Because of copyrights it is not possible to show an image with the use / deformation of the olympic rings in order to expose ideas about the Chinese politics. This limit however has helped to come up with this idea. July 13, 2001 when Beijing was selected for the 2008 Summer Olympics. People literally poured into the streets after this and it has been a countdown ever since. The Olympics will open 8/8/08 at 8 o’clock. 8 is a lucky number in China, associated with good fortune.

Where Are The Missing protesters? / With the Beijing Olympics on the horizon, more than 1,000 people who were detained in Tibet for protesting against the Chinese government three months ago remain unaccounted for, according to a report by Amnesty. All the protests around travelling the world with the olympic flame prove how serious concerned people are about censorship, politics and human rights as being practiced in China. Like in history France did to the USA i was thinking about the Statue of Liberty as a gift by athlets to the Tibetan people, taking both their opportunity to speak loud with all the media attention at this moment. Image by photographer Glennis Siverson, www.glennisphotos.com. This was captured at a park in Beijing, China, where an elderly man had just finished painting watermarks on the sidewalk. In China, there are many people who practice calligraphy in public places, using water as their ink and the ground as their paper. Very large brushes are required and they look a bit like a giant felt tip pen. (For perspective, the characters in this image are about a foot in length.) Although the writing is temporary since the water evaporates, it’s an informal public display of one’s work, and an opportunity to practice calligraphy, which is taught in the schools.

During the Beijing Olympic Games 2008, I was lucky enough to watch the games inside the famous Watercube (Beijing National Aquatics Center). It is designed a consortium made up of PTW Architects (my workplace), Arup international engineering group, CSCEC, and CCDI. This is a scene after the synchronised swimming finals on the 23rd of August 2008. Some of the visitors were trying to touch this giant bubble. Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace - and good wishes from China - to children all over the world. Being Australian, I know only too well what it’s like when a country oppresses a culture with one hand while celebrating it publicly with the other.

Crowd control Chinese style, just a short distance from the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing on the evening of the Opening Ceremony for the 29th Olympic Games. There were literally 1000s of military on every corner! It was a very humid evening and we felt very sorry for them all. They must have been baking in their uniforms!

This isn’t so much cool, atmospheric fog as it is extremely dense air pollution in the Chinese capital of Beijing. Just think : athletes will be running for 42km in the marathon through air of this quality if they don’t do something (like forbid anyone from driving a car or lighting a fire or burning coal for a couple of weeks during the Games)
