Through A Glass Darkly. By Paul D Robertson Pastels 140 cms x 97 I like this piece very much. Sometimes in my work I can witness myself taking leaps of quality, and I believe that this is one of those times. It is an indescribable sensation to see my own hands make something such as this. I begin the with a person, a woman, before me, some materials – paper, chalk, paint. At the end of the slow still hours quickening my fingers, I surface from the fugue and wake from the trance of working. And sometimes I have something before me that is beautiful that did not exist, that what the world did not hold before I began. And it will last for centuries. I love the idea of obscured reflections and scattered and refracted light – my desire to work is pushed further every time I stumble upon something I know I must pursue. In many of my works, whenever it is practical, I will place a left-hand print on a wall or smudging a piece of glass. I have done this for years, and I will never stop. Recently the idea occurred to me that since this has become one of the defining symbols within my work, I could execute a piece based entire on the idea. So I made it happen. I forced it into existence. And I am so left handed, you see, that I almost walk with a limp.

STALKING TIGER Slowly through the grass / The tiger stalked his prey / His movement long and languid / In the middle of the day / The sun was high and bright / As a vivid burning orb / His body moving slowly / Less heat there to absorb / Gazelles were moving fitfully / Around the waterhole / Nervous eyes were flitting wildly / As the world they did behold / A movement in the distance / And the animals did jump / The nerve ends all a jangling / Each one with quivering rump / Then like avenging angels / The tiger now does pounce / Gazelles are scattering wildly / With a death like spinning dance / And one of them is slower / No longer held at bay / The tiger now triumphant / As it finishes its prey Phil Sanders (aka Brummieboy) / 5/4/07 Thanks for the wonderful poem Phil!

I was driving along a road in a seaside town at Jervis Bay National Park, just 2.5 hours south of Sydney Australia when I glimpsed this moon through some trees with a pathway of silver light across the water. A lucky moment, in that all the elements were there but tricky in putting them together because it was so dark I couldn’t see anything through the viewfinder and had to keep taking pics, viewing them on the LCD display and then moving the tripod to get the composition I wanted. / It looks to me like the trees on either side of the moon are partners about to dance onto the floor of some enchanted ballroom. The defensive Tower house of Smailholm, just over the Scottish border, near Kelso. The tower was built in the mid 1400’s at a time when lawlessness and violent bands of reivers, ravaged the lands both sides of the English-Scottish border. And a solitary white swan, resides below the Tower Even today, the landscape is lonely, and you can easily imagine the starkness of those dark days. Dreary dull, grey, original digital photograph. / Lots of photoshop layers and borrowed sunset from my bonny Northumberland, Budle Bay photo. Inversion and refining with digital painting….. it would have been easier to conventionally paint this!!

Significantly, the initial / two images in the “Fabricate” campaign / claimed first and second place in / the latest Commercial/Advertising Photographer / of the Year International Aper-ture Awards. In the only other competition / Dean has entered—as a student—he / claimed a gold and silver distinction and / a runner-up award for prints in the annual / Australian Professional Photographers / Association awards. / “ ‘Fabricate’ is a collaboration of / some of the best stylists and production / people that Australia has to offer / and I feel it definitely shows. There will / be five images in the series and the first / two took months to produce so there are / still three more to complete. It’s a really / exciting campaign,” says Dean. / “Fabricate,” as Dean explains, has a / double meaning and is an exploration / into conceptualization; its execution / is definitely a mental exercise. “ ‘Fabricate’ / refers both to the subject of fashion / photography, the clothes, and more / importantly to the images’ fabrication—how they are created in the sense that / they are highly stylized pre- and postproduction / collages,” he says. / Each image is designed and created / with the intention of arousing intense curiosity / and examination into not only its / finality but also how it was made and its / underlying theme. “The images turn the / exhibition of fashion through photography / back on itself by exposing the process / of exhibition itself—exhibiting the / exhibit, if you will,” says Dean. While this / is a classic case of a picture being worth a / thousand words, Dean points out that the / multi-layered images allow viewers to analyze / the process of digital photography itself, / which incorporates surreally collaged / objects or has perfectly manicured and / poised models caught in mid-jump. / “The series is united by a sense of volatility,” / Dean says. “Subjects are frozen within / turbulent scenes. This chaos, depicted / through flapping wings, flowing dresses / and crashing objects, is meant to reflect / the flippant, fleeting and unstable nature / of the fashion industry. And yet within this / chaos each image captures an ephemeral / moment of beauty, allowing the models to / maintain their dominance—to which the / audience is unwittingly subjected.” Scrutinize / the superb images and you will see / exactly what he means. / As with all complex and multi-faceted / campaigns, the genesis of “Fabricate” has / been long and demanding. Several months / were devoted to drafting the original concepts, / set building, hair and costume design. / Each image is multi-layered and the / set design was a combination of over 20 / different elements. All backgrounds for / the series’ images were shot in an old museum, / a location that provided ideal elements / such as walls, floors and windows. / A major technical challenge was ensuring / consistency of lighting—its quality, intensity / and direction.
