  • The second in my fairytale series. This one has a contemporary theme. Here Hansel and Gretel are two rejected orphans of Belarus with birth defects, photographed by Robert Knoth and exhibited in the World Press Photos of 2006. “It is not known for certain whether exposure to radiation can be linked to such conditions, but the Belarus government estimates a 250 percent increase in birth defects after the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, just across the border in Ukraine.” I drew parallels with the Hansel & Gretel story and set out to include not only the elements of the dark shadowy forest but also the Chernobyl Plant Smoke stack in the background. Original Photographer won an Honorable Mention in the Portrait section of the 2006 World Press Photography Prize: Robert Knoth, The Netherlands, TCS/Castrasto for Greenpeace International. / ~ / More of my Works /
