I couldn’t sleep just now, and went back onto RB, and was surprised to see a sale. Thank you Mar Sillva for buying a card of Naoshima’s Painted Sky Naoshima is quite different from the Yosemite which Mar so often hikes and beautifully photographs, but I find that her love for Yosemite is much like my love for Japan. Though we traveled to different places, I think we’ve shared a similar feeling. This photo of hers especially reminded me of that feeling where she was trying to become “One with” the place she love so much: Cheers to you too Mar, thank you and hope you will enjoy the Naoshima sky as much as I did. It’s kind of funny this happened; I was thinking of Japan a while ago; how I wish I was there now… I will be having some good dreams tonight…

  • Painting beautiful skies

When doing oil paintings of landscapes, the way that the sky is painted can set the mood for the entire picture. / A dark sky is often associated with late in the afternoon, a light blue sky with the brightness of the middle of the day and a purple sky with approaching sunset. / A common mistake with novice artists is to use too few color for their skies. A mixture of dark blues, light blues and plenty of white makes for a far more interesting looking sky. There are various techniques that can be implemented. Brushing on a good thick coat of oil paint, with light blue on one area and different shades in other areas then using a 1” wide brush to pull colors from one area to the other in quick left to right strokes can be very effective. Another technique is to use plenty of thinners, a mix of 50/50 linseed oil and artists turpentine is good. Cover you entire sky area with very thin paint and then use your fingers with the white and various shades of blue to construct your clouds. / If there is going to be any water in your painting ie: rivers, dams lakes etc, then make sure you use the sky paint to roughly paint in your water areas for good color symmetry. Painting beautiful skies helps keep up the motivation to paint a beautiful picture. Some artists spend a lot of time painting the clouds into various shapes to depict other objects and add symbolism to their works. / Using palette knife for skies can be effective, but does require a lot more paint to be used. Interesting clouds can also be created with the palette knife. / Unless you are painting a seascape, where it is imperative that the horizon is dead straight, it is usually not critical to have your skyline dead straight. Most often in landscapes you are going to have mountains or hills are other varying landscape components directly in front of your sky which will be at various angles that hide the straight line of the horizon. / It is a good idea to mix your sky colors with yellow to create the greens for your painting, as well as using premixed greens such as sap green, viridian etc. This helps add color uniformity to your painting. The same goes for your mountains, mix reds with your sky blues to give you various shades of purple for your mountains. Even the rich dark undiluted blues can be used for mountain peaks. / Try to avoid painting a sun directly. If you want a sun then have it behind clouds with the bright sunrays in whites and yellows showing through. Use thick brush strokes for this. It may be best to let the blue of the sky dry before painting the whites and yellows for the sun beams over the top, to avoid them mixing with the blue and ending up with a green tinge. / If you are painting the sky at sunset, then a huge range of colors from red, to yellow, to purple as well as blues can be used. Again if there is going to be water in your picture it is a good idea to paint the water at the same time as the sky to get the consistency of colors and then paint the landscape components afterwards. / Debra Lohrere is an artist and author http://investmentpropertybooks.com/artwork.html

Looking up toward the sea in the sky, in the white blue haze of a dream, everything drifts. For a long while I stare up into its great white eye and just think about it, thinking it into inconsequence. I think of all the cumulous clouds, the stratus and the cirrus formations at work; I think of the water cycle and of condensing moisture falling and draining. I think of the gases like oxygen and nitrogen and carbon dioxide falling on top of each other in layers according to density; I think of this stratosphere suppressed under all the other layers of atmosphere piling on top of one another, climbing up into deep space as the energy keeps getting used and used just for upkeep. Mostly, I try very hard to think about these things in terms of their unimportance. Back to the truth that it doesn’t matter if I know its name, know the methodology, or the experiment conducted that discovered it – the science of its composition. After all these things, what everyone knows is that it comprises something of beauty – some sort of beauty. Even if it’s a polluted, toxic, noxious sky, what it is is more than science or a new article covering ten inches of the front page newspaper. Higher up than the elite, more important than research, this beautiful something is experiential and intellectual. It is both, because nature is both, creativity is both, and pleasure and pain is both. Given the science of beauty, it is challenging enough as it is, and in many ways my job as an intellectual, as a scientist, or even as a psuedo-intellectual, is done from there.

Mahalo a nui loa to the hosts for featuring my image in The True Beauty Group This beautiful mele is one of my favourites and I love the gentle power of his angelic voice!! It is the beautiful Maunaleo Mele Keali’i composed for his beloved Mother, Lei, and the one I included on my signature image I created with deepest respect and appreciation for Keali’i Reichel From my collection: Darkly, deeply, beautifully blue! Maunaleo ~ Journey With Spirit This is one of my signature pieces, a composite of seven of my images blended into one using photographs I have taken on the lava seacliffs of Wa’ianapanapa Maui Hawai’i layered with a full moon in Fairbanks Alaska. Maunaleo ~ Journey With Spirit is dedicated with deepest respect and appreciation for Keali’i Reichel. Carleton Lewis Keali’inaniaimokuokalani Reichel (born 1962) popularly known as Keali’i Reichel, is a popular and bestselling singer, songwriter, choreographer, dancer, chanter, scholar, teacher, and personality from the State of Hawai’i. He has spent his life educating the world about Hawaiian culture through music and dance. Maunaleo is one of his most beautiful songs and one of my favourites! / Lyrics Source: Keali`i Reichel album “Melelana” Copyright 1999 Punahele, Inc. – “Composed for Keali`i’s mother Lei, she is compared to the majestic sentinel mountain, Maunaleo, who guards, comforts, nourishes and loves her people. A finely woven cloak for the highlands. / A cherished one, respected for power and strength. / Esteemed, treasured, touched by heaven. / Capped by the silver of the rolling mists. / An adornment for that gentle heart. / Embraced by the surrounding ridges. / One to hold close, to hold near, to love. / One dear to the heart, precious, exalted. / This is my garland of affection for Maunaleo in its beauty. / Glorified by the Mälie breeze. / A cherished one, respected for power and strength. / Esteemed, treasured, touched by heaven. / For Maunaleo is the serenity of deep love. / Beloved are you, beloved indeed.” .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA1xzuP0nkI / Maunaleo by Keali’i Reichel
