We must have spent hours photographing this “Little Bee Eater” next to a river in Samburu National Park (Kenya). After a while I got lucky (although there is another one I like that will be adding soon, of a pair) and was able to get this shot. A light breeze ruffled the feathers as I was about to take my shot, giving me something more distinctive. / / (Samburu National Park – Kenya) / / / / /

Starting to get on the endangered list. This Falcon was sitting on a fence. The background is a green meadow dotted with yellow dandylions giving the yellow/green look. He was incredibly curious about the noise my camera made – everytime I clicked, he looked. I have since heard that they make clicking noises themselves so i wonder if he thought my camera had a fellow falcon inside it. Mallard duck The mallard is a large and heavy looking duck. It has a long body and a long and broad bill. The male has a dark green head, a yellow bill, is mainly purple-brown on the breast and grey on the body. The female is mainly brown with an orange bill. It breeds in all parts of the UK in summer and winter, wherever there are suitable wetland habitats, although it is scarcer in upland areas. Mallards in the UK may be resident breeders or migrants – many of the birds that breed in Iceland and northern Europe spend the winter here. / Where to see them It is the commonest duck and most widespread so you have a chance of seeing it just about anywhere where there is suitable wetland habitat, even in urban areas. / When to see them All year round. / What they eat Seeds, acorns and berries, plants, insects and shellfish.

This is the 2nd of 12 Acrylic paintings I’m producing for my ‘Distinguishing Features’ 2010 calendar. This painting was really fun to do. I love the Tucan’s bill. All those colours are such a joy to paint.. I also like the way I painted the soft feathers. I’m really proud of this painting. It’s definately one of my best. 10 more birds to go!
