Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

Signal Hill Sunrise Ceremony, St. John’s Newfoundland. / / This was taken on Canada Day. Many Newfoundlanders mark the date of July 1st not as Canada Day, but as Memorial Day, the date of remembrance for the Beaumont-Hamel battle. / / On July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme in World War I, 801 soldiers of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment rose from the British trenches and went into battle at Beaumont-Hamel, nine kilometers north of Albert in France. After only 30 minutes the regiment was devastated. Only 68 men stood to answer the regimental role call the next morning. / / In November of 1916 His Majesty King George V granted the title “Royal” to the Newfoundland Regiment. No other regiment in the British Empire was awarded this signal honours. Today the site of the battle is known as Newfoundland Memorial Park. / / ..................................... / Click here to add me to your watch list. / .....................................
I spent a couple of weekends last year taking photos of these spectacular little carnivorous flowers, drosera peltata . This shot in particular looks makes them look strikingly like War of the Worlds aliens. I don’t usually do series of photographs, but I might upload a few more of these.
So it’s not really that I have so much extra time to do things like this… but who could resist staging a fight between their stapler and staple remover by the sink and turning it into a photoshoot? /

I view a scene reminescent of a war torn village, the silhoeuttes of dazed soldiers and the bodies of victims strewn over several acres. This bark abstract is a great canvas to project your perceptions and stories about this scene. The imagery and characters can lead you to write the story captured by this photograph. Please view this in the larger format to view the imagery.

Well this one started out as a drawing of a tornado, then I started to see mechnical bits and pieces in it and then….oh well you know how it goes :) Storm Cruiser The remnants of the Bubble Clan watched awestruck near the base of, Last Stand Hill, as the Monolithic Storm Cruiser, inched its deadly way across the plane. They were not its target, for now, but they would not be able to stay here for long. The mountain ledge photon cannon, was automatically readying itself. Its threat detectors had been activated days ago when the battle tank had first appeared on their horizon. It seemed to offer little hope against the approaching monster, but it may buy them a little time. They had not expected the war. The Bubblers were a peaceful, intelligent and cooperative artistic community. They created living artworks which reflected an inner contact with the pulse of life itself. Initially they supplied the subtle sense needs of the other communities on this planet, their home, Klezz. Then as demand for their amazing works grew, news of this spread across the galaxy and soon they were trading across the divide, linking happily to other worlds, through CWT (Cosmic Wormhole Travel ) Now, paralysed with fear, Bubblers could only speculate about what had gone wrong. The CWT was supposed to filter out sentient beings of a dark and negative nature, but somehow the Kalmardans had arrived and from the safety of their giant, dark, disk-headed tyrannosaur like tanks, they crunched their way coldly and efficiently across the surface of Klezz. The cruisers had been designed with horrifying ingenuity. They created and harnessed electrical storms. The static required to fire their deadly lightning-blaster cannons was created by counter rotating successive layers of metallic disks at high speed. The air trapped in between the disks was ionised in a fraction of a second and the energy directed in concert to the unfortunates, in the designated target area. The sound alone was enough to terrify populations into submission. Should that fail, as it had in Bubble City, then the high energy bolts would cut through the toughest Bubble Domes, searching out weak points at the entrances. Kal, wiped a tear from his face and called to the others. It was time to move.

The naked earth is warm with Spring, / And with green grass and bursting trees / Leans to the sun’s gaze glorying, / And quivers in the sunny breeze; And life is colour and warmth and light, / And a striving evermore for these; / And he is dead who will not fight; / And who dies fighting has increase. The fighting man shall from the sun / Take warmth, and life from the glowing earth; / Speed with the light-foot winds to run, / And with the trees to newer birth; / And find, when fighting shall be done, / Great rest, and fullness after dearth. Poem written Julian Grenfell, Into Battle, April, 1915 Julian Grenfell, the son of Lord Desborough, was born in 1888. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, he joined the Royal Dragoons in 1910. During the next four years Grenfell served as a cavalry officer in India and South Africa. Grenfell was badly wounded when he was hit by shrapnel during action near Ypres. Julian Grenfell was taken to a hospital in Boulogne but died on 26th May 1915. / A few days later his poem, Into Battle, was published in The Times. It later became one of the most popular poems of the First World War. In memory of them all.
