the magazine. / The current issue features a 5-page story with 8 of my photos. / The shooting which included sailing, portraits of the owner & boat details was / a lot of fun although it was bloody cold that day…:) / Here’s a teaser (© Yacht/Ben Scheurer) >>>

Here’s something I wanted to share with you guys…I did my first review / shooting for the “Yacht” magazine. I took a flight from Hamburg;Germany to Gothenburg, Sweden like a 1 1/2 months ago. Another one hour drive with a rented car to the swedish archipelago and off I went on a motorboat in order to do a shooting of a 50-foot boat (Najad 505) in action. The winds were pretty rough (wind force of 7) so it was a challenge to keep the equipment dry. / The shots came out really nice in the magazine… / There’s an announcement on the official “Yacht” website” >>> (©Yacht/B.Scheurer) / (©Yacht/B.Scheurer) / (©Yacht/B.Scheurer) /

  • Tropic Thunder Premiere Photos
    by berndt2

A mere two days after the Righteous Kill Premiere...

A mere two days after the Righteous Kill Premiere I had a chance at another one. This one was the Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jnr comedy ‘Tropic Thunder’. I think the people at work know that I take my job seriously, I just suspect they assume photography is my job and I do spreadsheeting and SAS programming on the side… I’d prefer not to comment! / Between them, Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Junior have exactly one (1) Academy Award and no (0) Grammy Award nominations, and no wins. No offence, but Robert De Niro can’t walk to the local shops without winning a primetime Emmy for it. / The camouflage-green carpet for the Tropic Thunder premiere. Cute! / Jack Black doing what Jack Black does. Except more weirdly / Still owes me $5…. / Ben Stiller.. nobody makes him bleed his own blood / Actually, it wasn’t the greatest song in the world. It was just a tribute. / “Magnum? Not only can’t I show it to you, I shouldn’t even be talking about it!” / That ringing sound you’re hearing isn’t merely David Duchovny in a panic, realising he’s been outdone in the “improbable hairstyle” game… but a whole bunch of engineers trying to figure out whether that construction is entirely stable. / ”...and could the guy commenting about my hair please take a look at the mirror?”. Harsh comment, Mr Downey Jnr. Needlessly harsh. / Oh, look….. it’s That Guy. / That can’t be That Guy because That Guy was over there wearing Prada sunglasses and a fake diamond stud earring… / Exceedingly thin, slightly jaundiced and wearing a searingly yellow dress. My camera’s autofocus seized up a little trying to find the contrast there. My main thought: eat a cough drop, lady- you need the calorie! / Not sure who she is, but she was looking right at me, obviously so mesmerised that she forgot that it was unlikely I was a celebrity like her. Given I was, you know, standing in The Crush with the rest of the dregs of society. / Oh, it’s… uh… ummm… I’m sorry, you were saying…? / Impossibly, even MORE pretty! / And finally…. I heard several people make disparaging comments about something being “definitely fake” but to be honest I simply can’t spot a non-genuine Fendi or Prada handbag at this distance….. That one was fun. Much better location, a more even balance of celebrities (male/female split), and without having to be contorted into a pretzel by the crowd. The next scheduled London Premiere is for ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’ next Wednesday. Will I make that one? We’ll see… Previous premieres: / Righteous Kill (De Niro, Pacino, 50 Cent) / RockNRolla (Madonna, Guy Ritchie, Thandie Newton) / The X-Files : I Want to Believe (Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, David Duchovny’s Hair) / The Dark Knight (Bale, Eckhard, Maggie Gyllenhall from a safe distance) / Wall-E (Sigourney Weaver, Ben Burtt, and a remote control Robot)

So here I am in this fishbowl… This is my first journal entry for RedBubble. Not too exciting so far. Baby steps; make good progress. Had a pretty productive day today. Juggling several projects at once. Got about a dozen drawings in various stages on my board at this moment. I’ll finish more than one of them tomorrow. Sold two drawings on ebay this week. Yay! Like I said, baby steps. Looking forward to meeting artists and people who love art. This should be fun! Cheers!

