South Beach Oregon
Came across this at the near deserted beach along a stretch of the Oregon Dunes National Park. Perfect position for my polarizer to take full advantage of the perpendicular sun.
A hand coming out of the sand asking for help? I will donate 30% of the proceeds to the Kids with Cancer Foundation.
Taken near Holland, Michigan in October 2007. The winds were very strong that day. Very hard to shoot pictures with all the sand blowing around. I loved it though. :) Thanks, Brion.
Recent storms and cyclonic weather have washed up huge debris from the rivers running into the ocean. on the Gold Coast Beaches. / /
At times when menacing skies deliver a statement formatted in dark clouds, make sure to read the small drizzle carefully. Occasionally known to be a person who doesn’t want his determination undermined by a rational argument, I ignored it. A mosaic of randomly placed stones left a peculiar grinding sound with each step I made, unbalancing me on a couple of occasions. The uneven surface, unfamiliar environment and cold southerly wind stretched the beach to its maximum size. Here they were, lying hopeless before me. The leviathans from green oceans of alpine rainforests have lost their biological contest. The faith may not be swift, but certainly inevitable for the beached whales of a different kind waiting for their demise on an unforgiving southern coast. I put my hand on them. Their rugged bodies felt eerily warm. No matter how big or strong one may be the law of existence refuses to give up on you. You can postpone it, but not avoid it. Life will be repossessed, the body recycled and today’s eternity will become history.
Photographed on Maui, Hawaii.

An acrylic painting 35cm x 25cm (13.5” x 10”) on paper, of a fallen tree on the shores of a beautiful remote beach in Queensland, Australia. Driftwood can be a nusiance but is important as it provides shelter and food for birds, fish and other aquatic species as it floats in the ocean. What a beautiful place to be.

A large tree trunk that washed up on the pebble ridge at Westward Ho (North Devon in the UK) during stormy weather. Taken at sunset in early Janurary, 2 days later it was gone. The log was around 10ft in length. Minolta dynax 7D / ISO 100 / f/16 / 1/10 sec exposure / 18mm focal length Featured In Going Coastal / SEA
Lover’s Key is a small group of mangrove islands located in Lee County between Ft. Myers Beach, Fl, and Bonita Beach. It’s right on the Gulf of Mexico. The islands are collectively known as Lover’s Key State Park (formerly Carl E. Johnson Park). Inland backwaters full of fish, birds, and marine life, separate the islands from each other. Boats with motors are not allowed within the Park, but motorboats are allowed in the Gulf and Bay waters surrounding the Park, and there is a boat ramp within the park. This is to protect the abundant wildlife, which includes -manatees, dolphins, various herons and roseate spoonbills, ospreys, bald eagles, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, snook, mullet, rays, and a large variety of shellfish. / the driftwood is part of the beauty of the remains from our famous Hurricane Charley sweeping in 2004 ( all of these from this series are straight as is from the camera) a real friend is someone who takes a winter vacation on a sun-drenched beach and does not send a card* —Farmer’s Almanac
Some of the storms and wind that blows into Lovers Key Beach actually blows the shells into the driftwood on the beachs. This image was taken with my Nikon Coolpix P80 on Lovers Key State Park in Bonita Beach, Florida
Watercolour painting 18” x 24” on Arches paper Pebble Beach in Marathon, Ontario where the rocks are very difficult to walk on, being the size of five pin bowling balls! One could easily twist an ankle. The ever-present driftwood and sparkling, crystal clear water always give the visitor a spectacular view, though; well worth the arduous walk to the water’s edge.
This one’s for Karen ... thanks for reminding me of the awesome beachcombing on Sanibel Island. Drfitwood stark against the white sand melting into that amazing turquoise gulf… nothing around for miles except the egrets… / and yeah, I’ve had a few… but then again, too few to mention…
