We feel very strongly about animal rights and the issue of fur and leather is no exception! Humans should wear their own skin – not the skins of animals. According to the HSUS website: / / “Each year over 50 million animals—including millions of dogs and cats—are killed for their fur worldwide. Although the fur industry does its best to keep the cruelty out of sight, suffering is a common ingredient in all methods of procuring fur, from fur factory farming to trapping. Many, perhaps more than half, of these animals are killed specifically for fur trim—it is not a by-product.” / / And it doesn’t end there. Top 10 Challenge Winner in Canadiana; featured in Canadiana, and featured in Americas~Rural, Urban, Wild, Free. Beavers are most active at night, making it hard to get good pictures of them. On this night I was lucky. I set up my camera on a tripod beside the pond, and waited. I was worried that I would not have enough light, but there was a full moon, and as luck would have it, I managed to capture this wonderful image of an incredible animal. The beaver is an iconic animal of Canada, and an important part of the early history of the country. This shot was taken near the mouth of Willow Creek, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada using a Nikon D2Xs with a Nikkor f4 200-400 mm lens mounted on a monopod.

“Marbled Sky“ I found this scene on the way home from a photo shoot with my sister, Manikah. We had visited Beaver Town to shoot the Arkansas Golden Gate Bridge. Beaver Town is a quaint nostalgic community just outside of Holiday Island, near Eureka Spring, Arkansas. Of course, on the way home we took every dirt road we could find! ...lol When we were crossing a low-water bridge, I happened to glance down I saw this “marbled sky”! My eyes are always searching for the art in nature :)

Settling Along The Buffalo Abraham Villines, and his children were among the earliest pioneer families in the Buffalo River valley. Abraham’s grandson William built this log house in 1850 for his new bride, Rebecca. Four years later their son James was born here. James Villines (1854-1948) was known as ” Beaver Jim” for his trapping abilities. After his marriage in 1880, he moved from this home to his own farmstead across the Buffalo River. In the mid-twentieth century, Villines family descendants used this house as a barn..with the chimney still attached. Today the notched, and hand- hewn logs recall the pioneers that carved their homes out of the Buffalo River wilderness. Ponca Arkansas, USA

Found this little place called Beaver Dam located in Cashe Valley, Utah. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L. [1]) is a highly branched, herbaceous, thistle-like annual, usually with many long sharp spines on the leaves. Plants are 30 to 150 cm tall with globular flower heads (capitula) and commonly, brilliant yellow, orange or red flowers which bloom in July. Each branch will usually have from one to five flower heads containing 15 to 20 seeds per head. Safflower has a strong taproot which enables it to thrive in dry climates, but the plant is very susceptible to frost injury from stem elongation to maturity. Uses / Traditionally, the crop was grown for its seeds, and used for colouring and flavouring foods, in medicines, and making red (carthamin) and yellow dyes, especially before cheaper aniline dyes became available.[2] For the last fifty years or so, the plant has been cultivated mainly for the vegetable oil extracted from its seeds. In April 2007 it was reported that genetically modified safflower has been bred to create insulin. / / Carthamus tinctoriusSafflower oil is flavorless and colorless, and nutritionally similar to sunflower oil. It is used mainly as a cooking oil, in salad dressing, and for the production of margarine. It may also be taken as a nutritional supplement. INCI nomenclature is Carthamus tinctorius. Safflower flowers are occasionally used in cooking as a cheaper substitute for saffron, and are thus sometimes referred to as “bastard saffron.” Safflower seed is also used quite commonly as an alternative to sunflower seed in birdfeeders, as squirrels do not like the taste of it. The pharmaceutical company SemBioSys Genetics is currently using transgenic safflower plants to produce human insulin as the global demand for the hormone grows. Safflower-derrived human insulin is currently in the PI/II trials on human test subjects. Phillip Stephan, SemBioSys Genetics Inc, product bulletin June 2008 [1] There are two types of safflower that produce different kinds of oil: one high in monounsaturated fatty acid (oleic acid) and the other high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (linoleic acid). Currently the predominant oil market is for the former, which is lower in saturates than olive oil, for example. Safflower oil is also used in painting in the place of linseed oil, particularly with white, as it does not have the yellow tint which linseed oil possesses. Lana is a strain of Safflower that grows in the southwestern United States, most notably Arizona and New Mexico. In colouring textiles, safflower’s dried flowers are used as a natural textile dye. Natural dyes derived from plants are not widely used in industry but it is getting more important world wide because of naturality and fashion trends. The colourful matter in safflower is benzoquinone-based Carthamin, so it is one of the quinone type natural dyes. It is a direct dye (CI Natural Red 26) and soluble. Yellow, mustard, khaki, olive green or even red colours can be obtained on textiles, but it is mostly used for yellow colours. All hydrophilic fibres (all natural fibres, such as cotton, wool, etc.) can be dyed with this plant since it can be classified as a direct dye. Polyamide can also be dyed without a mordant agent because of its wool-like chemical structure. Polyester, polyacrylnitryl and others which are hydrophobic synthetic fibres can be dyed only in the existence of a mordant.

A grimy Leyland Beaver of Dixon Bool unloads steel rod at a factory in Birmingham sometime in the 1960s when Britain still was a serious trading nation and made things rather than just consuming them. Lorry driving in those days was a man’s job, few lorries had heaters, let alone radios or sleeper cabs and many loads were merely manhandled on and off and the vehicles were expected to last at the very least ten years before having a second life with a smaller haulier until run into the ground. But it was a life of comparative freedom for the driver who was very much on his own once out on the road, no sat-nav, no tachograph,no mobile phone and much less traffic generally and a real camaraderie among his fellow sufferers. The original of this painting was in oils on a 20”x30” board. A painting like this of your favourite vehicle, British or American, in oils on canvas or board would cost about £1000.
