  • It was a freezing crisp day, -27 in Park Voyageur. This is the little footbridge that leads to the frozen lake. There was not a soul out there in this cold, not even the birds or deer or squirrels, just River and me, the “die-hards”. :)

  • The middle-aged buck came right out in front the camera as if to say “Hey, remember me?!” :) Nobody could forget him (not River or me) because he met with us everyday from last spring to fall! And we both love him! :) Everyday we managed to get to the woods to meet with him, our day seemed “right” and “whole” because of it. He made us happy and encountering, watching and playing with him IS, true to the meaning of the word, our (my dog River’s and mine) passion! For the remembrance of this magnificent buck, I shall donate this piece of work to charity for his, and the well being of all the living in the forest! Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada

  • All the other ducks (there must be more than 100 of them) were watching this one beautiful male duck perform what I’d like to call “daytime ballet”, in the freezing winter (River wore her thick coat and she was trembling standing in the deep snow) and none of them seemed to be the least bit disturbed by the weather. / Ted made a comment the other day on another duck photo (taken the same day) that it didn’t seem to be very cold to him – perhaps he, too, like the ducks, was deceived by the brilliant light and the hint of shiny sky but I kid you not, it was -37˚c! :)

  • The sisters knew they are beautiful so they posed for the camera for a long time until I got it “right”. :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Algonquin Park

  • My new friend posed and wanted me to get his face “right”, although I am still not sure that I did. I tried though. Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Algonquin Park

Aloha e Malama pono Sharon Mau SOLD / 01 June 2009 / 1x Poster Pa’ako Beach Makena Maui Hawai’i No post processing, it is really this beautiful! / Early morning light on Pa’ako Beach, Maui Hawai’i. / The island of Lana’i is visible on the distant horizon and Oneloa (Big Beach), Makena is in the distance on the right. The division between Big Beach and Little Beach was caused by a lava flow and earthquake in approximately 1790. The hill dividing the beaches is called Pu’u Ola’i or Earthquake Hill. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Currently with 3026+ Views, _Mahalo :))) “At the northernmost corner of the Polynesian triangle, the Hawaiian Islands stand as a sentry for a collection of atolls, volcanic remnants, coral blocks and large islands that punctuate the region stretching to Aotearoa (New Zealand) in the south and Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the east. Hawai’i is the newest landmass in Polynesia and the most isolated settled area on the globe, rife with unique ecosystems. Maui, sitting in the middle of the main Hawaiian island chain, is young geologically. Haleakala, still volcanically active in the 18th century and now considered dormant, rises 10,023 feet. The older and more eroded West Maui Mountains are 1.3 million years old. The tallest point at Pu’u Kukui – 5,788 feet – is one of the rainiest spots on earth. Ka’anapali is on the leeward side of these mountains of West Maui on the slopes facing the islands of Lana’i, visible on the horizon in this image and the beautiful island of Moloka’i.” Information Source Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Shooting Date 30 September 2009 / This is a composite of two images taken on the same location at the same time stitched one over the other / Currently with 3010+ Views

  • Third Place Winner in the COUNTRY ROADS around the world Challenge What’s On YOUR Road? / A word of advice for everyone. Once the work is submitted to a challenge, don’t make any changes. I edited my original image and it disappeared from the challenge results. From my collection: / Emerquinox ~ The Spirit of Alaska ~ Alaska North Star Winter Scenics SOLD / 1x Matted Print A beautiful cow Moose and her yearling Calf browsing near North Pole Alaska ~ Winter Scenics Emerquinox is a word I coined when I combined the words Emerge and Equinox. This magnificent Cow Moose and her young calf were photographed with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi near North Pole Alaska. North Pole Alaska is about a twenty minute drive from Fairbanks Alaska on Badger Road. Did you know more than one Moose is still Moose? Many Moose, or two Moose, or one Moose, it is always Moose. Just thought you would want to know that. :) I have many more images of this beautiful Cow Moose and her yearling calf as they permitted me to watch and photograph them for over an hour! I have over 100 shots of them. Of course I wouldn’t wish to post them all, but I will upload a few more if you would like to see them! Thank you so much to the Hosts and to everyone for your kind notes and for voting for my image in the Country Roads Around the World challenge What’s on YOUR Road? My image won Third Place! Thank you so much!! Many of my viewers seem to perceive I am standing on the ground within arms length of this 1200+ lb Moose!! I wish for everyone to know and understand that I remained in my truck watching her with her adorable calf for well over an hour. And while she did approach me as I remained in my truck watching her, (with my engine idling and heater blowing as the temps were subzero!) once she decided I was no threat to her, she seemed as curious about me as I was about her and her darling calf! The Cows are very protective of their young, and the Bulls are aggressive and unpredictable as well. And I would advise everyone to never approach a Moose. She is a ‘resident’ Moose, and she and her calf live in the deep forest surrounding my home in the wilderness when I lived in Alaska near North Pole. She is wild, and certainly not tame, as someone asked. A Cow Moose will kill you if you come between her and her calves. Cows are generally not hunted, and she is simply accustomed to being around humans since she is one of several generations of Moose born in this area. With an abundance of Diamond Willow (their favourite) and other tender shoots along the roadways, and the remnants of summer gardens, they simply brush off the snow with their noses and browse. She has no need to migrate. There are many many more in this area. They are elusive however, and nocturnal for the most part, so it is always a thrill to see one! It is only in winter when one sees them struggling to survive the deep winter browsing during the “daylight” hours. And then too, in winter it is dark for so many hours so the night is extended! Most people think of Alaska as The Land of the Midnight Sun. That is true only for a short time in a very brief summer. In winter Alaska is The Land of Perpetual Darkness. The calf’s first winter is the most precarious. This calf is experiencing her first winter. I can see that she is a female calf by her fine feminine sex characteristics. The male calves are larger and masculine. During summer it is generally late evening, dusk, during the night and early morning when one sees the beautiful Moose browsing and foraging in the forests and along the rivers and roadways. ~ Sharon Mau Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved / My images do not belong to the public domain and may not be reproduced in any manner whatsoever without my written authorization.
