I used the common colour pencils to depict having the courage to be different and break out. I used a very short depth of field on this shot to focus on the red pencil and bring a 3-D effect to the shot. I hold this shot very close to heart- the only shot I submitted to a competition and sailed through to the finals :). The theme was…’breakout’, of course!

“DARE TO BE DIFFERENT” makes the perfect gift for the independent individual in your life. Could that be you? The image features a photograph of a real White Raven (also known as a “Spirit Raven” by local Haida people) born in May, 2008 on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. He is one of two rare white and 3 black Ravens born to 2 accepting (black) parents. The two rare birds are not albino which is what makes them so unusual. Their eyes are quite blue. All 5 siblings are getting along extremely well and all are thriving. White Ravens are very rare and hold sacred meaning for many groups and cultures throughout the World, including Native American Indian, Celtic, Norse and Wiccans. This artwork is another tribute to these remarkably intelligent and friendly birds. 50% proceeds from all sales go to the Mountainaire Avian Society in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. This is from a songbird series I completed last year for a local gallery. There was a lot of news reports talking about the failing economy while I was working on the series, so I decided to name it, “Reasons to Be Cheerful” because I find such joy and comfort in the natural world. Thank you for all your kind remarks. I do think this is one of the best paintings I’ve done to date. (It’s all about the values, people!) They were out on the same walk She saw buildings / He saw the sky She saw shadows / He saw the shadows of birds that fly She saw a crack / He saw a crevice She saw a hole / He saw a ditch She saw the homeless / He saw the rich She saw a rock / He saw a diamond When they got home they looked into each other’s eyes, / How shall we ever agree on this life at the same time? / They said all at once / Well… / She said / We must learn to revel in our differences / Lets go against society, / Every time I see differently or you do / Lets break out the champagne and the sweet meats / Every time one sees a problem.. Lets celebrate for the other / Every time one sees a solutions lets do it again … / Celebrate / Celebrate each other.. And then we will loose track of / Perfect timing cause every moment will be just perfect!!
