Pride exemplified via Mramba, the male African lion at the Virginia Zoo. The future of African predators is in peril. It is estimated that only 10,000-15,000 free-roaming African lions remain, down from 50,000 a decade ago. African lions are now listed as Endangered (West African subspecies) and Vulnerable (East and Southern African subspecies) by the World Conservation Union and are on Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) list. African lions are in danger of disappearing altogether due to disease (FIV, bovine tuberculosis, canine distemper) and habitat encroachment. Today’s modern world subjects lions and other wildlife to many dangers. Mankind constantly seizes more and more of the remaining wild areas of Africa, forcing lions onto smaller and smaller parcels of land. Large-scale developments destroy the lion’s natural habitat. In areas inhabited by livestock, lions are frequently shot, snared or poisoned. And sadly, the hunting of these amazing animals for “sport,” for man’s pleasure, is still encouraged as a revenue producing industry by many African governments. African predators simply will not survive unless they are protected. 100% of proceeds from any sales of this image will be donated to the Virginia Zoo

My new wolf friend seemed to like having his pictures taken – he stared “up close and personal” right into the lens. The doe took a little time off from busy eating for the photo opportunity, although she didn’t want to give up the tasty colorful leaf. By now everyone who has ever seen my work knows that I’m absolutely “addicted” to develop a deep relationship and establish an intimate communication with mule deer (we don’t have a lot of white-tailed deer around here). My dog River posing for a portrait in the snow. She has ALWAYS liked her picture being taken since she barely opened her eyes at two weeks of age. Her litter mates ran around when the camera aimed at them but she stood in attention every time a photo opportunity showed up! :) I’m sure she’d be glad that I donate the proceed of the sale of her photos to Nature Canada as she loves woods and her deer friends as much as I do! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada.

This is a captive animal that resides at the Living Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona. Cougar, one of the most maligned carnivores in North America. Like the grizzly bear and timberwolf, these large carnivores need lots of space to live, and when they go after livestock it is because they either are sick and malnourished from overpopulation as a result of human habitat destruction, or from a lack of natural prey also a direct result of human encroachment upon their native habitat. A big cat is going to do what evolution created a big cat to do and that is hunt and kill. As they say in sports, don’t hate the player (i.e. cougar), hate the game (i.e. habitat destruction)! /

This is a little bridge in my piece of the woods after the first snow. All is calm and quiet. Even the deer seemed to be walking gingerly – not wanting to disturbed the “peace”. Some may even say that the picture portrays a feeling of “eerie-ness” but for me, it’s just the quietness and serenity. I apologise for the stupid title but couldn’t think of any better description. Tigers are one of my favourite animals and they always amaze me whenever I get a chance to see them. This photo was taken through thick glass but the Tiger still managed to send chills down my spine. Just seconds after this photo was taken I was looking into its eyes and we were both fixated on each other. He then got up and showed his teeth and came closer to the window, it gave me quite a fright! I also learnt during this visit that the Sumatran Tiger is critically endangered, Indonesia has 65 captive Sumatran tigers living in zoos, 85 in European zoos and 20 in Australian zoos. There are 70 tigers managed by North American zoos of which the Honolulu Zoo has three. The entire captive population is descended from 37 wild-caught founders. Taken at the Melbourne Zoo in Parkville, Melbourne, Australia with my Canon 300D and a Canon 75-300mm lens. I added a bit of contrast and clarity as I was getting really flat colours shooting through the glass, it was also a very overcast winter’s day. Also converted to HDR in Photomatix to bring out more detail and also fixed up some of the background in Photoshop. The image as a medium sized mounted print with a black border and artist’s details:

My new wolf friend was determined to teach me how to howl after our shared lunch. He very “tenderly” took half of my sandwich from my offering hand with his mouth, lay it down on the ground and ate it layer by layer, slowly and savoringly, unlike my dog River, who would ALWAYS “wolf down” whatever is offered to her! :) So now he set out, just a few feet away, raised one front leg a tiny bit for emphasis and howled. I got down on all fours, copied the posture and did the same. Obviously he was a little dissatisfied with my learning so he repeated the whole thing another time.
