This was one of the most awesome sunsets I have stood around for – way out in the interior. The tree was so arresting in silhouette and the light was pooling more and more intensely. It was actually raining slightly. / And I was getting nibbled at by turtles in the water as I clicked away over that magic hour.

I am lucky enough to live right next to a forest so I took the kids bush walking and got this photo of the sunset through the long grass.. I just really liked the golden tones and I had a different grass image but have taken it down and replaced it with this one.

In speaking of the many names of cougar, one folktale tells the story of Native Americans who would bring pelts to trade in what is now New York City. When the Europeans and white settlers would question why all only skins of females (given the lack of manes) were brought for trade, the Native Americans explained that the males lived far away in the mountains, playing a joke of sorts on the naïve newcomers—this is why cougars, who are not specific to mountain regions at all, came to be known as “mountain lions”. The etymological history of the word cougar comes from French naturalist-explorer Count Georges-Louis Leclerc Buffon, who called Puma concolor “cuougar”. This usage was derived from the Brazilian Portugese word cuguacuarana, which in turn came from the Tupi Indian word susuarana, which means “false deer”. We find that this word aptly captures the international allure and cross-cultural nature of the species, while distinguishing our organization from a popular brand of athletic shoes—Puma. Erie as in Erie Canal, Erie Street and Erie Boulevard were named after Lake Erie which in turn was named after the Indian people who lived along the lake’s southern shore, an area where cougars were abundant. The cougars there were called Erielhonan, meaning “long tail” and the Native Americans living there were called Erie or Cat Nation. In 1600, some 14,000 Eries lived in villages between what is now Buffalo, NY and Sandusky, Ohio. In 1656, the Erie were almost exterminated by the Iroquois League. The surviving captives were either adopted or enslaved. Cougar is graceful and balances intention, strength and responsibility. Others are always safe when cougar is in charge. The cougar is very elusive and is rarely encountered in the wild. Because of this quality, cougar can appear without being noticed and quietly take control of a situation. Sometimes this can lead to conflict with others over territory. It is often noted as an animal that is independent, shy and withdrawn. The same characteristics are often found in people with this medicine. Cougar is associated with leadership and teaches decisiveness in the use of personal power. When it attacks it does not hesitate. When threatened it goes for the most vulnerable place. Cougar is not often allowed to show vulnerability. True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches those with this totem. Cougar people are often very sure of themselves, not taking any unnecessary steps or exerting any extra energy beyond what is required of them to achieve their goal. Most cougars learn by trial and error, which strengthens them and hones their skills. In life, cougar people may find that others will not like these assertions. Cougar people mustn’t allow others to keep them stationary—cougar people stretch their muscles and show their capabilities. Those with the cougar medicine are often attacked by others, especially by those who have grown comfortable with the status quo and do not wish to see those who have this totem grow. All rights reserved Family: Rubiaceae / Common Name: / Kula Gardenia Grandiflora / Gardenia tubifera Kula / Gardenia tubifera / Gardenia carinata / Gardenia pfordii / Some call them Malaysian Jasmine. I believe the correct name for this gardenia is Gardenia lamingtonia. / Two forms are known, a large flower and a smaller. / G. tubifera is five petaled and has wider, ovate petals with downturned tips. From sepals to bloom face its throat measures 3-4 inches. It is a small tree from up to 15 feet with infrequent, sparse blossom set. G. lamingtonia grows to 20 feet with very heavy bloom set every 2-3 months in Hawai’i. An outstanding and beautiful Gardenia from Thailand cultivated here on Maui. They open with rich creamy white single flowers which turn bright orange as they age. It is a great bloomer that is in full display twice a year on the islands. It has a beautiful fragrance. They must be kept from cold and need full sun to bloom best. These large shrub is growing naturalized in Lower Nahiku. / It is a rare collectible plant. A 4 ” pot will cost from $18.00 to $30.00. Some of the flowers are up to 4” wide. This large, rounded shrub can be trained into a small tree, maintainable to a height under 10 feet. Acid, organic and fertile soil are necessary for healthy plants They produce large, single golden yellow flowers. Flowers change colour while maturing from ivory through golden yellow to orange-yellow. The wonderful fragrance is very strong. They bloom in spring onward. Chandelier and gold work on the walls of Golden Temple in Amritsar city of Punjab(India). Harmandir Sahib (or Hari Mandir) in Amritsar, Punjab state of India, is the holiest shrine in Sikhism. Previously (and still more commonly) known as the Golden Temple. The temple (or gurdwara) is a major pilgrimage destination for Sikhs from all over the world, as well as an increasingly popular tourist attraction.

Steer II (Missy Higgins) / / Pencil drawing, digital colouring The Golden Elephant – story and art by Karin Taylor / A long long time ago in a tropical land where the papaya grow wild and free, there lived a golden elephant who’s beauty was unsurpassed. All the creatures were mesmerised by what appeared to be the sun entering the water when she swam and when she walked on the land everyone stepped aside, as elephants were revered. Legend has it, the golden elephant was once a beautiful warrior princess. Once, in midst of of a terrible battle with her enemy about to take her life, she made a wish that she could become an elephant, for then no harm would come to her. The beautiful warrior princess was granted her wish, tho could sadly not return to her human form, and so it was that the golden elephant lived forever, bringing warmth and light wherever she went. During the darkest nights when the stars hid and the moon disappeared, the beautiful golden elephant shone like the sun, lighting the way for pilgrims on their journey. Although very happy she got what she wished for, the golden elephant found herself still thinking the grass was sometimes greener on the other side. Indeed she would have liked to be human again. But she accepted her new role and did the best she could with her gift of light.
