For Jo’ O’Briens Self portrait challenge… I couldnt get the link thing happening…:( This was fun, I set up my camera on the pod, drew a cross in the sand, focused on it..then I did the self timer thing and ran and jumped trying to anticipate being caught in mid air….It took a while to get one that wasn’t too “on the way down” , if you will…:) I recommended it to everyone….Challenge anyone?

  • Illustration of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse with a kite, gulls and sand.

  • This was taken on Morton Island many moons ago on 35mm. / Its a sad tale of a seagull, his fishhead and other would be diners. / This brave soul fought off all comers – well, two other seagulls – who attacked in a classic pincer motion – harrying from both sides. / But this brave Gull was awake on all fronts and held them off until they gave up. / Finally triumphant, our hero paused to savour his win. / And then along came a pelican….flap….flap…flap…. / He flew over the top of the scene, and as he did swivelled his great eye to take in the action below….. and landed. / And over he strode, and in one casual gulp, the fishhead was gone. / I swear I saw the tears in his eyes as this fellow flew off home….hungry and defeated.

  • This one was after the biscuits!

  • Brown Pelican flying low over the water in the morning at the Ocean Springs Beach

  • A bird was kind enough to pose mid air for me… One of my favorite techniques; Make the pic black/white and let some color come through. / Works particularly well on summer skies with a hint of cloud.

  • Hi! My name REALLY IS Polly Peacock! I’ve never really learned how to fly, other than in my dreams, which by the way is incredibly serene, yet exciting, and on airplanes. After viewing this photograph, shot at Manresa Beach State Park in California, I couldn’t help to think that I’d really like to learn how to fly for REAL!! Imagine flying over these Pacific Ocean waves, as this Seagull is doing, and feeling the thrill of crashing and splashing waves, a sunset just beginning and being able to soar with little ease!! Freedom is the feeling that I get from this picture! Maybe someday I’ll REALLY learn how to fly, but for now, I guess I’ll just envy the freedom flyer of this flight!! This photograph was taken with a Canon 40D. /

(by Quotes or Poems or Music or Stories) on June 29, 2009 / Featured in The Scavenger Hunt Red White Blue challenge on July 12, 2009 “Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest height, Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring…” It’s hard to watch and not sing along. ;) / At the end of March the town of Melbourne Beach (Florida) has a Kite Festival. The sky over the beach is filled with colorful kites while kite surfers dot the ocean. I enjoyed photographing this event and have many more shots here. / Flying Kites Plus Kite Surfing / Rotate the card to make the kite soar! Because this shot was taken looking straight up, there is no top or bottom. ;) /

  • We returned to Homer in 2009 especially to spend time with the eagles again. It is my quest to photograph them to a higher standard than I achieved in 2008 especially wanting to bring out the feather detail, head plumage and clear eyes. This bald eagle was caught resting on an old piece of driftwood on Homer Spit. The even light was an advantage for this series of images. When we were reviewing this image we noticed that as he took off he lost one of his feathers - From a day on Homer Spit, Alaska, USA – July 2009.
