  • Back in 2006 I did a walk between Mallacoota, in Victoria’s far east (Croajingolong National Park) over the border into Nadgee Nature Reserve in NSW. I went with a good friend Chris who thought he’d get a bit of nature therapy after a marriage breakup. Unbeknown to me he had a bung knee and was on anti-inflamatories and a day into our four day walk informed me he only had enough anti-inflamatories for three days and would find it difficult to move without them. That was the first surprise, the second surprise was discovered a long and sandy 30km from Mallacoota at our first nights camp that we had some sustenance issues. As I remember the conversation went something like this: / Trav, “Hey Chris can I have the bag with dinner in it.” / Chris, “Um… what bag.” / Trav, “You know those bags with the evening meals in them, I took the tent and the stove and fuel, you took the meals.” / Chris, ” I havn’t got them you didn’t give them too me.” / Trav, “Yes I did, I put them on top of your pack in Melbourne before we left.” / Chris, ” I think we have a problem….” / Ya Despite the slightly rushed and hungry nature of the journey it was an amazing trip crossing stunning dune fields and then inland in NSW as the coast became lined by impenatrable cliffs. On the second night we camped at Nadgee Beach and after I took an 8km side trip (returning after dark) to find some poor quality water in a almost stagnant stream we had a dinner of sorts (the next day I found a rangers hut with the aid of a better map a few hundred meters on from the previous nights water stop which had beautiful clear tank water… doh). Waking the next morning I poked my head out of the door of my tent and had my breath taken away on spying a stunning pink sky with a rainbow in it. I catapulted out of my sleeping bag grabbed my gear ran down to the river placed my foot on a wet rock and went for a six into the river. So complete was my fall that my entire body and camera bag ended up submerged in the freezing water. I badly gashed my wrist and between my cussing frantically checked my camera gear to see if it was soaked or not. Fortunately I was the only thing that got wet. After I finally managed to master my pain and dry myself enough to handle my gear I got back to the task of taking photographs. Of course by this time the pink sky and rainbow had gone but the first orange rays lit the cliffs in a lovely way so took a few shots of them instead. An amazing trip all told although poor Chris suffered a bit and hasn’t walked with me since… sorry buddy. • Part of Tomaree National Park and a popular holiday and eco-tourism retreat just 2.5 hours drive north of Sydney and 30 minutes from Newcastle airport. This beach (Fingal Bay) forms part of the day long walk from Tomaree Head (pictured) to the stockton sand dunes. Add another day if you intend walking to the mouth of the Hunter River at Newcastle. The walk is easy and these times are for liesurely walkers, giving ample time for swimming and a stop at the Blue Juice Cafe at Anna Bay!

  • Sunrise at Emerald Beach / Coffs Coast NSW Australia

  • I took this photo on the 14 Feb 2009. Valentines Day. What you can’t see in this image is how bad the rain was that day. I got soaked and my gear got wet. This is a 3exp HDR generated in photomatix and then touched up a bit in Lightroom. Shot on a Nikon D700 with a 2.8 16-35mm nikkor zoom. alexkess.com

  • Garie Beach, HDR Pano, created out of 8 shots in PTGUI then converted it in to HDR via single raw conversion in photomatix. This is one of the most beautiful and serene places in Sydney, set right in the heart of the royal national park. alexkess.com

  • An experiment with long exposure to creat surreal landscape. Shot with Hoya NDX400 filter that according to my trials allows to slow down the exposure by 20-25 digital stops, ie from 0.8 without the filter down to 70 sec with the filter. Dee Why Lagoon, Northern Beaches, NSW Canon 5D / Canon EF 24-105 F/4-5.6 IS USM lens / ISO: 50 / Speed: 70 sec / Aperture: f/13 / FL: 24mm / WB: Auto / Focus: Manual / Image: Raw, slightly adjusted when converted Thank you for looking!

  • The last from my shoot at Pebbly Beach, South Coast NSW (near Durras). Had a ball taking these, so much so we drove down again the following day to Jervis Bay, those pics still to come. Sony A350 / f22 / 30 secs / ISO 100 / Cokin ND8 and ND8 grad filters

  • A secret beach near Eden NSW ;)

  • One of the wonderful NSW South Coast Sunrises; this one at the northern end of Racecourse Beach, near Ulladulla, NSW. Despite the huges waves, I was amazed at the lone fisherman on the rock shelf in the mid-ground of the image (seen easily when viewed large). One might call them ‘dedicated’. I could also think of other words…...........
