In a recent fit of madness, I cut off my beard, the whole thing…if you don’t count a little Dizzy Gillespie soul patch action under the lower lip.. on me, it looks like a smear. I’ve had a beard almost as long as I’ve had eyebrows, I think…. Anyway, it seemed like a good idea at the time – all this talk about change wears you down – so I lopped it all off and, as I reported to a few friends in email, discovered a sort of depressed, underfed pigeon staring at me from the mirror…Then I remembered why some of us wear beards… I plan to grow it back – rubbing Rogaine on my chin as I write this…and, in all likelihood, as you read this…. One brave soul asked to see evidence of the naked visage… Since we aims to please, and since shawhouse is nothing if not photojournalist first, something else second, I took this snapshot….. Before you ask, yes, I touched it up a little in photoshop… shawhouse

Today we visited the Medieval Festival held at Gumeracha, in the Adelaide Hills. There were so many interesting people there, including this man, Keith, who makes silver jewelry and replica artifacts from the past. His particular love is viking history. He was dressed in period costume and his hair and beard were perfect – in fact he could have stepped out of a previous time. He was interesting to talk with, and kind enough to pose for me. I have layered his portrait with some textures to bring out the depth of the character in his wonderful face. Oh, and that is a great walking staff he is holding – a great weapon for defending yourself, if you have to! Canon 40D, Sigma 18-200 / various textures added in photoshop. Today was the Torremendo, (Spain) Annual Fiesta, celebrating their Saints day, where 2 Oxen pull a cart carrrying a statue of Jesus around the town and horse riders and pedestrians proceed and follow. Last year I rode, but decided I would snap some photos this time. This elderly man had a wonderful character visage, so I plucked up the courage to snap a shot! He was just a follower. The day was blazing hot, so he must have been melting in his coat and hat. This is the first time I have managed to capture an older person to apply this effect to and I am quite pleased with the result! I have removed the background as it was full of people and was messy. / 2 hours worth of editing in PSP, including manually adding the Dragan effect! / Nikon D40 18-55mm / Started photography May 2008

Their habitats are considerably varied, ranging from cold and montane regions to the grassy slopes, meadowlands and riverbanks of Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa, Asia and across North America. Irises are perennial herbs, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises), or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises). They have long, erect flowering stems, which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section.
