Sumatran tiger – original photograph, digitally accented. Captive animal. / / Name: Panthera tigris sumatrae (Sumatran Tiger) Description: The Sumatran tiger has the darkest coat of all tigers. Its broad, black stripes are closely spaced and often doubled. Unlike the Siberian tiger, it has striped forelegs. Sumatran tigers are the smallest tiger subspecies. Males average 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length from head to tail and weigh about 120 kilograms (264 pounds). Females measure approximately 2.2 meters (7 feet) in length and weigh about 90 kilograms (198 pounds). Distribution: The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in habitat that ranges from lowland forest to submontain and montain forest with some peat-moss forest. Biology: The Sumatran tiger eats wild pig, big deer (called rusa), and small deer (called muntjak or barking deer). The specific range size of this tiger is not know, however the population density is approximately 4–5 adult tigers/100 km 2 (39 mile 2) in optimal lowland rainforest. As elevation increases through submontain and montain forests, the number of tigers in any given area decreases because there is less prey available. Status in the wild: 400-500 wild Sumatran tigers were believed to exist in 1998, primarily in the island’s national park areas, but no island-wide census or monitoring system has been possible. Tiger numbers have continued to decline because of poaching of tigers to supply the illegal trade in tiger parts. The last remnants of lowland forest are being eliminated to establish oil palm plantations and for shifting agriculture by recent settlers from other areas of Sumatra and Indonesia. Ongoing road development makes many formerly inaccessible mountain areas accessible to illegal logging even on the steepest slopes, and many mountainous areas are being converted into plantations for coffee and other products for international markets. Tigers are legally protected but are not highly valued. Captive breeding: For three years, the Indonesian Zoological Parks’ Association (PKBSI) has been working with the Tiger Global Conservation Strategy to develop a conservation program for Sumatran tigers. In addition to the 65 Sumatran tigers living in Indonesian zoos, there are 55 tigers managed by North American zoos, 100 in European zoos, and 12 in Australasian zoos. This captive population is descended from 37 wild-caught founders. The Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Masterplan now has the potential to function as the heart of the Sumatran tiger population worldwide. It is designed to preserve sufficient genetic diversity to reinforce both captive and wild populations, thus fulfilling its goal to ensure that the in situ tiger program comprises verifiable founders permanently identified and registered in the Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Studbook. It also extends the capabilities of Indonesian zoo staff to professionally manage their tiger programs in Indonesia, and at the same time serves as a model for other range country tiger management programs in Southeast Asia.

Many Native American Medicine Society’s, in almost every tribe consisted of a society of women, or bringers of the rain that nurtures the abundance of their food sources. The Three Sisters ~ corn, beans and squash fed many tribal peoples as a regular staple when game, fish and other crops were not plentiful. The WhirlWind Buffalo Sisterhood began just before Miracle, the white buffalo calf was born in Wisconsin, on August 20, 1994. A rainbow culture promising peace among all nations and all people, stressing equality and opposing any superior race that controls or conquers other peoples. The Unity of all colors, all creeds, all beliefs, working together for the good of the whole and when all pathways to wholeness are respected by all cultures, the prophesy of the Whirling Rainbow will be completed. When the time of the White Buffalo, the third generation of White eyes children will grow their hair and speak of love as the healer of the Children of the Earth. These children will seek new ways of understanding themselves and others. They will wear feathers and beads and paint their faces. They will seek the Elders of the Red Race and drink of their wisdom. These white-eyes will be a sign that the ancestors are returning in white bodies, but they are red on the inside. They will learn to walk the Earth Mother in balance again and reform the ideas of the white chiefs. These children will be tested as they were when they were Red ancestors by unnatural substances, like firewater, to see if they can remain on the Sacred Path. After the time when the buffalo returned, the generation following the Flower Children would see the dawning of the Fifth World of Peace. Appearing to those who see, would be a Sun Dog, or full rainbow circle around the Sun that has bright white lights at the Four Directions, a rare natural phenomena. Enough of the Earth Children will be awakened to carry the responsibility of the teachings and the healing process will begin in full swing. Many will remember their “purpose” for being here on Earth and will develop their gifts to assist humanity. Truth will shatter the bonds of separation and goodness will prevail with tolerance, acceptance and understanding. The WhirlWind Buffalo Sisterhood has consistently sought knowledge that changes lies to truths, that have made us mistrust one another and replace the illusion of separation with the truth of UNITY. In non-violence and peaceful energetic, teach that a worthy opponent will present lessons to make us grow beyond any high drama and into a sense of unity within Self, to then share with others remembering that any challenges to unity are equal to our ability to overcome them. The buffalo symbolized not only the strength of the Whirlwind, but also prosperity and abundance ~ the past 15 years, since Miracles’ birth ~ the Tribe of All Nations has been gathering physically, mentally, emotionally, tribally, socially, morally and spiritually all over the world, even more so with cyber-space communications. I am still working on the other images in this series. I like challenging myself in new ways, with my self-portraits. And i thought it would be interesting to see if i could make it look like i was interacting with myself . . . in some way. I shot this series against a green screen. The background was taken from a photo-shoot i did at an industrial site in Seattle, Washington. The watchman was kind of enough to let me onto the grounds and gave me a tour and all access pass with my camera. I wanted to convey the extreme sadness i feel with manic depression. Over the years i have discovered that sadness is often anger, spread really thin, masquerading as melancholy. Anger is an emotion i have a very difficult time allowing myself to feel and express, i often repress it. As a child i was not allowed to express my feelings or my anger. There is a detachment that comes with sadness, a disconnect from the self, from the world . . . Acrylic on canvas. The moons are encircled by the symbol of Ishtar, represented in rainbow chakra points, including the eight chakra – white. The Goddess rising embraces the four directions, the four spiritual ways of my life. The owl of wisdom lies in the other four spiritual nodes. Encircled by the belt of Ishtar, lions rampant, lending courage, majesty, power and strength.