Movie premieres = good. World Premieres = even better, however as usual you can rely on some of the biggest stars giving these a miss (What, isn’t THE WORLD big enough?). Seriously, where was Robin Williams? / Yellow Cap Guy was in attendance, but I was disappointed to see him in a really bad crowd position. is The Legend waning? It was an elementary, almost rookie error to locate yourself on the concourse the limos have to travel past in order to discharge their occupants… / “Number of dollars I owe you? Yeah… I know… next time” Kind of incredibly, this is the third premiere I’ve photographed Ben Stiller at, the prior two being Tropic Thunder and Madagascar2 / You know you’ve made it in the world of Male Modelling when people are taking photos of THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD / Ricky Gervais, of The Office and Extras fame. Winner of tonight’s award for person who returned to the crowd most often to sign ‘just one more autograph’ (which is not to say that Ben Stiller or Hank Azaria spat on anyone or kicked babies, mind you…) / “Your name is ‘Bob’ and yet it has two silent W’s? How the hell is that even possible??” Either that, or Hank Azaria is just as confused about Robin Williams seemingly not being here as I was. / Gemma Atkinson does have some acting credits (and apparently has designs on a recording career) but it would be remiss of random strangers not to walk past and point out that she’s best known for modelling. In much the same way as I am… not. / Okay, I’m going out on a limb here and saying that either ONE or NEITHER of these two people is Robin Williams in disguise. (Seriously, why wouldn’t he attend a World Premiere? It makes no sense…) / I’m not sure. Wireimage fails to identify him, and the Paps snubbed him. Yet the fans were screaming for him and he was interviewed several times. Intriguing…. / Hank Azaria has had a fairly long and meritorious list of acting credits, often in smaller roles. For instance ‘Pretty Woman’ and 1998’s ‘Godzilla’. But his list of voice credits for The Simpsons bears mentioning : Bartender Moe Szyslak, Comic Book Guy, Carl Carlson, Cletus, Professor Frink, Dr. Nick Riviera, Lou, Snake, Kirk Van Houten, the Sea Captain, Superintendent Chalmers, Disco Stu, and Duffman. (“Duffman says… awesome”) / Ricky Gervais. Surprisingly likely to break into song at random moments, apparently. / Not Blue Steel, and the angle isn’t enough for Ferrari, so I’d say this is more of a softer form of La Tigra, if anything. Damnit, his range of expressions is so versatile! / “Director Shawn Levy? Producer Chris Columbus? Actress Amy Adams? Actor Owen Wilson? Yeah….. they were busy. Sorry bout that. What do you mean Robin Williams isn’t here? We were having a coffee at Starbucks this morning – you sure he’s not here? Blond guy, Asian-looking, wearing a green tuxedo?” Nope… / “Anyway, catch y’all later” A quick premiere is a good premiere, and this was pretty much both. There’s another premiere tomorrow, too. But it’s lower key (meaning : I’m less interested in seeing that movie than this one… but if nothing else turns out I might head on out for that!) The last couple of premieres: / State of Play – Mirren! Crowe! / Star Trek – JJ Abrams! Eric Bana! Sylar! / 17 Again – Zac Efron! Eeeee!! / The Boat that Rocked – McCartney! Halliwell!.. even some of the Cast showed up! / Fast and the Furious – Walker! Brewster! Rodriguez! Vin Diesel gives us a couple of minutes of his precious time! The Active of all previous premieres / Until next time!

GIVE ME YOUR MUSIC!!!! place your recomendations here please! :) To everybody who loves music. Wow, i think all my art is inspired by music in some way or another and i would say vice versa but i unfortuanatly don’t write music yet… / But for me music is everything, its the first thing i hear in the morning and the last thing i hear at night. it goes evrywhere with me and every part of my life i relate to music. I have theme tunes for lifes little moments and evry time that moment happens, the song plays in my head… / Songs are also reminders of people, books, emotions, places, smells, colours that i felt and saw at the time the song was playing. The feeling that then washes over me when i hear that song again is amazing and can take me back to that moment in vivid detail (even to days when i was 5 years old!) Indie, folk and slow rock is the best music for me though im not too genre specific, its the song for me, not the type. these are soem of the artists i love… / The Boy Least Likely To / Jack Johnson / We The Scientists / John Mayer / Corrine Bailey Rae / Lykke Li / Emiliana Torrini / Ingrid Michaelson / The Arctic Monkeys / Razorlight / The Kooks / Dashboard Confessional / Death Cab For Cutie / Tom Petty / Dido / Pogo / Bon Iver / Brett Dennon / Joe Purdey / Joshua Radin / Norah Jones / Sia / Jem / Ray Lamontange / Adele / Coldplay / Taken By Trees / The Dykeenies (thanks to Julia! ;) ) / Nouvelle Vague / Priscilla Ahn / Goldfrapp / Any French & Spanish Music Just to name a few… If you have a similar taste in music to me and you know any other artists you’de think id like, or even you really like (cos im open to anything) PLEASE say and share!!! Thanks!! Ok an update… haha! / Ben Harper / Architecture In Helsinki / Kate Havnevik / The Postal Service / Matthew Mayfield / Vega 4 / Florence & The Machine / Eddie Vedder / Feist / Landon Pigg / Jenn Grant / Incubus / Blue Foundation / Snow Patrol / The Beautiful Girls / Five Times August / Beirut / Moby / Live / Regina bloody Spektor!!!! she rocks my boat, her latest album is super good!!! Kokeshi (こけし, kokeshi?) are simply wooden (木, ki, ko?) or small (小, ko?) dolls (芥子, keshi) originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist. (Wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokeshi) / Ben My otomusuko (younger son) Ben who turns 13 in December, made this beautiful timber kokeshi doll for me during his Japanese Studies class… it remains unfinished in the raw timber state, and i really quite like it that way. I found this old tin and it fit her perfectly for a litte photo shoot this morning. / Ben’s Kokeshi with Sarah my choujo (eldest daughter) who is 17 now, in the insert wearing a beautiful kimono she was dressed up in by a shopkeeper in Japan, she has just come home from a 2 week stay in Japan with a host family Kokeshi were first produced by Kiji-shi (wood artisans) at the Shinchi Shuraku, near the Togatta Onsen, Zaō, Miyagi Prefecture5 from where kokeshi making techniques spread to other spa areas in the Tōhoku Region. It is said that these dolls were originally made during the middle of the Edo period (1600–1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs in the north-east of the country. A few of my own kokeshi designs below: / The woods used for kokeshi vary, with cherry used for its darkness and dogwood for its softer qualities. Itaya-kaede, a Japanese maple, is also used in the creation of both traditional and creative dolls. The wood is left outdoors to season for one to five years before it can be used.

