Taken at the so-called ‘Belfast Wall’ (cf. Berlin Wall). I found Belfast an uneasy city, tied and unwilling to let go of past injustices. The words ‘new life’ painted on the wall sum up my hopes for the city and to me are a small ray of hope and optimism in a landscape of bleakness.

These windows belong to a building thats just over 100 years old. At one stage it housed Mothercare.
This is a statue on the Belfst Waterfront in Northern Ireland. The original shot was a bit dull so I figured I’d lose the saturation and impose an old photo feel to it, with grainyness and a relatively tight crop and shallow depth of field. The end result I feel brings about a sense of a tired, hard working labouring man, deep in thought on the cold Belfast waterfront from days gone by…... Not a particularly artistic photo, but is overflowing with irony. This is the ‘Peace Wall’ that divides extremist Protestant and Catholic neighbourhoods in Belfast. The fact that division is called peace, and that ‘peace’ is graffitied with a universal Christian message and symbol highlights the lunacy and hypocrisy of the violence.

This wonderfully shaped tree in Belvoir Forest, Belfast, looks beautiful in some autumn sunshine. This scene is from a path which runs under the branches of the tree. I was particularly drawn to the curved shape of the tree from this angle.
This tree in Belvoir Forest, Belfast, looks magical, late on an October evening. I love the tree from this angle, which shows off the wonderful texture of its old trunk as it stretches its branches over the low path below it. I was also quite pleased how the slightly unusual colours came out in this version.
Minnowburn Beeches in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on a sunny Hallowe’en morning in 2009. The stone bridge is behind the camera and out of view. Minnowburn is at its best just around this time of year as the trees turn vibrant red, orange and yellow hues. I was particularly drawn to the bright red foliage on that small tree near the water’s edge.
