This is .within minutes of Downtown Dryden..there is a path that follows around this marsh….with lots of nooks and crannies to explore… along with our resident 2 beavers..

This is a Canadian Beaver with a large chunk of water lily root in his mouth. The beavers here keep a hole in the ice open all winter, they pull these giant roots out of the mud from the bottom of the pond and eat them sitting on top of the ice… /

The American beaver is a true Canadian icon whose image even graces one of this country’s most well known coins. Inextricably woven to the early exploration and history of Canada, the beaver generates enormous interest among animal lovers and tourists. I was blessed in the summer of 2007, to have a family of beavers set up their home on Willow Creek where I live. Photographing them was not easy, since they are most active at night. But on this particular clear evening in the full glow of the moon, I was able to capture this image.

This was carved in 1987 by Nisga’a Artist Norman Tait along with his son Isaac,brother robert and nephew Ron.Telk ,this poledepicts how wthe tait family’s Eagle clan adopted the beaver as their crest and how the eagle and raven met and shared the sky. / Once five brother went to hunt beaver skins for feast. The youngest brother helped the young beavers escape and followed them to their lodge. He watched as they took off their beaver cloaks to reveal human forms and tell the death and destruction of their chief. He watched their song and dances then returned home to report what they had seen. The brother performed dances of the beaver people at a feast and raised a pole called Big Beaver. It was at this time that the eagle chief met and shared the skies with the Raven, which is another story.

The Crow is the symbol for the cycle called ‘The Falling Leaves Time’….a time when the Earth prepares for her season of sleep. In the winter I am able to get incredibly close to the Beavers in this marsh, who come out of the water through a hole in the ice, to eat the big roots from the water lily. They just sit there and watch you, and I can easily get within 4 feet of these guys, and for the most part they just ignore you !!

Beavers are most active at night, making it hard to get good pictures of them. On this night I was lucky. I set up my camera on a tripod beside the pond, and waited. I was worried that I would not have enough light, but there was a full moon, and as luck would have it, I managed to capture this wonderful image of an incredible animal. Shot taken near the mouth of Willow Creek, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

I love these guys in the winter, I can walk right up to them, and they barely bat an eye!! They don’t run away ?? In winter they keep a hole in the ice open, where they drag large chunks of water lily root onto the top of the ice to eat!! A real treat to see this !! /
