A Sunday stroll along the cliffs at Saltburn – considering it was a cold winter’s day, the beach was pretty busy.
Another view from yesterday. The Ship Inn in the foreground, with its old Smuggling history, now turned into a curiosity shop and museum. The coastal road snaking its way towards Saltburn and a smear of sea coal smudging the sand before the victorian pier. In the distance, the blast furnace belches smoke into the darkening sky.
Photograph of the Riverdance which ran aground on the beach near Blackpool on Thursday night in heavy seas. Below is an extract from the BBC news web page.. Twenty-three people were flown to safety after the ferry was hit by a freak wave which caused it to list on Thursday night. The truck ferry was travelling from Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland to Heysham, Lancashire, when she ran into difficulty just before 2000 GMT. Some of the ferry’s cargo of 50 lorries broke chains holding them down and as the load shifted the vessel began to list at 60 degrees in conditions described as the roughest for a decade. Helicopters from the RAF, Royal Navy and Irish Coastguard battled mountainous seas and 60mph (96km/h) winds to rescue those on board. Initially, four passengers and 10 of the crew were winched ashore, while the remaining nine crew tried to refloat the roll-on roll-off ferry. But they too had to be pulled to safety.

Paulette x was capturing anglers on the shore at Chesil Beach, near Abbotsbury, on the Dorset coast. While she was busy snapping, I snapped the snapper. Chesil Beach, sometimes called Chesil Bank, in Dorset, southern England. is a barrier beach that has “rolled” landwards, joining the mainland with Portland Bill. The shingle beach is 29 kilometres (18 mi) long, 200 metres (660 ft) wide and 15 metres (50 ft) high. The beach and the Fleet are part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the location for a book On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. / Varying with the Bank’s unbroken increase in height to 14.7m above mean high water, the size of the flint and chert shingle varies from pea-sized at the north-west end (by West Bay) to potato-sized at the south-east end (by Portland). It is said that smugglers who landed on the beach in the middle of the night could judge their position by the size of the shingle.

BEST VIEWED WHEN ENLARGED This is Saltwick Bay, near Whitby, North Yorkshire, England just before the sun broke the horizon. The wonder of the light made it worthwhile getting up so early! Apart from the amazing sky that morning, I like how the colours in the sky reflected on the wave platform filling the viewfinder with pink and blue.
The traditional seaside showing of Punch & Judy waits for its next audience. The sun was shining behind me, with dark rainclouds to the front of me. Over-use of ND filters has enhanced the clouds. The clouds eventually left and I didn’t get wet, it was actually very hot! Weymouth, UK.