Hi all, I know this is rather cheeky to ask people I don’t really know too well but here goes as it’s for a great cause! I hope people don’t mind me asking on here. Next year I will be doing a 26.5 mile hike ending with the climb of Ben Nevis for charity. There are two charities, TACC – Tartan Army Childrens Charity and Hopscotch . Details of each can be found at the links. I would be very greatful if you can find it in your heart to sponsor me as these kids from Scotland and South Africa really need our help. If you would like to sponsor me, you can do so at the following link: http://www.justgiving.com/tartanarmyness If you do, please leave me a message so I know who you are as I would like to thank you personally. So far I’ve been able to raise £45 so you can see I need as much help raising funds as possible for these kids! Details of the Ben Nevis Kilt Walk below: THE BEN NEVIS KILT WALK Who’s it for? 2 charities – 50% to the Tartan Army Children’s Charity to raise funds for AIDS orphans in South Africa & various projects for disadvantaged kids in Scotland (check out http://www.tartanarmychildrenscharity.org.uk/cms/index.php) & 50% to Hopscotch (http://www.hopscotch-charity.org/) that funds short breaks in the Highlands for disadvantaged kids who wouldn’t normally get a holiday. Where & when? Total distance = 26.5 miles / Total ascent = 8200 feet (3800 on West Highland Way plus 4400 feet up Ben Nevis) / Total time – Should take between 12 & 16 hours, including summiting Ben Nevis, rest stops and accounting for weather & different fitness levels. Start time = 2am (Yes 2 o’clock in the morning) to maximise daylight on the hill (sunset = between 5.30pm & 6pm) / Weather = Expect this to be very cold with probable strong winds & possible heavy rain, sleet, snow or hail. As a good part of the walk will be during the night, there will be pre-arranged rest-stops, partly to make sure nobody is struggling & everyone is accounted for. The first stretch of the walk (between Altnafeadh (Glen Coe) & Kinlochleven is 6 miles long & should take no more than 3 hours, starting with a steep walk up The Devils Staircase to summit marked by a cairn (pile of stones) before descending down to Kinlochleven . Once past the shoulder of the hill, in daylight, there are good views of Blackwater Reservoir. Approaching Kinlochleven, the way follows the pipes towards the back of an old Alcan works, crosses them turns right up the road over the River Leven, turns left and follows the military road alongside a housing scheme. At Morrison Crescent the way turns left down a riverside path and soon meets the B863. There you turn right to continue along the way. The next 13 miles starts with a steep zig-zag climb out of Kinlochleven. Then, after a hair pin bend, you emerge from the birchwood to a superb view of the Loch framed by mountains to the south. The way goes through Lairigmor (the great pass) with large hills on both sides. This section of the walk boasts 11 Munros (Mountains over 3000feet) & we should get some great dawn views. The long descent down the hills then enters the Nevis Forest. To keep to the way bear right through the woods then over a high stile and head toward Glen Nevis (2 miles along) until we see Ben Nevis to the north. Just under tree miles futher on look to your right and you will see Dun Deardail which has an Iron Age Fort. Shortly after the fort, you now descend into Glen Nevis down to a broad bending forest road. The way continues northward on the forest road, after about 700 yards the way turns sharp right steeply downhill, then it forks left past a small cemetery. We’ll then cross the bridge opposite the cemetery over the River Nevis to the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre. After a good rest & hot food, we’ll head up Ben Nevis itself (just over 6 miles to summit & back). The final mile into Fort William ends with a signpost marking the end of the West Highland Way at the Nevis Bridge.
