How many sales of this design – 1 sale so far :) / Pelican Love is from the ‘Beach Series’ and ‘Friends Series’ of original paintings by Karin Taylor. / It was created using ink and pastel on pastel paper. There is a beautiful story about the love that pelicans have for their babies, I thought I’d share it with you Reference taken from the Wikepedia Encyclopedia (please forgive the length of this, but it is SO interesting, thought I may as well share the whole thing !) In medieval Europe, the pelican was thought to be particularly attentive to her young, to the point of providing her own blood when no other food was available. As a result, the pelican became a symbol of the Passion of Jesus and of the Eucharist. It also became a symbol in bestiaries for self-sacrifice, and was used in heraldry (“a pelican in her piety” or “a pelican vulning (wounding) herself”). Another version of this is that the pelican used to kill its young and then resurrect them with its blood, this being analogous to the sacrifice of Jesus. Thus the symbol of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is a pelican, and for most of its existence the headquarters of the service was located at Pelican House in Dublin, Ireland. For example, the emblems of both Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and Corpus Christi College, Oxford are pelicans, showing its use as a medieval Christian symbol (‘Corpus Christi’ means ‘body of Christ’). Likewise a folktale from India says that a pelican killed her young by rough treatment but was then so contrite that she resurrected them with her own blood.[1] These legends may have arisen because the pelican used to suffer from a disease that left a red mark on its chest[citation needed]. Alternatively it may be that pelicans look as if they are stabbing themselves as they often press their bill into their chest to fully empty their pouch. Yet other possibilities are that they often rest their bills on their breasts, and that the Dalmatian Pelican has a blood-red pouch in the early breeding season.[1]

Scratched negatives, cross processing, accidental double exposures. These are the magic and spontaneity of using film. The little mistakes or slips that create unique works of art. In this digital age, where do we find such wonderful mistakes? Recently James took this photo of me jumping around on the beach. The memory card corrupted and we were left with a strange hot pink band across most of the image. My first reaction was “what a shame” but I quickly fell in love with it and had a play. Probably because it stood out from the 50 other ‘perfectly good’ images. a collaboration / taken at Portsea

Fell in deep like with Jake the Clydesdale on a visit to a working farm. He got bored after the carrots ran dry and wandered off in disgust. So, here he is, set free on a beach & processed with love. A tribute to all the pretty horses and the peace they breathe into our battered souls.

/ I used candlewax, few different sized black marker pens, retractable pencils, charcoal white and black, ink and pastels on a small piece of timber to create “Happiness Always”......and that’s what I wish for everyone…. happiness always it could be for a newborn baby, just cheer someone who’s a little sad, or for a birthday ~ wishing someone happiness always is just a nice thing to do any time of the year :)

/ / “Beach Picnic” is a pencil drawing which I’ve coloured digitally, I hope you like this image with mother and daughter in similar sundresses. As a child we enjoyed beach picnics all the time, mum would make us special fried chicken (better than Kentucky Fried) and we would go out on the boat to a little island, where i would play with soldier crabs for hours on end, while dad fished and mum sunbaked… they were wonderful times. We also went on the annual Beach Picnic to Bonny Hills with the church and we were great friends with the priest back in those days who was a top water skier.. We would see so many things at Bonny Hills, sea snakes slithered past in the creek where we were swimming and there were amazing white clay deposits in the sand….hours of fun were had by all… not to mention we even had a little mass there… top fun :)

Summer Breeze a beautiful poem by the same title by a dear friend of mine Anne Van Alkemade / Inspired by the song Summer Breeze / by Seals and Croft Also inspired by myself and my experience of having bugs and insects come to try and take up residence in my ears… scrabbling around in there, getting all comfy…while I’m going crazy…click beetles, houseflies and spiders so far have all tried this… lol This is a girl who has an affinity with nature, and as the summer breezes begin to blow here in Australia…....the animals are drawn to live in her hair thinking that it must be branches of a tree… yes, my hair’s that dry… :) I thought it a fitting one for summer, hope you like her… Pencil drawing took me about 3 hours / Digital colouring – 10 hours / Total time 13 hours

/ / / I was thinking about when I was around 9 years of age see me at 9 / / ....and I was reminiscing about our pet Blue-ringed Octopus we kept in the fishtank…. he was only tiny, but provided hours of entertainment…when he got riled up, he would put on a fantastic colour show for us…but it occurred to me how hard it must be to be a venomous creature… because you wouldn’t get many hugs, even if you wanted them! / / We spent a lot of our days at Shelley Beach, Port Macquarie and dad caught many strange and wonderful things, which we kept in our saltwater tanks… we also lived at the police lockup, so we had the human variety locked up beside us…and mum would cook meals for them, i would dance for them while they had their exercise break out on the front step, with nothing at all to stop them wandering off…cept me doing a little dance… i must have been riveting as none of them ever tried to escape…and we were kinda friends with the prisoners back in those days… some even sketched and drew pictures of myself and siblings, after getting my mum to go and buy them a little pack of coloured pencils… those were very interesting days :) / / Anyway, we have a bit of a history with capturing wild things in our family, a bit like Steve and Bindi I guess…. so here’s a little drawing, digitally painted, inspired by those days I remember with such fondness… a little girl in her bikini at the beach with a little ‘brunch coat’ as we used to call them over the top…..hosting a dear little Blue-ringed Octopus on her head.. / / There is a funny story I have to share with you too, which is possibly why i put the occy on her head… my father used to catch occy’s for fishing bait (with his bare hands) and stick ‘em in a bucket… his method of killing the poor darlings, was to bite their heads, in the eye area, i kid you not…he believed it the most humane way…. / / To cut the long of it short….. Dad was driving his little truck along after a catch in the Creek at Kingy…when he felt something very strange on the back of his head….the occy he’d caught had crawled out of the bucket….. and where do you think he was…? lol I do miss our menagerie of animals friends, back then i had no idea they were very unusual creatures to keep, including a baby crocodile, a turkey running around the courtyard… and all manner of other strange and wonderful things.

Ahh summer has arrived early for some of us this year. After a day at the beach last weekend, I was able to get that good old feeling back that only summer can bring! These kids were playing around at the beach, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of a time in life when going to the beach, making a sand castle, digging a hole to fill when tide comes in, finding something living a rock and burying someone in sand were the best things you could ever do. Life’s simple pleasures. I live for a sunny day. Look here for an incredible piece of writing by blueeyesjus that puts into words everything this image is conveying. Another one of the shots from the day at Port Melbourne beach. This depicts the scene I would picture in my head whenever I was in a place I didn’t want to be. More often than not, school. More specifically, maths class. I wasn’t built for a classroom, being force fed instructions and problematic things that needed solving. It was always about the freedom of creation to me. So I would sit in class and think about anywhere other than where I was. It’s such a vivid memory, despite being 15 years ago.
