belly dancer in red tone, acrylic on canvas

  • This is a section of an illustration taken from a book I’m currently working on. Watercolour on paper. This book features anthropomorphic animals competing in a ballroom dance championship at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool. My elephants love to belly dance and are competing in the dance finals at their own free will. Taken out of context this illustration I may give the impression of performing elephants. For those of you who are concerned, I don’t condone the ill treatment of ANY animal and I’ve decided use this opportunity to bring awareness to the ill treatment of circus animals. There is a Tower Circus situated inside the same building as the Tower Ballroom however, animals haven’t been used in the Tower Circus for many years. Most animals used in the circus are meant to live in the wild. Instead, they are forced to live and travel in cramped quarters far smaller than their habitats in the wild. They are often forced to eat, sleep and even defecate in the same place. Elephants are kept with their feet chained down for long periods of time. Baby elephants are prematurely removed from their mothers for the purpose of early training. The combination of the above circumstances and other factors lead to mental distress in circus animals. Please don’t visit circuses that have animals.

  • I was a dancer
    by amarica

OK, I did it…I was a belly dancer for awhile. This was in the early 80’s. I had been in a car accident and went through a lot of health problems from one extreme to another. I had lost weight down to 89 pounds and then gained it back plus after getting well. I was living in Portland, Oregon at the time. I learned of a belly dance class where I could lose weight and get back into shape. I took the class and got really good at it plus got back into shape. Then, I decided I wanted a new look so I colored my hair dark which worked out fine since I had gotten out by the pool that summer and gotten a wonderful tan. I actually danced at a birthday party at Glenn Campbell’s parents house. He was flying in with Lindsay Wagner fo the party, but they got delayed and I never met either of them. The food was great and his parent were wonderful hosts. I really enjoyed the experience. I took this picture with a poloroid camera when I was showing my mom some of my dance moves. She worried about me for awhile because I was more colorful than she wanted me to be, but she loved me anyway. She shouldn’t have been surprised because she told me I was dancing from the time I could walk. I believe it because I loved to dance. All forms of dance fascinated me. My favorite music to Belly Dance to is an album done by Geroge Abdo called “The Art of Belly Dancing”. If you are interested, you can listen to samples of it and acquire a copy of it here / ____ Belly dance (Arabic: رقص شرقي‎) is a Western term for a traditional Arabic dance form. Some American devotees refer to it simply as “Middle Eastern Dance.” In the Arabic language it is known as raqs sharqi (رقص شرقي; literally “oriental dance”) or sometimes raqs baladi (رقص بلدي; literally “national” or “folk” dance). The term “raqs sharqi” may have originated in Egypt. In Greece and the Balkans, belly dance is called tsiftetelli (τσιφτετέλι), çiftetelli in Turkish. The term “belly dance” is a creation of Orientalism, first used in English in 1899, and translating in French to “danse du ventre.” Native to North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, belly dancing is based on one of the oldest social dances in world history. Support for this theory stems from similarities between poses from the modern dance form and those depicted in ancient Egyptian art. There are two forms of belly dancing. The first is called raqs baladi, a social dance performed for fun and celebration by men and women of all ages, usually during festive occasions such as weddings and other social gatherings. The second form, the more theatrical version and the one most popular in America today, is called raqs sharqi. Like raqs baladi, raqs sharqi is performed by both male and female dancers. In regions where belly dancing is native, boys and girls learn it informally from an early age by observing and imitating their elders during family/community celebrations and gatherings with friends.[citation needed] Today, these ancient dance forms are taught in classes throughout the world where skilled dancers/teachers share the knowledge that has been passed down to them. • Dark Desires
    by Cailean

Another night, while the day is mere remembrance of dark desires.

  • A dinner party out in the desert (oh the life I lead ay) where we were entertained by an incredibly talented Belly-dancer… usually I run a mile from things like this but she was very good. I cursed myself for not bringing my camera so borrowed a friend of mines and did the best I could. I had no tripod so had to balance the camera on the table and pray. I had taken a couple of shots with the flash that turned out ok but nothing special. I decided to try one without the flash and this is what came about. I was quite pleased with it to be honest

Digital Oil Portrait. This isn’t a photograph run through an art filter, but a digitally painted, layer by layer, portrait using TwistedBrush Pro Studio and a Wacom Graphics Tablet. The original photograph was cut the dancer off at the knees, so on top of making an oil painting using photographs as a reference, I had to expand the image, and paint both the legs, the stage and ‘finish’ the tapestry in the corner.
