  • Chinese & Amsterdam Storeys

“Good afternoon Gentlemen. Our delicious Chinese restaurant serves some of the greatest Chinese delicacies. Can I take your orders?” Jermaine takes charge as usual. “I imagine you can sir. Well my friend will have special fried rice and I will have special sweet n sour chicken. Could you make sure it’s especially sweet n sour though? Thanks sir.” People love to eat Chinese. More often the meals though…for the appetisers may prove too fattening over time. Neville and Jermaine have definitely had their share of fattening up over time. Neville is said to eat more Chinese than most Chinese and as for Jermaine, he probably eats more of most things than most people. “Jerry, don’t you think it’s strange how he mentioned they serve some of the greatest Chinese delicacies?” Jermaine who finds nothing short of highly unusual strange, makes a joke from anything less of great importance. “_Why_? What did you expect in a Chinese Restaurant, Indian food?” Neville who hears these jokes more often than not (but still not in appreciation of them) seems to always be misunderstood. “No, I mean, we’re not Chinese. I can’t see anyone in here that is Chinese…In fact I would say that the only Chinese this restaurant ever sees is on the plates. So, they could get away with telling us that this restaurant actually serves the greatest Chinese delicacies. Why would they not?” Jermaine’s opinion always went back to philosophy. “Some wise advice I have for you Nev. Never question the Chinese.” Something about the way the duo talked, it was utter enjoyment. The puns continuously employed emphasised it. A certain kind of pleasure whenever they accompanied one another was unleashed. “Oh Jerry, you got to hear about what happened to my cousin. _You’ll never believe it_…So Ben was in Amsterdam for some time, on holiday or something. Well on the last week he jumped off the top of a three-storey apartment balcony.” Jermaine who believes most things reasonable, but also hesitates in jumping to conclusions always feels obliged to question the situation. “Why the hell would anyone do something like that?” Neville started blushing. He was never as outgoing as Jermaine, even being questioned made him feel slightly insecure. “Well Jerry, you know my cousin Benjamin. No one questions him.” A certain kind of tension was building somewhere between Nevilles growing timidity and Jermaine’s pursuing nerves. “I think anyone thinking about jumping off the third storey of an apartment should be prepared to answer a lot of questions.” There was an uncomfortable short-lived silence between the duos. Neville thought of it as his responsibility to protect his cousin’s reputation, yet his loyalty had previously shown to lead to misdemeanours. Neville decided to break his loyalty for what his reason was telling him was sensibility. “Yeah Jermaine, agreed. Benjamin sure must be a moron hey. Oh, which reminds me, did I tell you he is going to become a lawyer?” The Chinese waiter had brought back the dishes. This is possibly the fastest time a waiter had brought out dishes (which were supposed to be quality cuisines). Then again, Jermaine and his friends always had their doubts about Chinese restaurants. Over their many meals they had discussed many things ranging from the health issues to the political and economic consequences of the different restaurant franchises. The Chinese waiter did not talk this time. He had a chilling frown cast upon his face. Perhaps he had heard their talking? Perhaps it was just the all-round atmosphere of working in such a demanding service. Jermaine and Neville dug into their meals, each choosing their pick of chop sticks and spoon respectively although ironically not in quite a disorderly manner. It was only lucky that Neville chose a spoon for the fried rice to prevent any more mess (if more mess were possible). “So Nev, back to