This is an excerpt from a very old document that was unearthed sometime in the middle ages by a dutch monk. The original has been lost, unfortunately, but it is said that soon after discovering it, said monk left the cloister and joined with a band of reputed witches, living a nomadic life and eventually dying at a ruinously old age surrounded by a dozen young virgins. He was buried under a brothel, and to this day men finding themselves in room 8 swear they have felt a strange presence over their left shoulder and heard ghostly whispers of advice on attitude and technique…

Mr. Percussion Man
by Leoni Venter...Or would you steal a rhythm / From the ancient spirit of the air / And play it on the bongos / The steel drums / Or the lively tambourine?...
I wrote this poem for an amazing musician called Alasdair Malloy. I tried very hard to be the one to create a website for him, once upon a time. At least my nagging gave his management the idea to start a website for him, and you can find it here: http://www.alasdairmalloy.com/ Anyway, I have not seen Alasdair perform live, I only saw him on two of Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” concert dvds. And his obvious joy in performing was what inspired me to write this poem. The ‘glasses’ mentioned in the last verse refer to the fact that Alasdair is one of the few people in the world who can play a “glass harmonica” – a series of wine goblets filled with water to various levels and then each stroked into singing a certain note. It is quite astounding!

This is a work in progress. Any critique/criticism/advice/comments would be welcomed and appreciated. / There are two more parts to come… / Part 2 – Michael and / Part 3 – Belle / I’m hoping to get these finished soon. I’ve had this story bubbling about in my head for over a year. It’s changed so much from when I first had the idea. It’s morphed and grown and I think if I don’t get it all out soon it will get completely out of control. Lol / So here it is, part one…
