  • The sparkling edges of the ocean are rippling gently on the rocky sand before me at low tide here in Black Rock beach. The brilliant noon sun is accenting ribbons of green, turquoise and blue tropical water with intense flashes of reflected light that add dazzle to the shimmering surface. The restful sound of surf is mingling with the rustling of shade trees that form a rich green canopy over our beach and simple, funky sand. I look out over grass and flowers at this wide vista of clear, warm, ever-moving water that is our coast—one of the world’s last untouched environmental treasures…

  • “The Cottage on the beach was everything I had hoped for. Isolated, miles of coastline and the most beautiful white beach. I Ioved walking on the beach at night, especially when the moon is out. Silvery shadows danced on the crashing waves as if inviting me to join in their careless abandon. I wandered along the brightly lit beach in the moonlight, pondering about life, love and what the future holds for me. I felt the warm water lapping at my feet while gazing up at the stars. An easy thing to become entranced within the hidden soul of the universe. A shooting star burst across the nightsky…...perhaps a wish…..” / Macro photograph taken from a rock.

  • The provincetown beach areas have these fences, mostly along the roads, which prevent the sand from migrating on to the road. I love these areas for the everchanging landscape and, well, there’s just something about sand on your feet… Black and white work is somewhat of a departure for me but after living with this one for a while I began to like it a lot. Something about the contrasting geometric shapes of the fence and the rolling dunes brought into stark contrast which otherwise, might go unnoticed in a color rendition.

  • Hale Mahina ~ The Constant Companion / Mauna Kahalawai from Polo Beach Maui Hawaii Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi “The Hawaiian Islands comprise a total of 137 islands and atolls, with a total land area of 6,423.4 square miles (16,636.5 km). Except for Midway, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States, these islands and islets are administered as the State of Hawai`i, the 50th state of the United States of America. The eight main Hawaiian islands (also known as the Hawaiian Windward Islands) are listed here from East to West. All except Kaho`olawe are inhabited. Hawai’i (also known as the Big Island), Maui, Kaho`olawe (uninhabited; temporary residential facilities), Lana`i, Moloka`i, O`ahu, Kaua`i and Ni`ihau. Smaller islands, atolls, and reefs (beyond Ni`ihau and all uninhabited), called the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, or Hawaiian Leeward Islands are: Nihoa (Mokumana), Necker (Mokumanamana), French Frigate Shoals (Mokupapapa), Gardner Pinnacles (Puhahonu), Maro Reef (Nalukakala), Laysan (Kauo), Lisianski Island (Papa`apoho), Pearl and Hermes Atoll (Holoikauaua), Midway Atoll (Pihemanu), and Kure Atoll (Kanemiloha`i). Some information sources state that there are 137 “islands” in the Hawaiian chain. This number includes all minor islands and islets offshore of the main islands (listed above) and individual islets in each atoll. Following is a list of islets and small offshore islands that make up the total count beyond 19: Ford Island (Moku`ume`ume), Lehua, Ka`ula, Kaohikaipu, Manana, Mokolea Rock, Na Mokulua, Molokini, Mokoli`i, and Moku Manu. The West Maui Mountains or West Maui Volcano, known to Kanaka, the Hawaiians, as Mauna Kahalawai, form a much eroded shield volcano that constitutes the western one-quarter of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The Hawaiian name for the mountains is “Kahalewa`i”, meaning House of Water. Another name is Hale Mahina meaning ‘House of the Moon’. It is believed that these mountains are named for the Goddess Hina of the Moon.” Source: Wikipedia
