  • Stopped off here for lunch after snorkelling all morning, after lunch we went off to find to the manatee. Needless to say I really didn’t want to leave! St. George’s Caye is an island in the Caribbean Sea, eight miles east of Belize City. It is part of the Belize District of Belize, Central America. As of 2000 St. George’s Caye had a permanent population of about 20 people. St. George’s Caye was previously known by the Spaniards as “Cayo Cosina”, or “Kitchen Cay”. It was settled as a town in 1650, and was the largest settlement in what was then British Honduras in the 17th century and 18th century; however, its importance was eventually eclipsed by the growth of Belize City. From 3 September through 10 September 1798, British settlers fought and defeated a small Spanish fleet sent to drive them from the area; this battle is marked as a national holiday in Belize each September 10th as The Battle of St. George’s Caye picture taken with Pentax Optio S4i – no special features Jan 2007

  • Blue Morpho
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$28.50

I saw 4 blue morphos over two days while riding in the Mayan jungle in Belize. Their gorgeous blue wings caught the sunlight as the flitted very quickly through the trees. This one here was in an enclosure near where we stayed where they bred only indigenous butterflies. It is feeding on banana and sharing his food with many banana owl butterflies. / The Menelaus Blue Morpho (Morpho menelaus) is an iridescent tropical butterfly of Central and South America. It has a wing span of six inches (15 centimeters). The adult drinks juice from rotten fruit with its long proboscis, which is like a sucking tube. The adult males have brighter colours than the females. The larva eats plants at night. The larva is red-brown in colour with bright patches of lime-green or yellow. The larvae are also highly cannibalistic. (Wikipaedia)

  • Mayan Jaguar Vessel
    by Richard G Witham

    US$4.32–US$98.80

This small Jaguar vessel was probably used for burning copal incense during ceremonies or on a small home alter. It is between 1200 and 1400 years old (Give or take a hundred years or so). It’s actually a 3 legged vessel, but the angle of this photo only lets you see 2 of them.

  • Big Rock Waterfall
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$91.20

On this day we rode for 4 hours through the Mayan jungle in Belize, South America. In some cases our guide Rigo had to use his machete to cut a way through thick branches and vines which had grown across the paths . We were the first trip there for 3 months and the rains had created some difficult trails. We left our horses at the top trail and had to hike down about 200 ft to reach this waterfall where we stopped to have a swim followed by a picnic lunch. It was very hot and humid but the water was alpine cold. So refreshing. The tropical forests were vibrantly rich in brilliant shades of green . I saw two beautiful blue morpho butterflies, heard howler monkeys and came across jaguar tracks on the next 3 hours of trails back to our cabanas on the forest edge. The cabanas were lit only by kerosene lamps, so I was never sure which ‘creature’ lurked around!! More of that later. , .

  • The Jungle Trail
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Termite trails can be seen down the limestone rock from their ‘nest’ to the jungle floor. Rigo had to chop his way past this branch before we could get through properly. Sometimes he had to hack a way through when a tree had fallen completely across a route. These paths are cleared about twice a year for horse trails to Mayan ruins and caves – or waterfalls ! As he slashed I was waiting for his horse’s head to roll!! he was so near it at times.

  • Marijuana Valley
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$45.60

After several hours through the jungle we rode into this valley – Vega valley- where until 1994 the cartels had marijuana growing in secret. . Known as Belize Breeze – the government closed it down and planted palms and luscious vegetation – only our guide ‘knew’ where some was still growing, but wouldn’t tell!!

  • Mai Cave
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$45.60

After a 3 hr ride in the jungle we came to this limestone Mayan cave. This is one of the riding group repelling into this cave. I will upload another of inside this cave which was a dry cave – Two days before we canoed about half a mile into another cave with our headlamps attached !! very eerie . This cave had swallows and bats in the entrance and a few relics from the Mayan past. It had a most unusual floor of stone, shaped like waves of the sea for one section then damp earth from the dripping stalactites on another section. Picture it very dark!!

  • Glowing Red
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$91.20

I wish I could remember the name of this flower- it looks so ripe you would like to eat it !!! There were lots of them scattered about in groups near the cabanas in Belize. So bright – the humming birds fancied them too.

  • Howler Monkey
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$45.60

These howler monkeys could be heard calling through the night from the jungle in Belize. Our cabins were on the edge of the jungle and they would come quite near in many numbers . They gave a sort of hooping call that got louder and louder. I thought this one was going to pounce because he shrieked as he was leaping forward. I took it from a distance but the image has softened on cropping.