the story; now that you tell me Mr. Benjamin wants to be a lawyer…that makes much more sense; their all lying bastards. This is one big story to you in order to gain your sympathy or something. It can’t really be explained, except that he is behind it all…” “Not true. I saw his bandages and cuts and sores; everything. That can’t really be faked.” “I’m sure for a lawyer, anything can be faked. Any kind of falsehood can be created and unleashed by those guys!” “No seriously. Okay here’s the story, he said he went to a party. He got pretty drunk knowing it was his last week. Who knows maybe he even did…goddamn man it’s Amsterdam! I don’t have to mention the possibilities, their limitless! Anything could have happened. Well anyway, he woke up and that is when the nurse told him what had been reported to her.” “You know what this sounds like? Chinese whispers. She said this; he said that, you say this…” Sceptical Jermaine could never let any possibility go. “Okay whatever, whatever.” Neville had enough. This sort-of-debate had turned into a sort-of-argument. It was time for him to try and change the mannerism of things “Hey Jerry, this kind of talking is probably not good for eating, let’s just eat okay. I mean just the other day I saw the scars and bleeding…well you know.” Eating continued. Polite (enough) slurping of Chinese tea and rice among other things died down the sound of thought. Than Jermaine continued speaking, but not where they left off. “Hey Nev, I’ll be back in a minute. Just have to convenience myself!” Neville sat there. Five minutes boring his intellect- no one to talk to! Jermaine returned. Back to his meal; back to messy eating and the hope of more polite interesting talk. Before Neville had seen it, Jermaine had finished the rest of his special sweet n sour. “Hey Neville, are you still feeling hungry at all?” Before Neville had a chance to reply Jermaine had beckoned the waiter over and ordered “Special Chinese fortune cookies”. The cookies came in no time at all again. It made it seem like there was surely something efficiently magical about this restaurant. “Hey Nev, can you tell me about this story a bit more. So would you get this, I actually heard about a story similar to his; actually two stories, exactly like his…they both sort of were like these crazy stories where these things happened to guys in…well Chinese restaurants actually!” Neville was only half listening, except the information was still unconsciously processing into his mind. He opened his fortune cookie. “No I do not believe it! Coincidences of such do not occur! Madness unleashed!” Neville started shaking intensely, trembling, his usual steady figure rumbling in what looked like fear; his skin pale and pupils dilating and goose bumps on his skin forming. Than he shoved his hands over his head and continued his fearful actions half-hidden by the table. Jermaine grabbed the little slice of Chinese paper, it must be not so fortunate whatever the fortune be he thought! “You will suffer falling three-storeys tonight. Do not question the Chinese” They both sat there; Jermaine seemingly doing and thinking nothing except watching the actions of Neville. Neville with his behaviour turning more and more intense and shocking as seconds progressed and turned into minutes. “Neville!” Neville took no notice, for a moment, to only a moment later reply, “What? Don’t you fucking get this? Can’t you see what’s happening?” Jermaine looked at his watch. Five minutes. Long enough…longer would be dangerous perhaps. “My good friend Neville. I have a confession. I put that note in your cracker…it’s to teach you a lesson really. But it’s also quite a cracker now too to think of it! You should have seen the look on your face! And my friend, I’ll tell you the moral of the story…Question anything with suspicion, even the Chinese, otherwise who knows what will be unleashed!”

