Red Pandas are found in the temperate forests of the Himalayas and some high mountain areas of China and Myanmar (Burma). Anatomical features indicate Red Pandas are most closely related to the racoon and similar to giant pandas and bears but are now in a ‘family’ of their own. Like Giant Pandas, Red Pandas have an extra ‘thumb’ which is simply an enlarged bone. In captivity Red Pandas can live up to 14 years but it is not known how long they live in the wild. / The Chinese name for Red Panda is hunho or firefox, due to their colour and similar size to a fox. The red panda was first discovered in 1821, 48 years before the giant pandas were found in 1869. The major threats confronting Red Pandas are loss and fragmentation of habitat due to deforestation; poaching for the pet and fur trades; and competition from domestic livestock. The fur of Red Pandas is used to make hats and clothing by local people in China. The fur hat with its long, luxurious tail at the back looks beautiful and warm. In Yunnan Province, this type of hat is still desired by newlyweds, because it was regarded as a talisman for a happy marriage in the past. The Red Panda is nearly extinct in the western part of its range due to human interference in its natural habitat. / The ‘Exotica Collection’ wildlife painting portrays the beauty of the shy Red Panda while creating an awareness of their plight.
mama bear was crossing road, two bicyclers had passed earlier, so i thought a pretty cool shot of her crossing w/ them in background

A gentle piece by Giclee Artist Skye Ryan-Evans. This scene of a lone Polar Bear silently gliding through Arctic waters while an Aurora Borelis shimmers behind him, is serene and unforgettable! Designed as a poignant anti-global warming , anti-oil drilling and anti-hunting statement. 25% of proceeds from sales of this item go to support Defenders of Wildlife, in their valiant efforts to lobby for the proper protection of these magnificent creatures of the ice.

The Red Panda, also called the Firefox or Lesser Panda (Latin name: Ailurus fulgens, “shining cat”), is a mostly herbivorous mammal, specialized as a bamboo feeder. It is slightly larger than a domestic cat (40 – 60 cm long, 3 – 6 kg weight). The Red Panda is endemic to the Himalayas in Bhutan, southern China, Pakistan, India, Laos, Nepal, and Burma. There is an estimated population of fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. Their population continues to decline due to habitat fragmentation.
This Piece, titled “Hope”, is part of the wildlife series painted in watercolor by Missouri artist Paul Jackson. St. Louis Zoo’s lone polar bear, Hope lived to be 23-years-old and was a favorite at the St Louis zoo since 1986. She passed away March of 2009.
This past week I encountered Bear 3 times…a very small bear, probably a One year old. One day he climbed up the pine tree in our front yard, messed around with the hummingbird feeder, then down from the tree he came and over the fence to the next-door neighbor’s yard, where he climbed one of her trees and took a nap. He was so adorable, I just wanted to go up and hug him….. I feel so blessed to have seen him right in my front yard here in Estes Park, Colorado. :-) Teddy Bear—Elvis

Best on Full Size “B” is for Bear Another image from our most recent adventures with Fuzzy Wuzzy. This one gives a good idea of his size … Dear Hubby estimates Fuzz is about at 300 lbs. Fuzzy Wuzzy is about to dip his huge paws into the dumpster and grab a bite to eat. And make a mess. Yes, we were safely in the car. Put the lid back down, folks!!! Image taken at the parking lot of the condos at Blue Knob Resort at dusk on June 12, 2009 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter was at 1/50, aperture f.56, exp 0.00, and iso 800. Post Processing included Photomatix hdr from a single, shakily hand-held image, duplicated in Photoshop to an eval of +/- 2, then back to Photoshop for minor tweaks (including cleaning the food off his face).
FEATURED in Bears Of The World! and UnlimitedQuality! on Aug 22/09. Thank you so kindly to the hosts of Bears Of The World and Unlimited Quality! On a mid summer’s early morning a lone Black Bear can be seen among some tall glowing grasses in Yellowstone National Park. In this photo the has a dandelion in her mouth and her eyes already on another one. I don’t really know if it is a female bear for sure, but due to the relatively small size and adorable more feminine appearance in my opinion, I believe it is more likely a female. We spotted this same bear in the same field two mornings prior to taking this photo, but finally on our third visit here, she ventured close enough to capture better shots of her! As you can see, she has quite a chunck missing from one ear and she is still yet in a rather thick unkept winter coat in mid summer. If one watches her walk, they can’t miss a distinct limp from a sore right front leg. It is my hope that she heals up and gets enough nutrition before it is time for hibernation. Inland Bears are smaller than their coastal cousins, due to a coastal bears’ diet which includes salmon, which is rich in fat. I doubt this little bear was more than 90.7 KG (200 lbs). / Bears are omnivorous, eating anything that comes their way, grass, fruit, berries, roots, mammals, birds, carrion, grubs and ants, fish, frogs, etc. “ABOUT THE PHOTO” Taken on July 24/09 at 9:20am Vancouver Island time ( 10:20am Yellowstone time). / Taken in Yellowstone National Park, US. / Taken in Raw. / Camera; Canon 40D / Lens; Canon EF 100-400 mm IS USM. / Iso 800, 400 mm, f/5.6, 1/640 / No cropping!
I hope no one is getting tired of these bears. I try to only upload images that have enough differences to make them truly individual works. The bears just happened to be very cooperative so I have lots of images of them! This image is a combination of two of my own photographs layered together.
