Olympus E510 / The Megachilidae are a cosmopolitan family of (mostly) solitary bees whose pollen-carrying structure (called a scopa) is restricted to the ventral surface of the abdomen (rather than mostly or exclusively on the hind legs as in other bee families). Megachilid genera are most commonly known as mason bees and leafcutter bees, reflecting the materials they build their nest cells from (soil or leaves, respectively); a few collect plant or animal hairs and fibers, and are called carder bees. All species feed on nectar and pollen, but a few are cleptoparasites (informally called “cuckoo bees”), feeding on pollen collected by other megachilid bees. Parasitic species do not possess a scopa. The brightly colored scopa leads to a colloquial name used occasionally in North America – “Jelly-belly bees.” Megachilid bees are among the world’s most efficient pollinators because of their energetic swimming-like motion in the reproductive structures of flowers, which moves pollen, as needed for pollination. Ironically, one of the reasons they are efficient pollinators is their frequency of visits to plants, but this is because they are extremely inefficient at gathering pollen; compared to all other bee families, megachilids require on average nearly ten times as many trips to flowers to gather sufficient resources to provision a single brood cell. / North America has many native megachilid species, but Alfalfa leafcutter bees (Megachile rotundata) are an imported species used for pollination. The most significant native species is Osmia lignaria (the “Orchard Mason Bee” or “Blue Orchard Bee”), which is sold commercially for use in orchard crop pollination, and which can be attracted to nest in wooden blocks with holes drilled in them (which are also sold commercially for this purpose). WILD & FREE / / We were really lucky to come across these “Little Bee Eaters” whilst on safari in Samburu National Park. As it started to rain, I thought to myself, “if he’s sticking around, then so am I.” As the rain drops started piling up on both of us, I managed to capture this pretty scene before the real deluge / began ! (Windsor, CT.)

Just a cute little bee.
Watercolor and pencil, original available. / This image is about entering the Faerie dimension and on another level, the soul’s journey. Soul knows no time, and thus, as in the realms of fairie, night and day occur simultaneously. The soul seeks unification with all that is, desiring above all else to return to the Source. I envision it as feminine nnd forever seeking blissful reunion with the Beloved and here, have personified Soul in the countenance of a young woman. Her neck is elongated, for bodily distortion is associated with shamanic journeying into other realms, humans in the fairie dimension, and a symptom of visions attained after consuming Amanita mushrooms in shamanic ritual. Above Soul’s head, as if guiding and protecting, two wrens (messengers of the goddess Rhiannon) display the triple spiral within a flaming sun disk. The spirit of the land appears as golden goddess within an unfurling blossom. Amanita mushrooms and a living tapestry of centuries -old mycelium, weaves the woman, web like, into to her surroundings. The mycelium, a metaphor for ancient wisdom teachings, interlaces fantastic totem animals with herbs, celestial symbols, and the cosmic egg of creation. Honeybees, metaphors of wisdom, and ladybugs, my personal symbol for guardians, flit across the image. The interweaving of these elements symbolizes the living, timeless organism that is earth. The animals in this painting are connected with the Goddess and some, like the salamander, have alchemical associations. The bee is a Druidic totem connected with wisdom. The Ladybug one of my personal totems for good fortune and blessings. I placed my Ladybug here as a wish for good fortune to whomever looks into this painting. The Cosmic Egg hangs at her throat chakra, wihtin it is the void. The leaves are those of the world tree, in which new souls roost waiting to be born into this earthly dimension (A widespread shamanic belief). About the Symbolism: The combined elements are symbolic of Wholeness, unification with all that is. Reverence for the land and all upon it is the first step in an evolving consciousness. Spending time in natural surroundings, and with animals and plants reconnects us to what is Real. An inverted interpretation might be: When we wander off the path chasing will ‘o the wisps, the forest is dark, threatening place. Shadow and thick foliage hide unseen threats, and the wide path gradually narrows to a winding deer trail until suddenly there’s nothing left to follow. We are lost. This is the time for stripping life to basics, keeping only what’s needed for survival. If feeling indecisive, unsettled, restless or frustrated, set down the unnecessary baggage. Look closely at friendships and allow the superfluous and damaging ones to lapse, or sever them completely. Keeping life clean and simple is a good way to start finding the way back. Look to the in – dwelling goddess, trust Soul’s nature. Look for the sun, and move toward the Light.
