This intimate, bright yet dark, static yet flowing, autumn themed image was made in Baxter State Park, Maine, USA in October 2006. I like the contrast of the flowing water beneath the still branches, the pop of color from the remaining birch leaves, and the juxtaposition of the branch atop the stream in tone and color! /

Pearls represent the tears of the moon and remind us that life may not be easy and we all struggle. The lotus represents strength through love. The daisies are for simplicity. The bindi is for spiritual insight. The red sky at night is a sailor’s delight…for a red sky at night indicates smooth seas on the morrow! As a fisherman’s daughter, I have witnessed the strange phenomena of a red sky numerous times….always turns out to be calm on the water next day – a great indicator.. red skies are a great indicator of smooth sailing ahead

The bridge reminds me of an emotion of solitude, which is not to be confused with loneliness. The former leads to an internal peace and being one with nature and oneself while the latter was a feeling of being forced to be alone, deprived of freedom and choice. I used to call this photo “Peaceful Bridge” until a young patient of mine (at the time she was nine years old) explored the difference between solitude and loneliness. When the image was presented to him as an illustration, he exclaimed, “Oh, solitude is peace, inner peace!” And the true title of the piece was born. Based on the following lines from a poem I wrote: / “For through the stillness of forest trees… floats to earth the remnants of angels’ wings”. The feather is a painting (deliberately made to look torn), the rest was created in Photoshop. /

The doe took a little time off from busy eating for the photo opportunity, although she didn’t want to give up the tasty colorful leaf. By now everyone who has ever seen my work knows that I’m absolutely “addicted” to develop a deep relationship and establish an intimate communication with mule deer (we don’t have a lot of white-tailed deer around here). When I was a wee lad, one of my favorite motion picture shows was ‘Born Free’, and it was always amazing to me in that movie the bond forged between human and animal. As I grew older and more advanced in my studies of carnivore ecology it began to make even more sense to me, and yet it is such a torment and a catch-22 to be both a biologist and a wildlife photographer. The scientist in me knows that there are only a few zoos that do good work for conservation even if this should be the reason for any zoo to exist today. Yet the photographer in me can not pass up an opportunity to photogaph such amazing creatures even if in a captive situation. Happy and sad at the same time, yin and yang of life, as perhaps it is with all things!

My dog River posing for a portrait in the snow. She has ALWAYS liked her picture being taken since she barely opened her eyes at two weeks of age. Her litter mates ran around when the camera aimed at them but she stood in attention every time a photo opportunity showed up! :) I’m sure she’d be glad that I donate the proceed of the sale of her photos to Nature Canada as she loves woods and her deer friends as much as I do! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada.
