  • My entry into the Challenge Cafe 4 “The Butterfly Effect” / Excerpt from the Oregonian / December 12, 2007. / Three weeks ago, Oregon and Washington suffered two back to back storms that caused massive flooding and wind damage from hurricane force winds. Today the DA’s office in Portland,Oregon received an anonymous tip that lead to the arrest of a suspect in the cause of these two storms. / The suspect is a Monarch butterfly, from Puerto Rico, visiting relatives in the Portland area. The suspects family had no comment although the lawyer for the butterfly has entered a plea of insanity based on the fact that he was drunk on nector at the time. “He had no idea about the consequences of his actions at the time he beat his wings”. / The defense is basing their sole argument around the “Butterfly Effect”. The case has caused a raging debate across the nation on the use of an “Insanity Plea” for such a heinous incident. / Arraignment is scheduled for Friday. The butterfly is under “garden” arrest, pending further investigation.

  • For over 12 years we cared for an African Leopard on our ranch in Colorado. Cowboy (his name) was was 7 feet long, including his tail and weighed 180 pounds, he was as strong as several men. / He had been retired out of the “PRCA Rodeo Circut” where he had been used to entertain the crowds with the Rodeo Clowns. / It had been determined that he was unable to be put into a zoo, because he had been declawed as a cub and would not be able to defend himself. / We took him on when the fellow who owned him was unable to find a place where he could live out his life in comfort and safety… so you might say that we rescued a Leopard from being put to death because his usefulness had been retired. / This is one of two portraits I ever did of Cowboy…and this one was inspired by the way he would lay in the grass under the trees… and although he never killed anything… he was facinating to watch, his instincts were finely tuned and you always knew that if he were ever allowed off of the steel running cable he was on, he would be on you “In A Heart Beat!” / Cowboy passed away several years ago, we gave him 12 extra years of a good life…two cut up, raw, bones and all, Holly Farms Roasting Chickens a day…he loved warm coffee in a bowl (with cream) and he would roll over on his back if he knew I was bringing him Mac & Cheese! / I miss him to this day.
