  • there is something alluring about palm trees…they speak of an exotic locale that tends to be out of reach for most of us…a balmy beach in some southern clime…real people who work real jobs (tongue in cheek) tend to work in northern locales that have no safe harbor for the elegant palm…the first frost would do them in…so we sit in our insulated cacoons and dream of paradise in the shade of the majestic palm, sipping a drink adorned with an umbrella, as a warm salty breeze blows in from the surf…

  • This is Venice, Florida which has a lovely beach, great restaurant and a wonderful fishing pier. Birds, dolphin, and stingrays have been seen here. A delightful place to sunbath and relax with a good book. Taken with a Canon XTI. / f/8 / ISO-100 / 1/1000sec / 100mm

  • Sharon Mau on the pier at Hana Bay / Ka’uiki Hill / Hana Maui Hawai’i / Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved / Fine Art Photography by my husband, Jacob Mau, using my camera. Ka’uiki Hill is located on the right side of Hana Bay. This hill was formed in one of the last lava flows on Maui. A volcanic vent sprayed lava up into the air. This gaseous lava was caught by the trade winds coming off the ocean, piling the lava into a hill. The lava is rich with iron giving the hill and nearby beaches a deep red colour. There is a trail that leads along Ka’uiki Hill to a red sand beach cove. Along this trail is a plaque marking the site where Queen Ka’ahumanu was born in a nearby cave. She was the favourite wife of Ali’i (King) Kamehameha the Great. The point of Ka’uiki Hill extends into the ocean where a small light beacon is located to warn ships of the shoreline. Hana Bay has a large, black sand beach which is the result of lava eroding and washing into the ocean from a nearby stream. This area is well protected and is usually a very safe place to swim. Hana Bay is a family gathering place for local residents on the weekend. It is here we often meet with our family and friends for birthday parties, wedding showers, funerals, and family gatherings. Often there are outrigger canoe races. You may often see canoe clubs practicing this ancient Hawaiian sport in the mornings or late afternoon.