Here are some of My Favourite Writers on Red Bubble / if you enjoy a hairy tale or two, an ale or three…..and working on anagrams…. you may well enjoy these authors! Also, you just might notice references to a few bubblers and their works if you read between the lines of the stories written by the 4 authors in the middle set of links.. The first author on the list, is my 11 year old son Ben…stay tuned, he hopes to churn out something new soon too. The boy seems to know enough about planets, alien life forms, war, prostitutes, transvestites and the soviet to get him through life already, i do not know from where he gets this crucible of information…but it’s just all there in his head for easy referencing…. he gets fed normal fodder…he watches tv like the rest of us….but he has the wildest imagination and deepest inner life of any child I’ve ever met :)))) The other two are slightly different again, but great reading…. Muscular Teeth and Matthew Dalton… I wanted to say, that writers on Red Bubble may not necessarily receive quite as much attention as visual artists, as it does take longer to read work, than to just look at an image….but these folks are all really worthwhile in my opinion :)) Ben Taylor iAN Derrick / Mark Bateman / Millicent Morrow / Jeannette Sheehy Muscular Teeth / Matthew Dalton

  • Tropic Thunder Premiere Photos
    by berndt2

A mere two days after the Righteous Kill Premiere...

A mere two days after the Righteous Kill Premiere I had a chance at another one. This one was the Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jnr comedy ‘Tropic Thunder’. I think the people at work know that I take my job seriously, I just suspect they assume photography is my job and I do spreadsheeting and SAS programming on the side… I’d prefer not to comment! / Between them, Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Junior have exactly one (1) Academy Award and no (0) Grammy Award nominations, and no wins. No offence, but Robert De Niro can’t walk to the local shops without winning a primetime Emmy for it. / The camouflage-green carpet for the Tropic Thunder premiere. Cute! / Jack Black doing what Jack Black does. Except more weirdly / Still owes me $5…. / Ben Stiller.. nobody makes him bleed his own blood / Actually, it wasn’t the greatest song in the world. It was just a tribute. / “Magnum? Not only can’t I show it to you, I shouldn’t even be talking about it!” / That ringing sound you’re hearing isn’t merely David Duchovny in a panic, realising he’s been outdone in the “improbable hairstyle” game… but a whole bunch of engineers trying to figure out whether that construction is entirely stable. / ”...and could the guy commenting about my hair please take a look at the mirror?”. Harsh comment, Mr Downey Jnr. Needlessly harsh. / Oh, look….. it’s That Guy. / That can’t be That Guy because That Guy was over there wearing Prada sunglasses and a fake diamond stud earring… / Exceedingly thin, slightly jaundiced and wearing a searingly yellow dress. My camera’s autofocus seized up a little trying to find the contrast there. My main thought: eat a cough drop, lady- you need the calorie! / Not sure who she is, but she was looking right at me, obviously so mesmerised that she forgot that it was unlikely I was a celebrity like her. Given I was, you know, standing in The Crush with the rest of the dregs of society. / Oh, it’s… uh… ummm… I’m sorry, you were saying…? / Impossibly, even MORE pretty! / And finally…. I heard several people make disparaging comments about something being “definitely fake” but to be honest I simply can’t spot a non-genuine Fendi or Prada handbag at this distance….. That one was fun. Much better location, a more even balance of celebrities (male/female split), and without having to be contorted into a pretzel by the crowd. The next scheduled London Premiere is for ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’ next Wednesday. Will I make that one? We’ll see… Previous premieres: / Righteous Kill (De Niro, Pacino, 50 Cent) / RockNRolla (Madonna, Guy Ritchie, Thandie Newton) / The X-Files : I Want to Believe (Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, David Duchovny’s Hair) / The Dark Knight (Bale, Eckhard, Maggie Gyllenhall from a safe distance) / Wall-E (Sigourney Weaver, Ben Burtt, and a remote control Robot)

Here’s something I wanted to share with you guys…I did my first review / shooting for the “Yacht” magazine. I took a flight from Hamburg;Germany to Gothenburg, Sweden like a 1 1/2 months ago. Another one hour drive with a rented car to the swedish archipelago and off I went on a motorboat in order to do a shooting of a 50-foot boat (Najad 505) in action. The winds were pretty rough (wind force of 7) so it was a challenge to keep the equipment dry. / The shots came out really nice in the magazine… / There’s an announcement on the official “Yacht” website” >>> (©Yacht/B.Scheurer) / (©Yacht/B.Scheurer) / (©Yacht/B.Scheurer) /

If you happen to be in Germany check out issue 18/08 of the sailing magazine / “Yacht” (you’d have to be quick though since the upcoming issue is just around the corner). There’s a series called “Das besondere Boot” (>>> “The special boat”) which is pretty popular in the magazine. / The current issue features a 5-page story with 8 of my photos. / The shooting which included sailing, portraits of the owner & boat details was / a lot of fun although it was bloody cold that day…:) / Here’s a teaser (© Yacht/Ben Scheurer) >>>

