A new image taken just today of a single Dragonfly that found his way into the back window of my car; I don’t drive this vehicle much, as I recently purchased a newer model…..I saw him in the back window and he wasn’t moving….he turned out to be a very coorperative model for several shots; I hope you like them. Icon #2 Point Ormond I am doing a St Kilda/ Elwood icon series. / I wanted to get the Point Ormond beacon. But when I climbed up there last night I realised the base had recently been encased in concrete and it looks horrible. / So I wandered down to the beach and took a shot of the city from Elwood with the beacon in the top right hand corner. Photo of one of the Beacons at Port Melbourne this one is in the water between both Station and Princess Piers, the other is inland and in line with this one. The sea was fairly calm when this was taken.

The lighthouse stands alone. / It leads a solitary existence whose purpose is to shine light into dark places. No two lighthouses will ever stand together….for then neither would show their true light to the world. They require space and distance to do their best work. So they spread their light across the land, and across the ocean, steadfast and courageous, guiding, inspiring, never knowing who might be touched by their radiance, always seemingly alone. Yet imagine – what if they could connect with the energy of another lighthouse in a distant place, and their combined power and light create a previously unknown magic to embrace the Earth with force and compassion. While their feet remain firmly planted on their homeground, it is only the space between them that allows the healing light to travel back and forth across expanse and time so that it can be seen and felt by all. Would the Earth itself feel this web of illumination? This is a painting I did three years ago. It was intended as a tribute to the great city of Liverpool, England and whilst being a bit whimsical it did include images of the Anglican Cathedral, the Catholic Cathedral, Saint John’s Beacon and of course the Beatles. I swapped it with a popular Vancouver (Canada) artist, John Ferrie, for one of his lovely floral acrylics. I wish I’d never swapped now … although I still like John’s painting and it still / hangs on our wall. Owing to a misunderstanding of English etiquette, when I sent John a photo of his painting hanging on our wall he failed to reciprocate. A photo of my painting hanging on John’s wall would have meant an awful lot to me, ‘cos I really respected the guy. Instead of good-naturedly returning my compliment, he claimed I was forcing him to “jump through hoops” when I reminded him a month later. He refused to take the photo and stopped emailing me, claiming I must be suffering from depression … sad, but these things happen and I wish him no ill … he’s a good artist and was a good friend while it lasted. Wherever you are John, I wish you a happy 2009.

I was off to take some photographs of some waterfalls in the Breacon Beacons in Wales when I almost missed this scene. Had there not been a break in the cloud I may have missed it. It was probably the best drive by shooting photograph I have to date. I’ve had a little play in photoshop and thought I’d post the results. / The original was shot using a Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 27mm, f/8, 1/60 sec, ISO 400. No filters used and mounted on the car door. I then upped the exposure in photoshop with a layered PS approach and added some crows for effect. I hope you like it. © Copyright 2009 David Reid – redtree.me – All rights reserved.
