  • A beach, or strand, is a geological landform consisting of loose rock particles – such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, cobble – or even shell fragments, along the shoreline of a body of water. Beaches occur along coastal areas, where wave or current action deposits and reworks sediments, or at the margin of land along a lake or river subject to erosion caused by rainfall. Beaches are not necessarily found in conjunction with salt water, such as the ocean, in all instances. A seashore beach is merely one type of beach but it is the most commonly associated with the perception of the word beach.

  • The ocean is a very powerful force, this was especially evident on a rather stormy Thursday in April at the world famous Bells Beach, Australia.

  • The wild surf continuously came up and teased this surfer as he stood on the shore contemplating his decision to venture into huge, storm generated swells and waves at Bells Beach.

  • The high tide shorebreak at Bells Beach on the Great Ocean Road.

  • These two boys took pebble tossing to a new level; they were hoisting sizable rocks and flinging them into the sea. The splash was music to the ears of these two beach boys!

  • Sanibel Island, on the southern Gulf shore of Florida, is a lovely place to vacation. It is considered a sheller’s paradise and is ranked number one of American beaches noted for seashells. It also has some glorious sunrises and sunsets; this was daybreak on the island in late July 2008.

  • This great blue heron was regularly on the beach right alongside the people who were swimming, fishing, lounging, reading, sunbathing. I didn’t see anybody feeding him as this is strictly forbidden, but he stayed close to his human neighbors nonetheless. When I took a close look at this photo on my computer, I noticed a fishing string which seems to be trailing from his left side. It doesn’t seem to be interfering with his eating, flying, or regular bird activities. He looked at me inquisitively as I got closer and closer to him, but he didn’t budge one inch as I clicked away within just a few feet of him.

  • I’d like to dedicate this image to my daughter-in-law, Chrissy Barry, who loves black and white. You can view her gallery here: Christine Barry

  • While scouring the beaches of Sanibel Island, the number one shelling beach in the U.S., I found two angel wing seashells. It wasn’t until later that I learned the angel wing is a rare treasure, a most unusual find. This photo is of the larger one which measures about three and one fourth inches in length. I feel truly blessed that I found two of these delicate beauties! May the angels watch over you and guard you and smile warmly upon all who read this today!

  • A photo from my project “Latvian Landscapes”.

  • I guess it’s the colder weather that’s got me thinking about summer and the beach so I revisited my photos from our trip to Sanibel Island, Florida, this past summer and noticed this one which brought back good memories of sunset strolls on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico.