Hello Gang, This is Mark your moderator of the Graphic Arts group. This week sees us all probably realising how close christmas actually is and going through like crazy to find the ideal present, so this week Id like to present. The top 5 GA Pool Approved Christmas bubbles! (catches breath): / 1) Christmas Cubes by yanmos – Watch the spaces in between the cubes, and see the hidden dots! .. i love how a grid causes this weird effect .. and these colours are so cute! 2) Beks Deer by Grant Bissett Deers are Christmas right ?.. kinda ? sorta .. Meh, Deers are so hot right now.. 3) Abstract Christmas Ornaments by tdoes the colours are very festive, and the repeating pattern is very GA approved. 4) pollen by yuki nakano This one also makes me feel Christmasy , not in a traditional sense, but the colours and the vibrancy just make me feel happy and it kinda looks like my house Christmas morning when everyone’s going nuts opening presents. 5) or check out the traditional styled work from William Martin GA | Interview This weeks GA interview is young upcoming designer from Melbourne – Ben Vernel Tell us a little bit about yourself and your artistic background.? / I’m a young Melbourne lad who spends far too much time on the computer. I’ve been interested in design and art from a young age; my father has been an oil painter, freelance inllustrator, line artist for the Yellow Pages and a Photoshop teacher, so art has clearly been present and prominent in my life as a result of him. I have done a Certificate III in Interactive Multimedia, and have been creating works since mid-high school. I dabbled in photography but focused on design and fashion over the past year or so. I love vector art and I also love a complex hand drawn style I am hoping to develop. What is the inspiration behind your works? / It’s hard to pin down, but I’d say the content is nostalgic, reaching back into childhood memories for imagery like cassette tapes, paper aeroplanes and of course, retro video gaming. The style is decidedly contemporary, with a lot of vector art and interesting typography. What is your personal favourite of all your works on redbubble today and why, and if you will explain a little on how it was created? / I would have to say my t-shirt design Memories would be my favourite. I included the objects (joystick, viewfinder, rubik’s cube, and SNES gamepad) because I am a bit of a nerd and they’re a bit retro so they also remind me of when I was younger. The colours all work well together, especially on a green background, and I am pleased with the thick black outlines and composition of the objects. Which other redbubble artist do you admire? / I really love Lars’ work. She introduced me to redbubble, and still amazes me with the simple beauty of her hand drawn designs. I am also blown away by Laura and kookylane’s work. If a famous person bought your art from redbubble who would you like it to be and where would you like them to display it? / Um wow, maybe the singer from Klaxons could wear one of my t-shirts at a photoshoot! Tell us what are you doing in your free time? / Currently I’m on holidays from university so I’m kicking back and playing a lot of NES and Grand Theft Auto on PC, watching a heap of movies (last movie watched was The Darjeeling Limited. I’d give it 9/10), and a bit of tv (new series’ of Scrubs and The Mighty Boosh). Additional Info: I’ve been approached by a boutique store asking about a lookbook and pricelist recently and had no idea how to respond. I’m hoping to get these together, and possibly a portfolio as well so any tips from fellow designers would be welcome! Visit the redbubble portfolio of Ben Vernel | End Mail

