On Saturday, April 12, 2008 my band, Under Pressure will be playing at a benefit dance for a local man who has contracted a rare lung disease, and will likely not be able to return to work. Earlier in the day there will a Chinese auction and a silent auction. Both Darlene and myself have donated a print each of the organizer’s choosing. Here are the two images that they chose to put up for auction. / / /

  • Asleep while knitting. On this day, like all others in my neighbourhood, the homeless come out from the nighttime ‘shelters’ where they are safe from predators once the daylight arrives. Unfortunately, being afraid all night that some idiot is going to come beat you senseless for no reason other than the fact that you don’t have a home or might have a dollar makes it hard to sleep. So, being in the public parks and sleeping during the day is safer. Sometimes, someone falls asleep while doing something. This woman nodded off while knitting, something I’ve never seen before. And on this day, there was a fund raising walk for Alzheimer’s victims that made repeated loops around the park. People doing a good deed for a good cause walked by this woman as if she wasn’t there, not knowing if she had died or simply fallen asleep. All who saw her had the same look: walk by quickly, avert your eyes, and nobody will think you saw something you should care about and ignored it. As always, my photography of the homeless attempts to bring attention to their condition without identifying them individually unless they agree to be photographed. And, as always, I attempt to pay them for their image but only as long as they are awake and aware of their added risk: having money on them that can be taken by force. I wasn’t able to pay this woman for she wouldn’t even have known I did so and I wasn’t about to awaken her from her relatively safe sleep. I went close enough to see that she was indeed asleep and took my pictures while embarrassed walkers passed.

This is an article in progress about ‘how to be good at it’. ‘What do you mean?’ says your brain. Well, today’s topic is photoshop. (PS) If you’re going to use a PS feature, be good at it. Hmmm. ‘Is that a swipe? How do I know?’ Brain asks. ‘What is good?” Good question. Chances are, if you are new to it, you will use every filter available. Create every extreme possible. Solarize! Invert! Layers! Oh mi god-finally I can stretch out my body and be taller than everyone! Shazam! Not that anyone will notice. Ahem. Except the friends who know you. And people who’ve used photoshop for awhile. Now. That is not a swipe. That is just an awareness (though I’ve heard many express this opinion as a swipe): when peoplea re new to PS, they tend to over do it a bit. Now, having said that, I reckon (and I will say this a lot) that the only way to be good at it is to play. PLAY! have fun. Does it matter other people are more experienced? So your mum and dad learnt to walk before you-they didn’t mind teaching you. They loved it. They just got to practice earlier in history. Once you were up and running, you could do it better. For awhile. Then you learnt to pace yourself. And now you’re sitting in front of a computer. Probably just like them. It’s evolution. So anyways. Like the kid with a new toy, you love it more than anyone. Because it’s new to you. And they have played with it before. So they let you be. Every now and then, they get excited for you too, and say Yes! walk… (hang on, have I made this point?) Anyhow. You learn a lot from the balance of being left to have a go yourself, and been shown how. People walked around you, it was expected you’d learn to walk yourself eventually. Did the people around you say, step, step step. At the beginning, yes. At the beginning, hands were held, arms reached out. (then no one tells you how to walk-you just do it) Alright already with the metaphors! So what are the steps? Well. that above objective was clear. Stand, walk. Know which direction you wanted to take. Head towards it. Same with photoshop. To go from toddler, to proud walker, I advise the following- Ask yourself: what is the point? Do I want to make my 5yold look like a solarized tripper? What am I trying to say about this 5yo? Does he take drugs already? Do you see a future in it for them? Does he make me see the world differently? (of course! I get it now! It was my interpretation that let me down!) Do you want the image to be about colour and pattern etc. Question 2: am I doing this to make the photo look better-because it’s not very interesting now. Aha! if you answered yes-therein lies the problem. If you think the photo is a bit ordinary…chances are, a bit of wild funky will jazz it up! Hmm. Ok. Sure it will. Also, if you have to explain why (and I mean, there is a difference between subtle and self explanatory and just…) the message may not be clear. This is a big lesson to be learnt about making an image interesting. I learnt it from a photographer friend- there doesn’t need to be weird angles (and wild PS) to make an image interesting. It can be part of it. Remember not to RELY on it. An interesting photo tells a story, reveals something, shows emotion, colour, light, texture, life, joy, sadness, personal, external…unlimited things. It does. It’s true, what one person loves, another may be apathetic. As this experience if for you, expresses you, etc etc, remember, this ‘l-earn’ing is for you…so keep this is mind and as long as you’re satisfied, I will share this for your benefit. cheers / Sam

  • Pa`ako Beach / Paako Beach / Secret Beach / Secret Cove / Wedding Beach / Makena Cove near Alanui Road Makena Maui Hawaii There are many names to describe this beautiful secluded beach east of Makena on Alanui Road bordered by lava rocks and palm trees. The wave action is extraordinary and the golden sand is luxurious. There is a large tide pool on the right of the beach which is wonderful for swimming. A favourite among the locals and enjoyed by many families with children, scuba divers and snorkelers, there are wonderful views of Molokini and Kaho`olawe Island. This is one of the most popular beaches on Maui for small weddings.

  • This is long overdue. What I find particulary fascinating about them is that they seem to “happen” everywhere, whether it be Bucharest or London you’ll find some, and they wear the same frreaking clothes, same nike rings, same hoopy gold nightmares, they walk the same, talk the same, have lots of babies and always, but always hang around street corners, if they weren’t so agressive they should be in the tourist books. Moon chavs, chavs on the moon…

The War Child benefit book “You’re Not The Only One”, put together by Peach , is now out and features short stories from Twisted Tales Hosts DBA Lehane and Micky McGuinness. It costs £12.50: £5.00 goes to production costs (that Lulu take and pass on) ,Lulu.com takes £1.50 for themselves in fees (but I THINK they’re going to waive that), and the rest, £6 goes to Warchild. If you buy it as a download, £10 of the £12.50 goes to Warchild There are 106 contributors and I’m sure that more of them may well be Red Bubble members; as the book was fairly well plugged here. So if you are in let me know, and I’ll add you name to this post. As I ordered my copies two days ago, I don’t know what Darren’s contribution is like; but I’m sure it’s up to his usual standard. As for my contribution: it’s a bit different from the stuff I post up here; it’s got quite a lot of dialect in it and its very dialogue heavy. So if you hated Nailed then you probably won’t like this either! Regardless of whether you like either Darren’s or my work; the book and the project are well worth supporting. Cheers Micky
