  • Through A Glass Darkly. By Paul D Robertson Pastels 140 cms x 97 I like this piece very much. Sometimes in my work I can witness myself taking leaps of quality, and I believe that this is one of those times. It is an indescribable sensation to see my own hands make something such as this. I begin the with a person, a woman, before me, some materials – paper, chalk, paint. At the end of the slow still hours quickening my fingers, I surface from the fugue and wake from the trance of working. And sometimes I have something before me that is beautiful that did not exist, that what the world did not hold before I began. And it will last for centuries. I love the idea of obscured reflections and scattered and refracted light – my desire to work is pushed further every time I stumble upon something I know I must pursue. In many of my works, whenever it is practical, I will place a left-hand print on a wall or smudging a piece of glass. I have done this for years, and I will never stop. Recently the idea occurred to me that since this has become one of the defining symbols within my work, I could execute a piece based entire on the idea. So I made it happen. I forced it into existence. And I am so left handed, you see, that I almost walk with a limp.

  • I was driving along a road in a seaside town at Jervis Bay National Park, just 2.5 hours south of Sydney Australia when I glimpsed this moon through some trees with a pathway of silver light across the water. A lucky moment, in that all the elements were there but tricky in putting them together because it was so dark I couldn’t see anything through the viewfinder and had to keep taking pics, viewing them on the LCD display and then moving the tripod to get the composition I wanted. / It looks to me like the trees on either side of the moon are partners about to dance onto the floor of some enchanted ballroom.   • The defensive Tower house of Smailholm, just over the Scottish border, near Kelso. The tower was built in the mid 1400’s at a time when lawlessness and violent bands of reivers, ravaged the lands both sides of the English-Scottish border. And a solitary white swan, resides below the Tower Even today, the landscape is lonely, and you can easily imagine the starkness of those dark days. Dreary dull, grey, original digital photograph. / Lots of photoshop layers and borrowed sunset from my bonny Northumberland, Budle Bay photo. Inversion and refining with digital painting….. it would have been easier to conventionally paint this!!

Significantly, the initial / two images in the “Fabricate” campaign / claimed first and second place in / the latest Commercial/Advertising Photographer / of the Year International Aper-ture Awards. In the only other competition / Dean has entered—as a student—he / claimed a gold and silver distinction and / a runner-up award for prints in the annual / Australian Professional Photographers / Association awards. / “ ‘Fabricate’ is a collaboration of / some of the best stylists and production / people that Australia has to offer / and I feel it definitely shows. There will / be five images in the series and the first / two took months to produce so there are / still three more to complete. And yet within this / chaos each image captures an ephemeral / moment of beauty, allowing the models to / maintain their dominance—to which the / audience is unwittingly subjected.” Scrutinize / the superb images and you will see / exactly what he means. / As with all complex and multi-faceted / campaigns, the genesis of “Fabricate” has / been long and demanding.