Hello Gang, This is Mark your moderator of the Graphic Arts group. This week I just would like to point out some interesting things that have popped up in the graphic arts pool. Like this very interesting journal entry, take a look at What do you love most about design? and leave your thoughts. Some interesting work this week in the GA Pool: / AKINOLAUDE by J Velasco – The variation of photos and vectors, with such a vibrant palette really works for me. Buzz .4 by Ben Vernel The interesting type treatment looks like a logo for some crazy future party. and this isn’t favoritism but I think you should also check out Birds on black again by Ben Vernel I just think this is a unique colour scheme and approach. GA | Interview The second of our GA interviews is with a young graphic design student from Melbourne – Ayarti Tell us a little bit about yourself and your artistic background? / I’m a 22 year old Melbournian. I study Communication Design at Swinburne. My third year of study (this year) has been spent working in the design studio “D.I.G Multimedia” as part of Swinburne’s “Industry Placement” program. So basically that involves me working 4 days a week full time in the studio, and studying part time 1 day a week for a year. It has been a fantastic experience. As for artistic background, I have always been into drawing and art in general since I was a kid. My love for graphic art started when I picked up Photoshop 5 back in year 8 and painted fire decals up the side of a car, and I have never really looked back! I studied ‘Visual Communication and Design’ and ‘Multimedia’ in my VCE, spent a year at TAFE doing Applied Design, and now I’m in my third year of uni. What is the inspiration behind your works? / There are a lot of things that influence the work I do, and the way I do it. Each piece tends to be unique in terms of its inspiration and influence. For example, the piece Follow My Ruin basically came about while I was experimenting with a new font that I had downloaded. At the time the media was flooded with news of war, so that some what influenced the direction the experiment took. The title was lifted from a song by “Royksopp” of the same name, and I felt it was quite appropriate. So some of my work is inspired by the world around me, where as other pieces like Splash come to life through experimentation with other artistic medias. This piece came from some ink experiments. What is your personal favourite of all your works on redbubble today and why, and if you will explain a little on how it was created? / I guess if I had to choose one it’d be Numbers 1 or 2 . I’m a sucker for yellow at the moment, I absolutely love using it in design because of its brightness and emotive qualities. The pieces were created as part of a typographic study at uni. I was researching typography whose function is to simply communicate and not necessarily look great, but picks up aesthetic beauty through aging and weathering. One of the areas I looked into was telegraph poles and the yellow metal plates that are nailed to them. I collaged and multiplied a bunch of photos to come up with the pieces, which were designed to be postcards. The process was pretty simple, but I think the effect works well and I love the contrast of the black against the yellow. Which other redbubble artist do you admire? / I’ve only really got to know clothing designers at this stage, as I haven’t spent much time in the art section of the site. I think sjem has some really creative ideas and the ability to pull them off beautifully. I really love illustrative works as well, especially for shirts, so I’ve come to love the work of people like tambatoys and brigid . I wish I could draw like them! If a famous person bought your art from redbubble who would you like it to be and where would you like them to display it? / Music is a big part of my life, so it’d be cool if a famous musician bought my work and wanted to use it for album art, merchandise art, or tour posters or something like that. That’d be sweet. Tell us what are you doing in your free time? / I don’t have a whole lot of free time these days. I guess when I have it I try and spend it with friends. I go to a lot of concerts, I play indoor soccer twice a week, and whenever I have an inspirational spurt I try and add to my redbubble folio. I’ve become very interesting in making things by hand this year, like books and boxes and stuff. I’m really enjoying experimenting with paper folding and binding and printing onto various materials. (cross posted at blog.benvess.com) I’m at one of my postcard phases again. I had that phase for quite a while when I was living in New York. One of the main reasons that prompted me into the postcard phase was that they were everywhere in the City. At the end of the week (or weekend, even), I’d end up with some 200+ postcards (mostly advertisments) and nowhere to put them. So, I decided to put that into good use: write in them and send them off. Make the postcards appreciated across the nation, or even the globe. It was either that or stop collecting postcards and letting them pile up. For the most part, I would pick postcards that fits the person I’m writing to. Also, I always know this to be a fact, getting something besides bills and spam mail in your mailbox is always fun. It’s always like “Oh my God, going to the mailbox can be worth my while every now and then.” Netflix isn’t the only thing that excites me when I get to my mailbox, postcards do too. Now, I’m back into that phase largely due to the fact that I’m printing out postcards with my photography on them. Some of them looks good, others look horrible but all in all, I’m pleased with them. This brings me back to the same dilemma I had in New York: Either I have to stop letting the postcards pile up or start sending them out to people. In the past few weeks, I’ve been slowly gathering addresses (all over again, you people move around too much. Ha ha ha) and writing postcards to everyone who gave me their addresses. While doing that, I’m slowly finding a balance between manufactoring more postcards and writing them. In spite of trying to reach a middle ground, I still have a small pile of postcards. Then, I had an eureka moment. I decided to start my own postcard club. I have a small list of addresses written on my uselessly bad photos and anyone who gives me their postal address will get a postcard from me. Instead of limiting this to my small circle of friends, I wanted to open this up for anyone who wants to get a postcard from me every now and then. This is my invitation to you to join my postcard club. E-mail me ( me@benvess.com ) your postal address (please do not post your address on the comment boards, they will be promptly removed to ensure your privacy) and do expect a postcard from me.
