*photo taken at Santa Monica beach, CA
This was taken on a tiny Ulva Island which is off the coast of Stewart Island..which is off the coast of the South Island of New Zealand! It was a special time for me travelling alone and I remember this was the start of photography becoming more than just taking snapshots. I could crouch down, get my elbows sandy, focus in on something in particular…so this photo holds something special for me.

Is this Dead Marine the sole survivor of a riverside party? / Or is it what remains of a party for one? THE SUBJECT: / A sunken empty beer bottle lies in the shallows left by a receding tide. THE LOCATION: / It was photographed from the Lady Nelson Wharf on the south bank of the Hastings River, in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a late Autumn day. THE MAKING of ‘Dead Marine’: / I was very taken by the colours, tones, contrasts and textures of this little scene and the composition when seen through the viewfinder. / Fuji S9600: RAW, ISO80, Hand held rail supported. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. As a Still Life, you could not get much more still than this subject! THE SUBJECT: / Though the eye of this fish, stranded by the tide, seems to be pleading for help, I am afraid that the poor ol’ fish is way beyond any help on this Earth. Dead as a door nail! / It was the colours, contrast, light, shadow, textures and that great big dead eye that attracted me to make a shot of this subject. Though it is dead, it now lives on in perpetuity. THE LOCATION: / The photograph was made at a little cove called Spooney’s Bay, at the south end of Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills, NSW, Australia, about a thirty minute drive south of Port Macquarie. THE MAKING of ‘Stranded!’: / Fuji S9600: f/4.5 @ 1/125sec, Cicular polarising filter, Macro mode, Hand held. / Lightroom & Photoshop CS3. On Sanibel Island, Florida, there was a darling little shop called She Sells Seashells by the Seashore; this image looks like something that might be sold there. The lightning whelk I photographed is the first shell I found on the island on the first morning my husband and I hit the beach to look for treasures.
Midday walk at the beach, a play with extreme light, experimental figurative work. Effects done in camera. Best viewed large.

Why “Reggae”? I’ll let you work that out! THE SUBJECT”: / I was doing some photographic beachcombing late on a mid-autumn morning when I saw what I thought was a Bob Marley wig that had been left high and dry by the receding tide. After walking around it a few times I settled on this angle so as to incorporate the curves of the sand patterns as a left hand lead-in and set up the tripod. THE LOCATION: / Right at the most southern end of Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills, NSW, Australia, is a nice little cove called Spooney’s Bay. THE MAKING of ‘Reggae’: / I processed this one much more heavily than usual in both my programs to bring out the texture and patterns in the sand and the spaghetti-like mass of the seaweed and to make it a more artistic image. / Fuji S9600: Manual settings of f/8 @ 1/250sec, Manual focus, Tripod, Timer. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. THE SUBJECT: / From the moment I saw this and the other six high tide mark scenes I thought of making an abstract series – something very new to me. THE LOCATION: / The series was shot on Wash House Beach, Dunbogan, NSW, Australia, on a very grey summer day. THE MAKING of ‘Beachcombings #7’: / As the processing evolved the idea grew to include a completely different mirrored images to the original and the idea to process, present and display them like this took root. / My idea for an exhibition display is to have front lighting on the top image and back lighting to the bottom image. I think it would be very effective. / Fuji S9600: f/3.8 @ 1/950, Manual focus, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3 for some heavy processing. This looks really good at full screen with a black background. / 2. I’m not too sure about the vignetting being on all the corners of all the images. Perhaps only on the four extreme corners would suffice? Visit the Close-up/Abstract/Still Life collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more beachcombing delights. BEACHCOMBINGS / (Click the links!) THE SUBJECT: / From the moment I saw this and the other six high tide mark scenes I thought of making an abstract series – something very new to me. / I feel this diptych is the best of the series so decided to see how it looked in a side by side arrangement. I like it! / (By the way, it is not really a seahorse just a piece of seaweed that looks like one). THE LOCATION: / The series was shot on Wash House Beach, Dunbogan, NSW, Australia, on a very grey summer day. THE SUBJECT: / Part of a well weathered and worn piece of black basalt rock surrounded by the interesting patterns made in the sand by the receding tide. THE LOCATION: / Photographed on Lake Cathie Beach, NSW, Australia on summer afternoon. THE MAKING of ‘Tidal Stones – Raging Bull’: / Having had some experience in shooting similar tidal scenes and processing them as abstract images I was on the lookout for any odd shapes, formations and/or flotsam left by the tide. / When I spotted this little scene the black rock was much larger than you see here but I could see the possibility of a bull’s head at the extremes of the rock. / This idea was finally realised when I flipped the image horizontally to make a mirror image of the original. / The original colour photograph was heavily processed using a “recipe” I made just for such abstract work. / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/3.7 @ 1/2000sec, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. UPDATE: 8-9-09 / My raging bull was awarded a Merit in the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s August 2009 Competition in the Set Subject ‘Colour & Texture’ Large Colour Print Section. Enjoy! Sign for The Beachcomber Motel on the Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach, CA. I took this photo/slide around 1982 with my Fujica 35mm and shot it today, backlit, through a very old slide viewer. I think the sign & motel are long gone. March 2009.
